Nagging thought coming out of the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and it isn't much of a spoiler. We learn in this episode that the Avengers do not receive a paycheck for what they do. They even joke about the idea of Tony Stark cutting them a check (like in the classic comics). Here's where I struggle with this idea -- The Avengers were created by SHIELD. Nick Fury personally recruited each member. Nick Fury gets a paycheck. Everyone who works for Nick Fury gets a paycheck. Why are the Avengers exempted from this? Sam wasn't recruited by Nick for the Avengers. He helped out Steve and Natasha in Winter Soldier when they were on the run from Hydra and became part of their little cadre. S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed after that and Fury went into hiding, and then Stark continued the Avengers from the compound on his dime, not Nick's.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the first episode. It was all setup for the entire series. Hopefully once Sam and Bucky team up it will get better.

While I've seen nearly every Marvel film, I'll admit that my brain shut off for prolonged amounts of time during many of them. I forget so much of it.

Winter Soldier is one of my top 3 Marvel films, and I've watched it more times than I can count.

Just wish Cap had a proper 3rd movie like all the others instead of having to shoe horn in the Avengers for no real reason

They probably were paid while Nick Fury was head of SHIELD. In that era, they were technically a government agency so I'm assuming they were paid just like any other employee.
After The Winter Soldier, it appeared that the Avengers were a wholly private enterprise funded by Tony Stark. I imagine that he paid for HQ and operating expenses related to their missions, but they had to seek outside funding for their personal expenses -- which, if you assume most basic living costs are covered by living at HQ and all the Avengers are unmarried without kids, are probably much less than average.
I assume this was still the arrangement after Stark died. I could see him setting aside a charitable trust in his will that generates income to cover Avengers operating expenses, while team members receive a stipend via donations or some kind of foundation. I doubt a group of celebrity superheroes would have a hard time attracting donors. Besides, doesn't he mention that he has "government contracts" that indicate he has a source of income? I had assumed that's what the opening mission was, since it seemed he was operating within the military chain of command.
Personally, I'm more mystified by 1) how Wakanda is such a wealthy nation when they are supposedly completely isolated (meaning no trade) from the rest of the world, and 2) how Coulson's agents continued to operate on the Agents of SHIELD TV show when they were pretty much a rogue group for just about the entire run of the show without any apparent source of outside funding.

Sources of nearly limitless funds for crime fighting gear is pretty standard superhero fare. I mean, what does Stark Enterprises actually DO? We only hear about when he's NOT selling stuff, what does he actually sell? How about the FF? Sure 'Reed makes money on patents' but which? and how? is there a corporate floor in the Baxter building?
Just one of those things one has to accept a certain amount of hand waving for, unless it's part of a particular story.

Just watched the second episode and liked it better than the first. Really neat that they brought Isaiah into the MCEU. I think that the actor was the Martian Manhunter father in Supergirl and the voice of Jonn Jonzz in JLU. The action scenes were great and the interaction between Sam and Bucky was great. John Walker was also interesting.

It took me awhile to figure out how to do spoilers on my cell phone. Please fix my quote so no one else reads it.

Please fix my quote so no one else reads it. No prob! I find it's easier to select "BBCode" at the bottom of the reply window than "Preview" mode and then just add (spoiler) in front of what you are saying, and (/spoiler) behind it. Just replace the parentheses with brackets.

Thought the second episode was really good.
Bit weird to see Walker painted as somewhat noble and not a recklessly dangerous asshole like he is in the comics, but maybe the show will show that in later episodes. Also nice to see more of Cap's lore getting some love with Isaiah

Definitely thought the interactions between the characters were really fun, but not sure about the plot yet...we'll see how it goes.
