Anyone looking for a comic book companion read for November noir should check out The Fade Out (issues 1-3 out) from Image by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. A noir story set in 1940s Hollywood, replete with scandals, black lists, murder, and mayhem....pretty much just good ole noir...

Apparently the "available on Netflix" list I posted a few days ago is out of date. As Naked City is not available. I took its "available instead" recommendations and found Anatomy of a Murder a film I'd always meant to see. It had murder, and something of a femme fatale, but was really more of a legal thriller than noir. So I think I missed the noir I was aiming for, but good a good trial film out of it. I do have a soft spot for lawyer films, and James Stewart and George C Scott faced off against each other well.

Just tried to watch The Big Sleep. Probably made it worse by watching Metropolis last night, as this is Fritz Lang on a much smaller, more generic, more Hollwood scale.
I just couldn't watch this thing after only ten minutes in. The acting was terrible, the character unlikable, and the directing and cinematography utterly "blah".

I think it's the only Otto Preminger movie I've watched though. Jimmy Stewart and George C Scott are always good.

It starts slow but I think it gets much better as it goes. I love the scene in the book shop, it's Bogart as you've never seen before and its hilarious.

Maybe I'll give it another try at a later time. I think I set my hopes too high on Lang, and I had a crummy morning to boot.

I don't think Lang had anything to do with the Big Sleep, or was it simply that you watched Metropolis first and felt that film was much better than the Big sleep?

I watched The Big Heat, not The Big Sleep. Sorry.

While I have managed to watch it all the way through I have to say that it really isn't one of my favorite films as I just hate how repugnant it all is. It's violence is certainly tame by modern standards but at the same time I dislike the use of violence seemingly just for violence sake no matter how its filmed.
