I had a few new experiences today, Dr. Calgari, Freaks, El Orfanato and what has become a new favorite Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary. It's a film adaptation of a ballet of Dracula. I know, that sounds weird but the way it was staged and the black and white filming really gives it that old school feel and the asian guy playing Dracula was amazing. Finally watched it last night. I didn't love Dracula himself, but the rest was truly phenomenal. I need to own this. Never would have heard of this without you, thwhtguardian. Thanks so much!

So what's the theme for November? Looks like it's up to thwhtguardian to decide! He took the lead this month with 21 horror films watched.

If we don't hear from thwhtguardian by tomorrow evening, the choice for next month's theme will go to our second most prolific movie viewer this month: Jesse412.

I think you should PM the winner each month so they are aware that it's thier turn to choose the theme.

In the future, I'm kind of hoping this club will ultimately take care of itself, but for this first outing, reminders might be in order.

I was out of town the last couple of days but if it's not too late my choice would have been noir, both classic and new. I've been a huge fan ever since I first saw Casablanca (which is coincidentally my favorite film of all time) as a kid and I'm constantly looking for new films in that style to see. As a genre, it's perhaps not as broad as last month's horror theme but there are a lot out there.

Love film noir and The Third Man is one of my all time favorite films. Coincidentally TCM is showing it later in the week.

I don't have a post up at the top and didn't watch any horror in October, but I might be up for some noir this month....there are several classic noir film collections on dvd at our local library that I have had on my list fo things to check out for quite some time now...

So help me out on this one. What constitutes "Noir"? I've seen many of the films on Jesse412's list, but I wouldn't know how to describe what they have in common beyond the time period and the crime/suspense component. Glad to have you back, thwhtguardian, and I'm looking forward to starting my November viewing!

To paraphrase former Justice Potter, I can't describe it but I know it when I see it. I think it's more a stylistic thing than actual substance, though.
Or as I tell my dad, noir means dames (not women or ladies, DAMES) in hats.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is whether Noir refers more to the substance of the film, the tone, or the imagery. Or is it all three?
For example, North by Northwest has the substance and tone of any classic noir film, but it's in technicolor and, thus, lacks that rich black and white imagery. Is it Noir?
Conversely, Sin City's substance and tone don't really line up with classic Noir in my opinion, but the imagery certainly does.

I haven't seen North by Northwest, but I don't think it's considered noir. I don't think it being in Technicolor is the reason, though. I tend to think of spy films as a different animal entirely.
