Do people that weren't even alive in March 1962 get to play? If so .... Amazing Adult Fantasy #13 (.12) Confidential Diary #12 (.12) Incredible Hulk #1 (.12) Nurse Betsy Crane #16 (.12) Strange Tales #97 (.12) Tales to Astonish #23 (.12) I certainty don't think these comics would be what hypothetical young me would have bought. Absolutely! I wasn't alive until 1969. It really wasn't my intention for people to choose based on what they would have chosen back on that date (March 1962 in this case) though of course it's fine if people do that. Obviously, you and I can't do that, and I'm basing my choices on what I think looks fun to read now, as an adult. There's no wrong answer, of course.

No time for the games girls play lol

Well, I was alive in March 1962. I was in first grade, learning to read. If I'd seen this array of comics then, my attention would have gone to the ones based on some of my then-favorite TV shows - Bozo, Diver Dan, Yogi Bear and Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes. When I did see my first comics, 18 months after this, I went for the superheroes, but I'm not sure which of these would have caught my eye. Maybe Adventure; my first few comics tended to have sky backgrounds.
Speaking as the me of today, if I had unlimited funds I'd get Drift Marlo for my co-worker whose last name is Marlo. But for me, I was such a Marvel zombie in the 60s that I'm mesmerized by the proto-Marvel Age era. Only something really unique among the other comics is going to get my 12 cents for the next few years.
And one of those oddballs is present this month. Three months back I picked up Charlton's Space Adventures #44 for the first appearance of Mercury Man. This month I have to get Space Adventures #45 for his second and last appearance.
This presents a dilemma. I have enough money to buy six comics, and there are six Marvels that I want. Which one to forgo? I have to get Hulk #1 and AAF #13, so let's look at JIM, ST, TOS and TTA and see which ones stand out. Strange Tales #97 has a Kirby/Ditko cover and a story by Gene Colan along with the usual two Kirby/Ayers stories and one by Ditko, so that's in. Among the other three, the only one with anything even a little bit unique is Tales to Astonish #32, which has one Kirby story inked by Paul Reinman instead of Dick Ayers. That makes five. The other two are absolutely bog-standard 1962 Marvels: cover and two stories by Kirby & Ayers, and one each by Ditko and Heck. How to choose? I like both covers. Well, finding 29 back issues of Tales of Suspense seems easier than finding 79 back issues of Journey into Mystery, so I'll take that one.
the final list:
Amazing Adult Fantasy #13 Incredible Hulk #1 Space Adventures #45 Strange Tales #97 Tales of Suspense #30 Tales to Astonish #32
All $.12.

- Amazing Adult Fantasy #13
- Incredible Hulk #1 (mainly for its value as a collector's item than its story; yes, there's a dirty speculator inside me)
- Sea Devils #5

WOW! A whole buck!! And yet I still want so much more than a full dollar will get me. I'll have to get those grades even higher...
Last month, I went without any Batman because none of his covers looked good, but this month both Batman #148 (.12) and Detective Comics #304 (.12) look like sure-fire must reads. What the hell is Brain Boy? I need to try out Brain Boy #2 (.15) I've held off on picking up Fantastic Four until now, but this cover showcases their powers nicely and makes me curious to read more. I'm sure that Dr. Doom guy is just some throw-away villain of the month, though (.12). Gorgo is another one I've been holding off on getting, but that's an awesome cover (.12) Green Lantern teaming up with The Flash? Gotta have Green Lantern #13 (.12) I don't think I've bought any Justice League yet, but that cover really excites me (.12) I already knew Life with Archie was the best of the Archie titles, but that is one fine cover that just begs you to read the interior (.12)
99 cents total. Let's hope sales tax is low.

OK got to go with...
Brave & the Bold 42 (12 cents) Fantastic Four 5 (12 cents)
and then maybe see if I can afford a new Hardy Boys book with the rest.
though if I knew what the 87th Precinct was (at that time) then I might have snagged the comic version.

More money and no Mad...what too do this month?
Brave & Bold #42 - I'm not a big fan of Silver Age DC superheroes, but you can't beat that Joe Kubert cover.
Fantastic Four #5 - This title has been hit and miss. But more hit than miss.
Flash #129 - No way I can pass up the GA Flash.
G.I. Combat #94 - Those Heath/Adler wash covers are things of beauty.
48 cents, which means I have enough left for an SF digest or possibly a paperback. Or maybe a couple of used ones.

It was a gritty police procedural that (in the novels, anyway) depicted police work more realistically than usual for the mass media of the period. The show, which lasted only one season (1961-62) starred Robert Lansing and Gena Rowlands.

Oh I know what it is now, I have just started reading my way through the McBain novels after several folks in the book thread mentioned them, but as my mythical 8 year old self (the conceit I use in doing this game since that was the prime age I was buying comics off a spinner rack with an allowance) I would have had no idea even though I loved detective fiction like the Hardy Boys and shows like Barnaby Jones, Hawaii 5-0, Cannon and Rockford Files as a kid. I was just saying if I had had a clue what it was when I was the age to be buying comics off the rack, I would have picked it up, but as it is, I didn't discover the McBain books until I was in my 50s so I wouldn't have grabbed that comic as an 8 year old. Rereading my post, I was unclear about that (so I have now edited for clarity).
