I’ve been thinking of doing a month without any Marvel or DC, but not this month, not with the first Loki, the first Star Sapphire and that Lois cover! Green Lantern #16 Journey Into Mystery #16 Kid Colt #107 Linda Carter, Student Nurse #8 Little Dot #83 Little Dot Dotland #3 Little Dot’s Uncles and Aunts #3 Lois Lane #36 Patsy Walker #103 Strange Suspense Stories #61 THE LITTLE DOT RENAISSANCE IS UPON US!! It would be nice to investigate some of the cool stuff these other companies have, but it's really tough to go cold turkey from Marvel and DC!

Playing catch up July '62.
Boris Karloff Thriller #1
Fantastic Four #7 (and after I read it I may well have given up on the book because that story is a stinker)
Fractured Fairy Tales #1
Incredible Hulk #3 (the first issue was great. The second marginal. This one probably kills the book for me).
Mummy #1 (I'm betting the interior does not live up to that cover and I'm going to be mad about spending the money)
Popeye the Sailor #66 (I'm not sure I can pass up that cover).

August '62
Brave and the Bold #44 (Kubert cover probably does its job)
Bullwinkle #1 (probably can't pass up Bullwiggle)
Fantastic Four #8 (that cover is weird enough to draw me back in after the disaster of #7)
Our Fighting Forces #71 (faboo Grandietti cover gets the job done)
Twilight Zone #1 (I'd have to give it a try)
That may well be it. Depending on what was out in SF digests and in paperbacks there's a modest chance I'd buy
Phantom #1

This looks like a good month to step out of the Marvel/DC mindset and buy other publishers. Except for Batman #151! “Batman’s New Secret Identity!” is such a great story.
Batman #151 Battlefield Action #44 Hot Stuff #51 Kid Montana #37 King Leonardo #2 Love Diary #44 Nurse Betsy Crane #19 Submarine Attack #36 Teen Confessions # 20 Unusual Tales #36

Ooh, tough choices this time around!
Fantastic Four #9 ($.12) Flash #152($.12) Incredible Hulk #4 ($.12) Journey into Mystery #86 ($.12) Justice League of America #15 ($.12) Rocky and His Fiendish Friends #2 ($.25) Space Family Robinson #1 ($.12) Strange Tales #103 ($.12) Tales to Astonish #38 ($.12)
Technically, that puts me a penny over but I have change left over from an earlier month and I *really* want that Rocky comic so...
Cei-U! I summon Honest Abe!

Let's see what we've got
Fantastic Four #9 (#8 was enough to make up for the disaster of #7)
Rocky & His Fiendish Friends #2 (I'm a fiend for Rocky & Bullwiggle)
That's probably it. Big chunk of change to go to mags and paperbacks.

Here we go...
Action Comics #293 Archie Giant Series Magazine #19 (World of Jughead) Detective Comics #308 Dracula (#1) Pep #158 Superman #156 Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #64 Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #7 Tales from the Tomb #1
Total: $1.21 If dad's going to be a hardass, I'll leave Jimmy Olsen on the stands.
A few notes: Because of the way dates fall, Pep 158 and 159 both appear this month. And Charlton manages to put out Black Fury #15 and Black Fury #38, two different series.
On Dell's Drift Marlo--I know it was a newspaper strip, but I think in one of Raymond Chandler's novels, some hood dismisses Phillip Marlowe, saying "Drift, Marlowe..." Intentional reference?

August 1962 My aunt bought me my first DC comic this month: Star Spangled War Stories 105. I distinctly remember reading it to my other aunt and my grandmother at breakfast that morning. They were dutifully impressed (at least it seemed that way to me) that an eight-year-old kid could read and pronounce "stegasaurus," but I'd been a dinosaur nut for quite a while by then. But now Princeling Hal gets to spend the remaining $1.08! Here goes! Brave and the Bold #44 Who is this cool-looking Hawkman guy? G.I. Combat #96 Reminds me of one of my favorite war movies" "Attack," which featured a GI (Jack Palance) going one-on-one with a tank! My Greatest Adventure #72 GIs and dinosaurs are way cool, but GIs and Roman legionnaires?! Veni, vivi, vici! Our Fighting Forces #71 Lovin' that cover. Looks like one of my other favorite war movies, "Guadalcanal Diary." I'm grabbing that. Superman #156 Superman's dying? I'll never see this again, so I'd better buy it. Four more? Wow! Phantom 1. Hey, I've been reading the Phantom comic strip every day for a long time, but, man, he never looks this tough in the paper! And the back cover is the front cover minus all the writing! Yes! And why not grab Combat 6?! It looks like one of my Mars Attacks cards. Have to have it. Tales from the Tomb #1 That looks pretty scary, like one of the old nuns at my school. But it can't be that scary. Last one will be Tales to Astonish #37. I like the idea of a little guy who's a hero, since I'm a little guy myself. Plus, the bad guy looks like Frankenstein as a running back.
