Batman #155 (Batman vs giant dragons, yes please. And yes, I know its not an actual dragon, but still, cool cover) Bugs Bunny #89 (Bugs Bunny in a weird sci-fi type story? That's something different) Doctor Solar #4 (another great painted cover) Sgt. Fury #1 (Looks like those Charlton war comics I've been picking up, though this one looks even better) Space War #22 (Speaking of Charlton, this looks like it might be worth investigating) Strange Tales #109 (again, ST has a better cover than FF for another month) Tales of Suspense #42 (Awesome cover) Worlds Finest #133 (Might as well get another Batman-related comic) And to finish it off I'll get Jetsons #3 and Daffy Duck #33.

March 1963 Adventure #308: I can't resist the banner at the top proclaiming "The Strange Return of Lightning Lad!" DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #15: The so-called "Awesome Android" looks malformed and icky, but I've grown fond of the FF team. Marvel, 12 cents Justice League of America #19: a regular buy at this point. Lots of colorful costumes (unlike the FF). DC, 12 cents Sea Devils #11: another gorgeous wash cover! Love this series for the covers. DC, 12 cents Sue and Sally Smith Flying Nurses #51: I'm loving this series. A mansel-in-distress cover? Yep, got to have this one. Charlton, 12 cents Tales to Astonish #44: Debut of a new character called the Wasp. Love how she's saving Ant-Man's butt. Marvel, 12 cents Lois Lane #41: Back in the day this was my oldest LL comic! I was so proud to own it; I got it as a back issue (for 35 cents) at the collectibles store on my block and I remember on that same summer day my dad took us kids to the Cloisters (we lived nearby so he often took us there; we spent many beautiful and fun afternoons there). So I always associate this LL comic with the Cloisters (and vice-versa). The cover story's interior art was by Swan/Klein and I remember thinking how old-fashioned and "quiet" the Swan-Klein art seemed compared to the effervescent Kurt Schaffenberger cover. Later on I realized that many--though not all--of the Lois and Lana faces in the story were redone by Schaffenberger. Anyway, this comic brings back great memories. DC, 12 cents Wendy Witch World #5: as I have mentioned I loved these Harvey Giants, especially Wendy Witch World. A nostalgic pick. Harvey, 25 cents. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Total spent so far: $1.09....11 cents left I'm going to take up Prince Hal 's very generous offer of a penny so I can buy another 12-cent comic--namely this one: Woody Woodpecker #76, 'cause I loved those Woody TV cartoons. Gold Key, 12 cents All in all, another great month! My favorite Lois issue!

Doctor Solar #4 -- Love those painted Gold Key covers, and this one is sure intriguing. Life with Archie #20 -- The title seldom disappoints with its better-considered, full-length stories. Showcase #44 -- "Tommy Tomorrow of the Planeteers" might be a fun time? Space Family Robinson #3 -- Painted Gold Key covers get me almost every time. Space War -- Cool title, cool cover. I'm in. Tales to Astonish -- Costumed sci-fi heroes! Tales of Suspense #42 -- While this "Iron Man" guy doesn't seem impressive, that cover sure does. Turok Son of Stone -- Painted...Gold Key...cover. Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #272 -- Barks and Fallberg. At least one of them is always bound to turn in something good each month. Wonder Woman #138 -- Never cared for WW, but I love the Wonder Woman Family.

Marvel covers are getting intriguing, while Batman seems silly.
Action Comics #300 Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #4 Fantastic Four #15 Flash #136 Justice League of America #19 Strange Adventures #152 Strange Tales #109 Superman #161 Thirteen #7 World's Finest Comics #133
Truth be told, though, today, I'm most curious about Dear Nancy Parker and Nurse Linda Lark.

Showcase #44 -- "Tommy Tomorrow of the Planeteers" might be a fun time? It sure is, at least if (like me) you love Lee Elias' art. This Showcase run, incidentally, was editor Julius Schwartz's attempt to do for Tommy T what he did for Flash, GL, Hawkman, etc. Alas, it didn't take.
Cei-U! I summon the soft reboot!

March, 1963The only two comic books my mother ever (knowingly) purchased for me were these two beauties from March 1963.I wrote about the importance of the second-billed story in Superman, "The last Days of Ma and Pa Kent" in my "Memories of a Comics Lover" thread lo, these many moons ago. Of course, I would have bought these given another shot at the newsstand. As for the remaing 96 cents, let's see... Action 300, of course. Looks pretty scary. Justice League of America 19 absolutely. I later saw this very comic at one of my good cousin's house and was fascinated by that cover. My Greatest Adventure 79 with a donosaur eating a rocketship? Sign me up! Tomahawk 86 is a slam-dunk, though it would have had to be described as a simple "dunk" in 1963. Sgt. Fury 1, had I actually seen it then, along with the 130th issue of my old favorite, Our Army at War, would definitely have found its way into my combat-happy hands! I might regret skipping issues of Batman and Detective, but I was a sucker for a certain archer, so I'd probably have grabbed the Dell Robin Hood. And to round things out, because Farrar has already paid me back my one-cent loan, I'll try Rawhide Kid 34, because Apaches!

April 1963 Batman 156 leads off, not only because it was one of my first "bought it myself" purchases, but also because even then you knew it was destined to be a classic. I mean, Robin is dead? What... didn't the readers like him enough? Adventure 309 is irresistible: all that Kryptonian stuff on the cover PLUS the Legion of Super-Monsters, featuring The Driller!? Helluva bargain for 12 cents. I should be paying Mort Weisinger! Justice League of America 20 means a ton of superheroes. I'm sticking with this one. World's Finest 134 is a comic I desperately tried to buy -- because it had "a new Green Arrow story!" -- by slipping the lady at the candy store a dime and hoping she'd let me slide for the extra two cents. She didn't, so I have to have it. That Amazing Spider-Man #3 has a really cool cover, so I'm going to cross into this new Marvel territory again. Five more. Some difficult choices await... I'll take Fantastic Four #16 not just for the cover, but also for this guy Ant-Man and the bad guy with the wicked (as we used to say) name... DR. DOOM! Speaking of little guys, I think I'll give Atom #7 a shot. Two neat heroes I really don't know much about, especially Hawkman. And, whoa! GI Combat 100 has a cover that is so good! My war comic for the month. Only two more, and I'm torn, because there are a lot of new and appealing covers there, but I'm going to buy Challengers of the Unknown #32. Volcano monsters are tough (another word for "cool" in 1963)! One more, so I'll go into unexplored territory and try Flash #137, which not only has a nice cover, but also has this other Flash fighting the one I've seen in my JLA comics.
