2 DC Annuals this month? I thought they released those during the summer. Anyway here's how little me spent his paltry allowance a month before discovering Marvel comics. C'mon, $1.25 for an entire month is below the poverty line. Can i sign up for government comic assistance?
Action 308 Adventure 316 Detective 323 Green Lantern 26 Superboy 110 Superman 166 Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane 46 Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen 74 Superman Annual 8
4 pennies left over but can't afford the Batman Annual. But I do have a grandfather that visits often who slips me some money and says don't tell your parents

I think they were usually Batman and Superman titles.

The Superman and Batman "Annuals" were actually published twice a year from 1961-64, then were replaced by the 80-Page Giants.

Prince Hal, that Lois Lane cover is insane! In a good way. But then, I'd expect no less from Lois Lane.

Fantastic Four #23
Journey Into Mystery #100
Mad #84
Outer Limits #1
Plenty of money left for SF.

Even though I was DC-centric, I think one of those Marvels would've been tempting, either Avengers or (my pick) FF:
Action Comics #308 Archie's Pal Jughead #104 Batman Annual #6 Fantastic Four #23 Ghost Stories #5 Green Lantern #26 Superman Annual #8 Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #74
Today, I'd get that issue of Ponytail if I saw it cheap. Great cartooning in those books.

November 1963: here's how I'll spend my $1.25 Adventure #316 Another impressive Swan cover that showcases a lot of characters. Love it! And if the cover looks familiar, later on this image of the seated Legionnaires was used as the masthead illustration in the letter column. DC, 12 cents Aquaman #13 Mera! DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #23 Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Love Stories #100 What gorgeous cover from Jay Scott Pike! In particular, I love the heavier outlining of the characters and the guy's face structure/expression. DC, 12 cents Green Lantern #26 Star Sapphire! Poor Hal looks so discombobulated. DC, 12 cents Superman #166 a great "imaginary novel." DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #46 aaanndd another great "imaginary novel." Interesting that in these two comics, which are deliberately aimed at a very young audience, Weisinger features stories that depict problems with children and childrearing. Not the only time he did so, of course, but with the one-two punch here it's thrown into high relief, for me anyway. DC, 12 cents. Jimmy Olsen #74 DC, 12 cents Tales to Astonish # 52 I'll keep buying this as long as the Wasp is featured. Marvel, 12 cents. X-Men #3 Marvel, 12 cents. A nickel left over...time for some licorice laces.

Make Mine Marvel! Only 3 DC issues this month, and only the Legion run in Adventure is a steady DC monthly title for me at this point.
Adventure #316 (Legion of course) ASM #9 (1st appearance of my favorite Spidey villain of all time) Aquaman #13 (Mera and Nick Cardy art, works for me) Avengers #3 FF #23 GL #26 (Star Sapphire, another favorite) Journey Into Mystery #100 Strange Tales #117 (Ditko Dr. Strange) Tales of Suspense #50 X-Men #3 (go Blob!)

Another all Lee/Schwartz month:
Amazing Spider-Man #10 ($.12) Atom #11 ($.12) Fantastic Four #24 ($.12) Flash #147 ($.12) Journey into Mystery #101 ($.12) Justice League of America #25 ($.12) Mystery in Space #89 ($.12) Strange Tales #118 ($.12) Tales of Suspense #51 ($.12) Tales to Astonish #53 ($.12)
...and no, $1.25 is not enough. I'd double it.

All-DC month for me. Action Comics #309 (Cool looking cover!) Adventure Comics #317 (Legion of Super-Heroes!!) Challengers of the Unknown #36 Atom #11 Batman #161 (Delightfully zany cover) Justice League of America #25 Flash #142 Superman #167 (A classic!) Metal Men #6 Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #47 (another zany, fun looking cover) A very rare Marvel-free month. No Avengers or X-Men. Plus these weak offerings from comics I would usually buy: Amazing Spider-Man #10 (The Enforcers, meh) Fantastic Four #24 ("The Infant Terrible!" Lame)

Adventure #317 - Legion/Dream Girl, but I learned something I never knew reading the issue notes just now! The Time Trapper, who briefly appears here, actually appeared previously in Wonder Woman #101 as the Time Master. Now I'm curious about that issue!
ASM #10 - Love the Enforcers, you just don't get villains like that anymore. Where's Fancy Dan these days?
FF #24 - FF is a monthly regular for me, but always really liked the cover art on this one.
Journey into Mystery #101 - I'm always up for a Zarrko appearance.
McLintock #1 - That movie cracks me up every time, super fun and an often rewatched John Wayne movie for me. I'm sure the actual interior of the comic itself may be just so-so, but I'd still buy it.
Metal Men #6 - My favorite pick of the month! The Metal Men were zany enough to begin with, but the Gas Gang is next level. Probably one of my favorite Metal Men stories of all time.
Space Family Robinson #6 - Because I'm a sucker for the cover art.
Strange Tales #118 - Ditko Era Dr. Strange, but we also get the whole FF in the lead story with the Wizard to boot!
Superman #167 - Ultimate Silver Age bad guy team-up with Brainiac and Luthor.
Lois Lane #47 - Love the Super Lois type stories, such a cool outfit and cover.
I chose these without adding up as I went along, and it worked out to $1.20, so at least for this month my allowance was right on the money!

The Time Trapper, who briefly appears here, actually appeared previously in Wonder Woman #101 as the Time Master. Now I'm curious about that issue! I'll spare you the agony. The idea that Time Trapper and Time Master are the same character is a retcon first introduced twenty years later in Super Friends #17. There is zero evidence in the original story to support the idea and the two characters are quite different personality-wise. Also, the Wonder Woman story sucks (as does pretty much every WW story from that era).
Cei-U! I summon the spirit of the spectacularly anal-retentive E. Nelson Bridwell!

Oh, I hate that type of attempted "retro-fitting" continuities from much later events, thank you for letting me know that! Though as you mention Super Friends #17, I always remember that story sticking out to me as referencing (well, at least attemping to) regular continuity events. It kind of impressed me that the title was meant to be a junior readers title, but probably was more enjoyable for me at times than the actual JLA series (the Ramona Fradon art didn't hurt either!)
