At this point, Batman was published eight times a year. Along with Superman, Superboy, Flash, Green Lantern, Justice League and a few others. Hard to believe that Superman was only published 8 times a year. That was a best seller! DC’s big anthology titles were monthly. Action. Adventure. Detective. Blackhawk was monthly. Our Army at War was monthly. Strange Adventures was monthly. But most of the popular titles devoted to one character were 8 times a year. A few were bi-monthly. I can only guess at the reasons for this.

I'll hazard a guess that it was those anthology titles that were the original titles of the DC line and that the belief might have been that the more strips per title, the better off for sales. If a kid didn't care for Superman, he might still buy Action for one or more of the other strips. Also easier to switch the lead feature quickly. Just a guess or two.

As for February 1964: I'm almost positive I bought Superman 168; I loved Superman's "alternate universe" before there was one. If I could have, I know I would have purchased Adventure Comics #319 (Legion!); Brave and the Bold #53 (Two heroes that aren't Batman or Superman!); Challengers 37 If adventure has a name, it's the Challengers!); G.I. Combat #105 and Our Army at War #141; (Those great covers and stories!); Hawkman #1(Love the costume design!); Star-Spangled War 114 (Dinosaurs and ski troops... YES!); Strange Adventures #163 (Cool cover... like an sf movie I'd've watched on Channel 9); Phantom #7 (A newspaper favorite); Tarzan of the Apes #141 (The water buffalo alone would have got me! Hi yo, Gorgo!); Combat #12 (More army men!); Ghost Stories #6 (Looks scary, and I liked ghost stories back then); Daredevil #1 (We would have lovingly called that a "tough" costume!); Fantastic Four #26 (Tons of unfamiliar heroes... bring it on!) And twenty cents in next month's bank!

With two dollars in hand, I'll buy these in March 1964:
Adventure #320. Really boring cover, but by this time I'm invested in the Legion so if course I'll buy this. DC, 12 cents Betty and Veronica #101. Archie, 12 cents Doom Patrol #87. DC, 12 cents Falling in Love #67. DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #27. Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Love Stories #103. DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #49. DC, 12 cents Mystery in Space #91. DC, 12 cents Woody Woodpecker #80. A nostalgic favorite. Gold Key, 12 cents X-Men #5. I really like this cover (yes, despite the "creative" coloring)--Wanda and the Brotherhood look like they're the series stars. Marvel, 12 cents. Young Love #43. Love this cover's color scheme. DC, 12 cents. Total: only $1.32--plenty left over for some candy, plus an egg cream or three

March 1964, I bought this beauty off the stands. Couldn't wait to see it after seeing all the ads for it... And of course I'd seen PT 109 in the movies the previous summer. There was a real run on the PT boats in those years. McHale's Navy had already been on since the fall pf '62. And there were PT boats in all the toy sections, too. What would I have bought if I could have? Espionage 1 Scary-cool cover. Adventure 320 Love that Legion! All-American Men of War #103 Another great cover! Blackhawk #196 The Black Knights in a sorta/kinda war story. Detective Comics #327 Weird. This issue looks a little different. I'll give it a try. Doom Patrol #87 The name alone grabs me. And I love the guy in the bandages! Justice League of America #27 All those heroes! Our Army at War #142 Need my war comics fix. Rip Hunter... Time Master #20 Time travel? Check? World War Two? Check And you know Rip will eventually get Hitler. Check. Showcase #50 The cover's more than enough to get my dime and two pennies. Electrifying, and even better than it looked in all the ads. Tomahawk #92 Need you ask why? I'm banking 33 cents for next month after also buying this:

I missed Fall of the Roman Empire!
I guess I can read it at dbutler’s house on the way home from school. While The Three Stooges or The Little Rascals is on TV in the background.
