80 Page Giant #1 Superman as an old guy with a hillbilly beard always killed me. Hours of reading time with this one! Adventure Comics #323 Bought it then off the stands; have to buy it again. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 Well, I’ve got all this money, so let me see what all this Marvel fuss is about. Batman #165 and Detective Comics 330 There’s something cool about this New Look. Doom Patrol #89 Another of the bizarre, creepy villains that keep showing up here. Justice League of America #29 Who the heck are these guys? Superman #171 Another bearded Superman? Sure, why not? World's Finest Comics #143 Bought it then and will do it again. The main attraction was the GA story with the first part of his “team-up” with Aquaman. So cool! (I was ten, okay?) Whoa! Have to grab this, too: But that means I still have money left. (I actually have $2.05 because I found a nickel in my cut-off shorts I hadn't worn since last summer.) I'm going with Sgt. Fury #9 and Marvel Tales Annual #1. Neat covers, as we would have said back then.

80 Page Giant #1 (lots of reading material, and interesting looking stories) .25 Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (more oversized comics) .25 Now I have 1.50 so: Adventure Comics #323 (sounds like a good sci-fi story) .12 Amazing Spider-Man #16 (more spidey this month, plus Daredevil!) .12 Avengers #7 (looks like non-stop action) .12 Fantastic Four #30 (another new awesome looking villain) .12 Justice League of America #29 (another JLA/JSA crossover, gotta get this ) .12 Tales to Astonish #59 (more crossovers this month) .12 That leaves me with 72 cents, lets look at the non-Marvel/DC fare:
Archie Annual #16 .25 Archie Giant Series Magazine #30 .25 Herbie #3 (gotta see what this is all about) .12
And I'll use the dime to buy some more trading cards.

June 1964--wow, what a haul this month! 80 Page Giant #1 Superman DC, 25 cents 80 Page Giant #2 Jimmy Olsen DC, 25 cents Adventure #323 Legion DC, 25 cents Archie Giant Series Magazine #28 - Betty and Veronica/Summer Fun Archie, 25 cents Brave and the Bold #55 Metal Men and Atom DC, 12 cents Doom Patrol #89 DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #30 Marvel, 12 cents Justice League of America #29 Love Love Love the JSA. And that Sekowsky-Anderson cover? Be still, my heart Tales of Suspense #57 Yay, the Black Widow's back! Plus there's a newcomer named Hawkeye. Marvel, 12 cents Wonder Woman #148 DC, 12 cents World's Finest #143 I love heroes fighting one another; plus there's Jimmy as Flamebird. DC, 12 cents Young Romance #131 Bonnie Taylor serial, Romita cover. DC, 12 cents And for me, the pièce de résistance of the June 1964 offerings: Lois Lane #51 DC, 12 cents Not enough $$$ to buy Betty and Veronica #104 (the B&V Giant will help ease my pain) and Marvel Tales Annual #1, so these two go back on the racks 3 Giants = .75 10 non-Giants = 1.20 Total: 1.95 Kurt Schaffenberger rules--just imagine seeing this monumental cover on the stands. While many of the "imaginary novels" were tearjerkers, this one is so stuffed with sorrow and sadness that it's unforgettable, at least for me. My favorite Silver Age Imaginary Tale.

Adventure #323 - Legion story, also interesting to me because it's the first appearance of Spider Girl who briefly appears as a rejected Legion applicant, later reappearing in the Legion of Super-Villains. Her "hair power" actually preceded Medusa first appearing for Marvel.
ASM #16 - I like the yellow Daredevil era and his crossover with Spidey here. I've also always enjoyed the Ringmaster as a villain and his crazy hypnotic top hat (back when villains could still be a bit on the zany side).
ASM Annual #1 - First Sinister Six, 'nuff said.
Avengers #7 - Classic line-up, Kirby art, Enchantress and Zemo. Bliss.
Daredevil #3 - Back to my yellow Daredevil era comment...
FF #30 - In truth, Diablo was never a favorite for me, but it's still classic FF and a regular monthly title for me at this point.
Hawkman #3 - I always enjoy Hawkgirl appearances in particular and this has a great cover.
Journey Into Mystery #107 - Maybe even a little more for the Tales of Asgard feature this month with Balder.
JLA #29 - First Crime Syndicate, also 'nuff said.
Strange Tales #124 - I can never say no to Paste-Pot Pete. Ditko era Dr. Strange doesn't hurt either.
Tales of Suspense #57 - Hawkeye and Black Widow, on the wrong side of the law. And yet...I just know that deep inside, there's a Joe worth saving (sorry, wrong franchise).
$1.45, a little under, but I am content. Wonderful month.

Her "hair power" actually preceded Medusa first appearing for Marvel... Love Spider Girl! Mort and his writers seemed to pay attention to readers' new Legionnaire suggestions; in Adventure #310 a reader suggested a "Spider Lass" whose power was "converting her hair into a super web and casting it around opponents." There are plenty of other examples, but keep an eye out for next month's Adventure #324 when the Lallor heroes show up and we get Duplicate Boy, Gas Girl, Life Lass and Beast Boy--all reader suggestions from earlier letter columns.

Did not realize she was a reader suggestion! Ah, the Heroes of Lallor, another classic. I always really liked Duplicate Boy, the concept of his powers (I felt like even more could have been done creatively with him), the visual of his costume, and I'm old school, he's still Vi's classic sweetheart in my mind. And Gas Girl...you just have to love the name (why is Jumpin' Jack Flash suddenly playing in my head?)

I think all of the others have an interesting and unusual power. But duplicate Boy, well, I absolutely hate the superpower of being able to absorb or mimic others' superpowers. And also, Farrar, I didn't realize that these were reader suggestions. Cool!

I always had this wish to see Duplicate Boy face off against Nemesis Kid and they just keep cycling through various powers (without resorting to the Duo Damsel precedent of NK being vulnerable to that power).

... And also, Farrar , I didn't realize that these were reader suggestions. Cool! Yes, Weisinger was very big on polling young fans--kids (the target audience for his comics) about what they wanted to see in his comics, what worked, what didn't, etc. Back then in Adventure Comics Weisinger encouraged readers to suggest characters and said the best suggestions would appear in the letter columns and would be used in future stories. Besides the characters I mentioned earlier, some other reader suggestions included Polar Boy, Color Kid, Insect King (inspiration for Lana's Insect Queen identity), Blackout Boy (same power as the later characters Shadow Lass & Shadow Kid), and two who showed up in the Super Stalag of Space Legion story, Weight Wizard and Blockade Boy.

I remember buying this... and thinking that "Gas Girl" was not exactly the most flattering of super-heroic names. This, too. For reasons I can't remember now, I always liked Clayface. (I do seem to recall that he always struck me as having some sadness attached to his origin, though maybe I'm thinking of the Golden Age Basil Karlo version.) But I also wanted to read the second part of the GA-Aquaman "non-teamup," with GA fighting his enemies under the sea and Aquaman his on the surface. Now, if I'd had the treasure trove of funds you're supplying, dbutler69 , I think I would have picked up Airwar Stories #1 and Idaho #5 (Dell); Tarzan of the Apes #145 (Gold Key); (Charlton); Fantastic Four Annual #2, Sgt. Fury #10, and Rawhide Kid #42 (Marvel); and, from DC, Capt. Storm #3, Detective 331, Our Army at War 104, Doom Patrol #90, Tomahawk 94, and Justice League of America #30. Nineteen cents left for a soda, a pack of baseball cards and four pieces of Bazooka.

Had to forego a few Juliuys Schwartz titles in order to pick up a couple of 25-centers but there's no way I'm passing up the chance to buy that Beatles comic!
Amazing Spider-Man #17($.12) Avengers #8 ($.12) Beatles #1 ($.35)
Fantastic Four #31 ($.12) Fantastic Four Annual #2 ($.25) Green Lantern #31 ($.12)
Journey into Mystery #108 ($.12) Justice League of America #30 ($.12) Sgt. Fury #10 ($.12) Strange Tales #125 ($.12) Tales of Suspense #58 ($.12) Tales to Astonish #60 ($.12) X-Men #7 ($.12)
That leaves six cents to apply to next month's offerings.
Cei-U! I summon those lyrical lads from Liverpool!
EDIT: Didn't realize the Beatles was 35 cents, not a quarter, so I put Flaah back and havee eight cents left over.

That Dell Air War Stories cover is pretty sweet, even though I'm not much of a war comics guy.
