In August 1964, I'll spend my two bucks on these: 80 Page Giant #4-Flash I don't even like the Flash, but I can't resist the look of those 1960s DC Giant covers! DC, 25 cents Action #317 Can't resist this cover design with its multiple panels, even though it's not a Giant. DC, 12 cents Adventure #325 For the Legion of course. DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #32 I first read this sad story when it was reprinted in Marvel's Greatest Comics #24. A real tear-jerker. Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Romances #104 That's supposed to be Richard Chamberlain? Sorry, Mike Sekowsky and/or Tony Abruzzo, but that's a poor likeness. Oh well--I like Chamberlain, so I'll buy this anyway! DC, 12 cents Hawkman #4 Dizzying POV on the cover, plus a truly glorious Hawkman--thank you Murphy Anderson! DC, 12 cents Heart Throbs #92 DC, 12 cents Journey Into Mystery #109 My favorite character Wanda's on the cover (although she only appears in a few panels in the story itself ). Marvel, 12 cents Lois Lane #52 DC, 12 cents Metal Men #10 DC, 12 cents Naza #4 Love this gorgeous painted cover. And the faces remind me of stills I've seen of Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward in David and Bathsheba. Dell, 12 cents Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #289 Gold Key, 12 cents Wendy Witch World #11 Harvey, 25 cents Wonder Woman #149 DC, 12 cents 12 12-centers = $1.44 2 Giants = .50 Total: $1.94 ... guess with the leftover change I'll buy some some strawberry licorice whips.

Mystery in Space #95 Superman #173 Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #53 Adventure Comics #326 (Legion, duh!) Justice League of America #31 World's Finest Comics #145 Doom Patrol #91 Amazing Spider-Man #19 Avengers #10 (Immortus!) Fantastic Four #33 Journey into Mystery #110 Tales of Suspense #60 Tales to Astonish #62 X-Men #8 I see that I overlooked Jonny Quest #1, so I either have to go 4 cents over or ditch Tales to Astonish for this.

Yay, it's allowance time. In September 1964, I'll buy these: Adventure #326 The girl Legionnaires take charge! LOL, that Phantom Girl hand smashing the Star Boy figurine! I like this story better than the later one in Adv. #368. DC, 12 cents Aquaman #18 The wedding of Mera and Aquaman--take that Sue Storm and Reed Richards! Glorious cover. DC, 12 cents Doom Patrol #91 How did the CCA miss this cover and the, er, oddly-shaped head of the villain on the left? Whatever. DC, 12 cents Falling In Love #71 DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #33 Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Love Stories #107 Cool cover. DC, 12 cents Justice League of America #31 DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #53 DC, 12 cents Love Diary #35 The cover sequence makes me want to read the story. Charlton, 12 cents My Little Margie #54 meets the Beatles! Yeah, yeah, yeah...Charlton, 12 cents Mystery in Space #95 LOL, almost didn't recognize Adam without his helmet on. DC, 12 cents Pep #175 Ronnie's prominently featured on the cover and she's my favorite Archie character, so I'll buy this. Archie, 12 cents Rip Hunter...Time Master #23 DC, 12 cents Tales to Astonish #62 Back in the day this was one of the first back issues I ever owned; I remember I was so excited to find this and buy it (for 35 cents). Love this cover; it seems to be the first time in a long time that the Wasp was actually shown on a TtA cover (or an early Avengers cover for that matter), instead of just depicting her on the cover as a tiny flying easy-to-overlook speck. Marvel, 12 cents Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #82 One of my favorite TV childhood cartoons. Gold Key, 12 cents Young Love #46 Mary Robin serial DC, 12 cents Okay, so that's 16 comics @12 cents apiece = $1.92 enough left over to buy some penny candy

Oh, damn! I missed a couple of months there. Well. I'm going to pretend that I'm headed first to Tony's Hi-Way Sweet Shoppe, where he almost always has month-old comics lying around and pick up the two from September that I distinctly remember buying, lo, these 57-odd years ago before I get to this month's haul. They would be JLA 31 and World's Finest 145. The first was what I even thought at the time was a major step forward for comics, let alone for DC. A new member of the JLA and I was there to see him inducted! Plus it was hawkman and he looked so cool! Plus it had one of the most memorable covers I'd seen till then, and since. The other I wanted because not only did it feature one of my favorites, Green Arrow as the back-up story, but it was the follow-up to a unique "team-up" between him and fellow back-up boy Aquaman in which they swapped bailiwicks. The Aquaman segment had been reprinted in WF 144, and it was okay, but this was the one I'd been waiting for. So, down to $1.76 left to spend. No-o-oo- problem... First, here are the ones I bought that month: Batman 80 Page Giant #5 Again, I was learning that comics had a history and tradition all their own. This was Batman's Silver Anniversary, and these were the guaranteed "Greatest Adventures of the Dynamic Duo!" of those 25 years! Flash #149 Probably the first issue of Flash I'd bought, but the cover got me right away. Gave it a chance because it wasn't as science-fictiony as the Flash's comic usually looked. Justice League of America #32 I picked this up as often as I could. Superboy #117 Another comic aimed squarely at me: I was ten, and this comic invariably hit all the sweet spots. Just like the next one I bough back then... Adventure Comics #327 For the coolest Legionnaire name yet: Lone Wolf! Romance, melodrama, teenage angst (60s style), sacrifice and super-heroics. The Legion got its very own James Dean-ian bad boy. Almost too much to ask for in one story. BTW, this story should have been read to the accompaniment of the Shangri-Las singing "Leader of the Pack," which had just come out the month before. Would have worked on so many levels! Who says Mort Weisinger didn't dig that youth culture?! Brave and the Bold 57 Somehow I stumbled on a copy of this, a title I'd never seen before and wouldn't again for another 16 issues. I loved it! Metamorpho was a real wise-ass, the artwork by Ramona Fradon was refreshing and engaging and the story was over the top. (Not that I knew from Bob Haney back then.) Fifty-seven cents left... I'd've bought... Fightin' Five from Charlton Air War from Dell Gotta dig into my pocket for a penny, but I've got two, actually, the change from the dime I brought for my cup of soup at lunch! So three 12-centers to go. I'll grab... Batman 168, Blackhawk 203 and Hawkman 5.I'll grab me a piece of Bazooka and I am so ready to read!
