February 1965... A month I bought nothing. It must have been a cold month and I stayed in a lot. But if I'd had two bucks, I would have bought... Flash Annual, aka Eighty-Page Giant 9 to take a deep dive into the mythos of Earth-Two. Adventure Comics #331 to keep up with my teenaged pals in the Legion. Brave and the Bold #59 because team-ups! Challengers of the Unknown #43 because they're also called the Legion of Death-Cheaters! Hawkman #7 as if you need a reason to soak in the coolness of that costume. G.I. Combat #111 to re-fight World War two for the millionth time. Detective Comics #338 because Batman is always worth a peek. Plus, who didn't love the Elongated Man? Amazing Spider-Man #24 because even though I'd not yet heard of MC Escher, that cover is just so cool. Avengers #15 Lotsa heroes, lotsa villains, lotsa fighting. Daredevil #7 Nice, nice cover! Kid Colt Outlaw #122 No such thing as a bad Western, podnuh. Sgt. Fury #17 War comics meet super-heroes... what a concept! Two Gun Kid #75 See Kid Colt note above. Plus, the Alamo! Phantom #11 Great cover, great character. World War Stories #1 Between this and the Two-Gun Kid at the Alamo, who says comics aren't educational? Seven cents left for a pack of the new 1965 baseball cards... and two pieces of Bazooka.

A little more variety than usual, as the publishing schedules for the Lee- and Schwartz-edited titles allow me to pick up three Gold Keys and the latest issue of what will one day become my all-time favorite series.
Amazing Spider-Man #24 Atom #18
Avengers #15 Daredevil #7 Detective Comics #338
Fantastic Four #38 Green Lantern #36 Hawkman #7
Journey into Mystery #115 Magnus, Robot Fighter #10 Popeye #76
Sgt. Fury #17 Strange Tales #132 Tales of Suspense #65 Tales to Astonish #67 Tarzan #149
...all at 12 cents, with 8 cents left over which, combined with the 7 cents left over from last month, buys me
Brave and the Bold #59.
Cei-U! I summon the pile of pulpy pleasure!

okay, I'll bite. What will one day become your all-time favorite series? Sorry, I thought everybody here knew that Brave and the Bold is my favorite comic book. I have a complete rum From #51-20. Those will be the last floppies to leave my collection as I continue to thin it down.
Cei-U! I summon the warm fuzzies!

February 1965: I'll spend my $2 on these: 80 Page Giant Magazine #9/Flash I don't even like the Flash but I can't resist DC's 1960s Giants. DC, 25 cents Action #323 For the Supergirl story. DC, 12 cents Adventure #331 DC, 12 cents Amazing Spider-Man #24 Amazing Ditko cover, one of the truly classic covers of the Silver Age. And what is this "M.M.M. S." and why do they want me? Marvel, 12 cents Betty and Veronica #112 Archie, 12 cents Brave and the Bold #59 Some great Gil Kane cover art. DC, 12 cents Daredevil #7 Another classic Silver Age cover; this one's by Wally Wood. And look, the M.M.M.S. is still calling me! Marvel, 12 cents Falling In Love #74 DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #38 Okay M.M.M.S., you've got me! Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Romances #108 DC, 12 cents Heart Throbs #95 DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #56 Time-traveling me flips to the letters page and sees a letter in which LL #54 is lavishly praised. The letter's writer? Mr. Roy Thomas, a few months before he joins DC (for a mere week or two) and then Marvel. Something I love about buying old comics (IRL) is seeing future creators' letters in the letter columns. RT pops up a lot in early-mid '60s Marvel and DC lettercols. DC, 12 cents Metal Men #13 DC, 12 cents Tomb of Ligeia #1 Striking cover. Dell, 12 cents Young Romance #135 This promises to be a real tear-jerker. DC, 12 cents Once again it breaks down this way: 14 12-centers + 1 Giant @25 cents = $1.93. I'll spend the rest of the money on a candy I loved back in the day--a penny each!

Btw @jaska, your sig reminds me that when I first started posting on a comic book forum--must be, what, close to 15 years ago now? -- I too used those Batman '66 TV quotes in my sig. They are so wonderfully inane and for me, evoke nice memories.

Let's see what we've got.
Mad #65. Any month with Mad is a good month.
Amazing Spider-Man #24. Best Marvel ongoing.
Avengers #15. Okay book. But maybe buying it out of inertia.
Creepy #2. Amazing art in this mag.
Daredevil #7. Man that cover. Wally Wood is the best.
Fantastic Four #38. Second best Marvel book after Spider-man.
Journey Into Mystery #115. Thor keeps getting better. And Tales of Asgard is great.
Strange Tales #132. Dr. Strange is amazing. Human Torch is abominable.
Tales of Suspense #65. Meh.
Looks like that leaves me a mere 56 cents for SF digests and books and noir paperbacks. Those magazines get expensive.

Regarding that Two-Gun Kid story, allow me to quote from my index of that title:
"The Battle of the Alamo occurred in 1836, some four decades before the 1870s setting of the “Two-Gun Kid” series (Two-Gun would not even have been born at the time!). Given that and numerous other geographic and historical inaccuracies, this story must be considered apocryphal."
Cei-U! I summon the fail!
