Farrar, is a Zero bar a reverse Three Musketeers? I don't remember that one at all, but it looks great!

^^^^ Prince Hal , it was more like a reverse Milky Way bar, with a "white fudge" (white chocolate) coating. I found this picture and description online: It was tasty (as most candy bars were to me) but in retrospect I guess it was the color, unusual for a candy bar, that was its main attraction. Plus there weren't a lot of stores in my neighborhood that carried it, so it seemed somewhat "special" to me. I also recall having Zero Bars during family summer vacations at the Jersey shore. I haven't seen a Zero Bar in years, but it remains a part of my nostalgic zone. And your mention of the Three Musketeers bar reminds me that it was my second favorite candy bar. IIRC back then the standard TM bar was noticeably larger than most other candy bars. Anyway, every time I bought comics at the candy store, I'd also buy at least one candy bar, either a Zero or TM. Good times!

Good times! Yes, Three Musketeers bars were always longer than other candy bars! Good times, indeed! Btw, how far down the shore did you go, Farrar? We never really got to go much when we were kids, although we visited an uncle once when he rented a place in Beach Haven for a week in 1961, the summer before LBI got split in half by the Ash Wednesday storm. As we got older my sisters went down the shore all the time. I used to run down to Asbury when I was in college and didn't have to work an afternoon shift. One of my sisters has a house in Brick now. Like living in clover!

...Btw, how far down the shore did you go, Farrar? We never really got to go much when we were kids, although we visited an uncle once when he rented a place in Beach Haven for a week in 1961, the summer before LBI got split in half by the Ash Wednesday storm. As we got older my sisters went down the shore all the time. I used to run down to Asbury when I was in college and didn't have to work an afternoon shift. One of my sisters has a house in Brick now. Like living in clover! Prince Hal , that sounds lovely. The first few summers we went to Cape May a couple of times and Asbury Park a few times. My family wasn't well off financially and I only learned many years later--when I was well into adulthood--that we were there courtesy of the generosity of various friends of my parents, friends who owned residences or hotels there. I don't remember much about our vacations then, only that we ate well (better than at home)...plus since we were on vacation and were guests and as a treat, I was allowed to eat candy, including my beloved Zero Bars, with impunity (at home I could not eat candy, at least not in front of my mother. Oh, if she only knew... ) Later on, my maternal grandmother bought a bed and breakfast in Belmar, so that came in handy for us for a few summers. At Belmar I remember a wonderful kiosk on the beach, I guess it was a souvenir store--yes, it had Zero Bars!--and I bought a Woody Woodpecker comic from there and read that thing to pieces that summer. In subsequent summers I bought a lot of other comics from that kiosk, or rather my mother bought them for me, as I didn't have an allowance yet. She didn't like that I read comic books--but she knew that they'd keep me busy and out of trouble

I spent very little time down the shore in my NJ years. When I was very young my father took me to the annual teachers' convention in Atlantic City, where I got a Classics Illustrated comic. A few years later we took day trips to a place in Mantoloking a few years in a row to "swim" in the ocean a bit. When I was older I went to Asbury Park once or twice, and had a fun vacation in Cape May with my first wife.
Never saw a Zero bar, there or anywhere else.

Two bucks was more than I spent that month by far, as best I can remember. I was buying SPORT magazine and some other sports magazines much more regularly then, even forgoing comics (HORRORS!) to do so. They were big ticket items. I mean, SPORT cost 35 cents; I don't remember buying that month's, but I know I bought the previous issue and the next one. (I have copies of both that I bought a few years ago; my originals were long gone.) So first, I would have been grabbing this baby, with two of my favorites on the cover: Long way of saying, I'm only going to spend $1.65. Okay, here's my comics list: Adventure 338 Good news: super-babies; bad news: they didn't receive appropriate new names. I would've opted for Saturn Sis; Light Lassie; Chameleon Kiddo; Matter-Eater Mite; Element Elf; and Invisible Infant. Batman 175 An irresistible cover. Too bad the inside art is a perfect example of what MDG wrote over in the Batman thread about the shocking difference between so many of the exciting New Look Batman covers and the pedestrian art within. I never saw it to buy it, but somehow wangled a coy off a neighborhood kid in a trade. Detective Comics #345 Another great cover. This one I bought, but like Batman 175, the cover far outshone the interior. SPOILER ALERT: That shadow is being cast by the Blockbuster. Flash #156 Another one I bought back then. I wasn't usually a Flash reader, but this cover was so good, and in this case, since it was Infantino inside, too, there was no drop-off in quality. Rip Hunter 29 I was so thrilled to buy this, the only issue I'd ever seen on the stands. I had read a few at my rat-bastard cousin's house and loved them, but Rip apparently never made it out of Jersey City. An outstanding Gil Knae cover. (Is that a redundancy?) Naturally, it was the last issue of the series. I would have also picked up the following little gems: All-American Men of War #112 Helluva Heath cover, plus World War One! Doom Patrol #99 The kind of unexpected DC goofiness I loved. Justice League of America #39 A frikkin' 80-Page Giant, with three "novel-length stories? You betcha! Justice League of America #40 Gotta love the group books. And, throwing in a penny I found on the sidewalk, I'm able to buy one more, so I'll go with yet another bit of DC fun: Metamorpho #3! I loved that decapitated talking head of his and the Ramona Fradon art!

If I could, I would, but that’s an issue I don’t have.
What a classic fullback he was.

No issue of Mad this month. Sigh.
All-American Men of War #112 (Okay...that's a cool cover. Let's give this Balloon Buster guy a chance)
Amazing Spider-Man #31
Avengers #22
Creepy #6 (so expensive...so much great art)
Fantastic Four #45
Journey into Mystery #122
Strange Tales #139
Tales of Suspense #72
Tales to Astonish #74
Thunder Agents #1
Walt Disney's the Best of Donald Duck #1 (A reprint of Lost in the Andes...yeah...sign me up)
32 cents left over. Maybe I can find a used paperback.

First, a word to Prince Hal: that's Metamorpho #3, not #1.
Now then, this is gonna require some thought this time around. Let's start with my Marvel and DC "must-haves":
Amazing Spider-Man #31 Avengers #22 Batman #175
Detective Comics #345
Fantastic Four #45 Flash #156
Journey into Mystery #122 Justice League of America #40 Sgt. Fury #24 Strange Tales #139 Tales of Suspense #72 Tales to Astonish #74 X-Men #14
...all at 12 cents for a sub-total of $1.56. Next, I absolutely gotta have
Thunder Agents #1
...costing a quarter, raising my tab to $1.81. If we factor in the eight cents left over from the last two rounds, I have 27 cents left to spend. So I'll buy
Doom Patrol #99 Mighty Crusaders #1
...leaving 3 cents to pocket til next time. Not too shabby a haul, eh?
Cei-U! I summon the satisfied customer!

How did I miss seeing that. Wally Wood extravaganza. I summon the edit to my post. Yes, I stole your schtick. But just this once.
