We are also watching through Star Trek: The Next Generation on Amazon Prime. Halfway through season five! I've never seen the whole show before, so this is fun, too. My favorite season of my favorite show. Nice. When you're done, be sure to give DS9 a chance. It's as slow to start as Next Gen was, but it rivals TNG in excellence by the close. You can absolutely skip Voyager and Enterprise.

Yeah, I like the characters, so even the slow seasons are enjoyable, but I am surprised at how uneven it's been. I liked season 3 the best so far. 4 seemed like a regression to the earlier seasons, and I was afraid 5 was going to be slow as well, but it's really picked up the second half of the season so far. Still, TNG at it's worst is still a fun show. And I do plan to check out DS9. I've heard a lot of good things, and I like that it's a spin-off of sorts. Ha, noted.

Still, TNG at it's worst is still a fun show. I guess I see the seasons as follows: Season 1: Show took a really long time trying to find its characterizations and tone. First half of the season is practically unwatchable, but I like the last few episodes. Season 2: The show begins to hit a certain stride, and I find most episodes very enjoyable, but all the writers get dismissed after this season so the show feels very different (and, I think, better) after. Season 3: Has no idea what it wants to be. Most episodes, they seem to be staying as far away from Sci-Fi as possible, offering more political and human dramas, but then Yesterday's Enterprise and Best of Both Worlds knock our socks off when we least expect it. I always felt this was the most uneven of the seasons, with many excellent episodes, as well as many that bored me to tears. Season 4: New head writer. Show finds its new direction and tone. Season 5: Things just keep getting better. Ensign Ro, "Disaster," "Cause and Effect," and a number of other fantastic episodes. In my mind, this is the core of TNG. Season 6: Still pretty good, but less memorable. Season 7: As sad as I was to see the show end, I think it stopped at exactly the right point. It seems clear TNG was beginning to spin its wheels by this point, though most episodes were still high quality. It's a spin-off in the sense that it occurs in the same shared universe, but DS9 drops TNG's idealism in favor of more grounded characters and an ethically murkier world. The continuity is much richer as well. Instead of having individual episodes that people remember as their favorites, DS9 is better remembered for its story arcs. I have a hard time remembering what occurred in an individual episode because, after Season One, the stories were continuous, rarely resolving at the end of an episode.

Thanks for the info. I find it so interesting that we can have such different opinions of the individual seasons yet we both enjoy the show. Good stuff! One thing I especially enjoyed about Season 3 was human/political drama mixed with the Sci-Fi. I thought the mix of human stories and sci fi elements was when the show found the sweet spot. You can definitely feel the change in writers between the seasons, too.

"The Enemy" is a great example of all that was right with Season 3, but there were so many sleepers too!

Funny, I could have dozed through season 4 and half of 5. Different strokes for different folks. Also, does Worf ever actually manage to beat someone up? He seems to be the default "that character is so strong they took out WORF!" guy.

DS9 is better than TNG, but really it's just Babylon 5 with the serial numbers filed off. Watch Babylon 5 instead, if you haven't yet.

I haven't watched Babylon 5 yet, but even Straczynaski has backed off on claiming DS9 was a copy of the series. Considering that DS9 doesn't even begin to find a center until season 2, and that all the claims of it ripping off Babylon 5 were from Season One, I doubt the similarities are more than surface deep.

This would have been more impressive if prior to those takedowns you'd seen the Man of Steel do some real heavy-lifting combat scenes, but they skipped that part.

Mostly when beating on Jadzia The only massive non-Jadzia beating I could easily recall was in one of the very last episodes of the series (no spoilers here beyond it involving Gowron and Martok). I wouldn't be surprised if I'm forgetting a lot, though.

New Zealand comedy The Almighty Johnsons about the reincarnated Norse gods is going to make its US premiere on Syfy next month. It's already aired in most all other anglophone countries. Has anyone here seen it?
