If the goal is to try some things you're not used to, a quick challenge I'd offer is to read the first couple of issues of Crossfire. If I recall correctly, Mark Evanier rubs you the wrong way, so I'm guessing you haven't read any of this series he did with Dan Spiegle, which happens to be one of my very favorites from the 80's. For films, I'll suggest either of a couple of gently mind-blowing WTF favorites, Coherence or Triangle. It's best to go into them with no advance knowledge, which is how I believe you like to do it, anyway. I haven't seen Coherence, but I'll second Triangle as serious mind screw.
One other film recommendation that occurred to me after I posted those suggestions yesterday is an undeservedly obscure thriller called Judas Kiss (the 1998 film of that title, not the 2011 one). No one I've ever mentioned this film to has ever seen it, or even heard of it. Set (and filmed) in New Orleans, it stars Carla Gugino as a petty criminal who finds herself out of her depth when a scheme by her conniving boyfriend (Simon Baker in his pre-The Mentalist days) to kidnap a tech entrepreneur goes wrong and results in the murder of a witness, who they later discover was the wife of a senator. The whole cast is brilliant, but the real stand-outs are Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson, playing very much against type as the two primary investigators: Rickman as a world weary homicide cop who gets stuck with the case no one else wants because of the potential political fallout, and Thompson as the extremely rough-edged FBI agent brought in to investigate the kidnapping.

Vacation first strike- This morning I watched Fort Apache for the first time. Thanks to Prince Hal for the suggestion. Very enjoyable although it moved slowly at the beginning. I didn't really know what direction the movie would take until they introduced the Meachum character who was despicable. Spoilers : The two main villains of the flic were Meachum and the Henry Ford character. It made me mad that they all got massacred because they refused to replace the person who was abusing the Indians in the reservation. Other impressions: It was nice to see how many actors I recognized from other movies. Shirley Temple was a surprise and they had many of the cast from the Quiet man movie. It was nice to see the culture of the frontier in their gatherings and the comic relief of the 4 drunks.

I just read issues 1-5 of Something is killing the children. Thanks to @rags for the suggestion. Very interesting horror with plenty of gore and mystery to keep you coming back for more. The simplicity of the art adds to the terror of the events.

Just finished watching Superfly.Quite terrible and cheesy, but I finally saw it. Bad acting and a very low budget movie, but at least it had some nice Curtis Mayfield music.

Yeah, you often hear it spoken of together with Shaft but Shaft was a much better movie in every way - except for the soundtrack, as you mention. But I still found Superfly entertaining in a B-movie kind of way, I must admit.

If you're watching 70s films, try The Warriors

Saw this film, Zardoz yesterday and finished it this morning. I'm guessing that Connery wasn't getting any film offers after he left the James Bond franchise. What utter crap.

I like Zardoz myself - it's just so weird and out there. That doesn't mean it's actually a good movie, of course, I've never really made my mind up about that. Might be due for a re-viewing.

Zardoz is a very interesting film - it's pretty high-concept SF wrapped up in some very '70s low-budget trappings. You can find a really good analysis of the movie and its themes at this blog post from a few years ago. That said - as I noted in the comments to the aforementioned blog post - it's a film I don't think I'll ever watch again, just because of the harsh and disturbing aspects of its subject matter. And while I haven't seen it in years, I recall enjoying Superfly quite a bit. One of the better, and iconic, Blaxploitation films. The soundtrack by Mayfield is arguably the best ever.
