I eased my pain by picking this up for 7 bucks. I was tempted to pick up the three first wave figures of that line on clearance today, but I resisted the temptation. I love the retro packaging, but dislike the sculpts. -M

Contrast that with the Star Wars Retro collection, which was grabbed up at every retailer carrying them. Well, except for Lando figures, as he--and sometimes Leia--are the "abandoned" figures the most rabid fans regularly leave on the pegs long enough to make it clearance prices.

Well, except for Lando figures, as he--and sometimes Leia--are the "abandoned" figures the most rabid fans regularly leave on the pegs long enough to make it clearance prices. They were Walmart exclusives, and the first shipments of the first wave sold out at most locations. The issue was McFarlane took that to mean there was still a lot of demand and did a huge resupply on those initial figures at the same time that wave 2 hit. However it seems the initial sell out was enough to meet the demand and there was a glut of those 3 wave one figures with the restock. Same thing is happening with the vehicles but they haven't hit clearance yet as they might have a longer shelf life. Wave 2 has been selling briskly too, and wave 3 has created a lot of positive buzz, so I'd say overall the line did ok, and is still doing well, but it was a miscalculation of how much demand for a restock of wave 1 (rushed to be available for the holidays) there actually was that is leading to the clearance. You might not see clearance for waves 2 and 3 if they avoid that. -M

The other big difference is that the Star Wars Retro collection actually used the vintage molds, not just the retro cardbacks. Many a Super Powers collector, myself included, would love the same. A number of folks were put off by the "updates" McFarlane made with these, there's some strong division in the action figure community with McFarlane and the DC license in general actually but that's another topic. I believe a comparable Super Powers "retro collection" with original molds (and mini comics) would do really well.
Still, $7 for this Superman is a great deal! I think this is one of the better ones they did from this line.

Recently started getting some of these re-booted?! McFarlane Super Powers figures. Nice line. So far, I've got the Darkseid & Flash. Several comments:
-I completely missed the original '80's SP line, but always wanted to collect them. So, it's nice to be getting figures that are semi-reproductions of the originals, but without having to pay and arm & a leg for the Vintage versions.
-When I first looked at these new figures, I thought they were significantly larger than the original Super Powers versions (never having had any of the originals). However, in doing some research it appears the newer figures - while being somewhat taller/bigger than the originals - aren't incredibly bigger.
-I don't really miss the "action feature" (from the original toys) too much. Since I will probably be keeping these carded (the packaging is great!) I don't mind this. Plus, I completely understand that the functionality of the action feature will probably degrade over time; so, not sure how necessary that is. IMHO, the most important element to these re-releases is that should resemble the originals as much as possible - which they do....for the most part (see below).
- Though I'm usually a stickler/purist when it comes to re-released toys like this....I actually don't mind that the new SP Darkseid has a newer design/outfit & looks different than the '80's version.
-I would definitely be interested in this line being expanded. If it is, hopefully they'll stick with initially re-making all of the original figures. Many of these were very HTF, especially the later figures (Cyborg; Samurai; etc.). I'd also definitely want the Clark Kent figure re-released; IIRC, this was a mail-in figure only, so was obviously not easy to track down. I'd rather see these than additional characters - at least not until the originals are all re-made.
That being said, I completely understand that if even a small portion of the original figures are re-made, we will be lucky.

It's more a gimmick retro card art thing than an actual attempt to resurrect the old toy line. They took a page out of the same playbook Marvel used when it released some of its Legends figures with the old 1990s Toybiz card art. These guys are definitely bigger and do not look similar at all. I really wanted to get into the line because I grew up on Super Powers, but there is nothing of SP to be found in this line at all. Too bad, really.

You're the first I have come across who doesn't like the vehicles. That said, I haven't gone out looking for opinions on them, just those I have run across on the Mego related media I check out occasionally. -M

It sounds like I'm in the minority on here re: liking the SP McFarlane line. They do remind me of the original figures, and I also like how the colors are more vivid (than the originals) in some cases.
I don't have the interest, time, or $ to try & track down the original SP figures (which I never collected ATT). So, again - IMHO these are a great alternative to the Vintage toys.

I found an Aquaman and Robin at Meijers today... They join Superman and Batman. Haven't seen Shazam, GL or FLash in the wild yet. -M

At one Wal-Mart (which had empty Mego pegs for months), suddenly Shazam, Green Lantern, a couple of Robin & Aquaman figures. I have never come across GL or Shazam in the wild until this time, so needless to say, I bought them. As expected, Batman has not been on a Wal-Mart peg since the 1st month of its release (thankfully, I managed to get them from an online company), and of course, some have tried to sell them for a zillion times above the retail price on eBay.

After a long dry drought, Wal-Mart suddenly has pegs full of Megos (as of last week)--but its only Aquaman and Green Lantern for some reason. I see no evidence of additional "$19.95" pegs where other figures would have hung. Still, Green Lantern was once a hot seller that could not be found anywhere, and now there's plenty. If Batman ever shows up again (though I doubt it), I feel compelled to get one more.

So the only one that I think is out that I haven't seen is Flash.
