As a side note, I looked to see if Deadman was still available on Amazon, and it was on sale for about a third off, so I ordered one. -M I picked up Firestorm strictly because it was on sale. Was never a huge fan of the character, but I’ll buy it it’s cheap. |

Anytime I can get a Mego figure in the retro boxes for under $20, it's a sale. Beyond that, I'm still waiting for them to start releasing giftsets. It blows my mind that they haven't taken this route yet. Not only could we pick up four or five related figures at one time instead of having to track them down individually or wait for ensuing waves, but Mego could create scenes or elaborate backdrops with the packaging to make it even more special. I really wish they'd take this route.

Wow. I was totally unaware of these. Of course they missed both of the positive qualities I mentioned above (only two figures, nothing special about the display) so maybe the issue was less that folks didn't want giftsets and more that these were lackluster offerings. The Mirror Universe figures were, outside of Trelane, the single most requested Star Trek figures among Mego fandom. And when they were given them, that fandom responded by not buying them. Which is far more common in fandom that you would expect. Fans say they want a particular thing all the time, yet rarely back that up and speak with their wallet to buy it when given what they asked for. There's a common wisdom to never listen or given people what they say they want, because they don't actually know what they actually want. You can only believe their buying patterns, not what they say or post saying what they want because it's rarely ever true. They always find some reason to not buy the things they said they wanted. Happens in comics, happens in toys, happens in the rpg industry, etc. The truth is in actual buying patterns not in what people say. So when people said they wanted gift sets and multipacks, then didn't buy them, it ended any chance Mego would do more. The packaging added tot he costs, retailers didn't want bigger packages taking up more shelf space that didn't cost significantly more to pay for the prime real estate they took up, etc. Returns and damages were significantly higher on these than on other offerings in the line. -M |

Now, granted, I'm one person, but I do know what I want and what I'll pay for it. In terms of returns and damages, that could be solved by only doing giftsets via direct sales. Bigbadtoystore and other such companies tend to be meticulous about condition as opposed to Wal Mart and Target. Remember those gorgeous holiday star wars gifsrts Hasbro did about a decade back? They sold like wildfire because they were beautiful and had great pieces inside of them. I'd love to see more companies try that via direct sales. |

Going online exclusive lowers production runs, turns economy of scale against you, and raises prices on the product, which then in turns lowers sales and makes it less appealing to many potential customers. As your audience shrinks, so does the viability of your line of products and your chances of finding new customers to replace those lost or to potentially grow your line. It's the same issues the direct market caused in comics that we are seeing the effects of the past decade. The more you limit the availability and access to your product, the more you reduce potential sales and inhibit growth, and the key to any line's success is growth. Online selling like that is short term thinking and problem solving, which usually only creates even more and more serious problems in the long term. Until you get toy companies having to crowdfund products and produce only what they presell (which is essentially what direct market comic publishers do now too). Collectors think it's great, but it's bad business practices and a terrible business model for the lifespan of a company and a product line. -M |

Marty Abrams and Company announced their Marvel Mego figures will be released in December of this year as a 4-pack, with each figure in a replica window box from the 1970s. It seemed he was also suggesting the 4-pack arrangement was part of Disney's demands and that the items only sell through the online Disney store and at their amusement parks. They're being secretive about which four Marvel characters will be in the first wave. My wish would be that its all 70s re-pops and not previously unproduced characters (IOW, no Wolverine, Venom, etc.).
More Marvel 4-packs are expected throughout 2025. No word on future DC-based releases, or I missed it in the interview.
