Possible Reviewing/Reading Crazy Idea??!!* I have been thinking about doing a complete New Guardians review thread since I bought the whole 12 issue series on a whim off ebay about 18 months ago. It might be fun to see whether it's so bad it's good or just plain bad. I'm comically bad at figuring out & remembering how to post images. I don't know if I have the patience to write a reviews. Finally, I'm not sure whether anyone would care to read the thread and post there. If I can overcome those three reservations, I might do it. Is this the series that spun off the crappy Millennium series? You're a braver man than me , and I reviewed Liefeld's Youngblood run last year.

I read some of Millennium when it came out, but never read New Guardians. I realized some members of the Green Lantern Corps appeared in the series after the cancellation of GLC, but I know the series was widely panned. So I figured it might be sad to read by myself, but glorious for a review thread.

I suspect I’ll read some funnybooks. I may review a few. I'm golden. I did all of that.

Let's see: 1) Do a deep dive on the 2013 Eisner-nominated books that became classic comics this year. 2) Finish all of the books I'm currently reading. 3) Shorten my reading list. Ideally, I want to binge read half a dozen titles per month. 4) Read Eisner's graphic novels and Corto Maltese (shout out to shaxper.) 5) Read a couple more manga series. I have a nagging desire to finish Cerebus even though I may live to regret it. Let's see: 1) I didn't get to read everything I wanted to from 2013, but I got through a decent amount. 2) Hopeless. I continued starting new books all year long. 3) I shortened it somewhat by taking breaks from books I was reading. Recently, I've tried harder to binge read books instead of reading 2-4 issues per month. 4) Read an Eisner novel and the first Corto Maltese story. Wasn't inspired to continue with either at this point in time. 5) Managed to do this. Didn't go near Cerebus this year.

When I say finish it, I mean the last 50 issues or so. I stopped buying it during the Going Home arc. High Society, Church & State, and Jaka's Story are among the finest comic books ever created.

I haven't really thought about this too much, but.... Collection/Buying Goals: -Get at least 5 more of the Iron Man v.1 books I'm still missing (17 total). I'm not really wiling to by #55 (I may just get the Marvel Milestone version at some point).. but there are a bunch of early ones still left. - get another couple sets of plastic long boxes to replace the disintergrating cardboard ones. - Make some progress on the Avengers era I don't have (from 120-180 or so) - Maybe some Damian Wayne books? I'm sure some other stuff will come up as I go along Reading Goals -I made good progress on getting through my backlog, but then I bought a bunch a stuff. I'm going to make a concerted effort to read more of the DC silver age stuff I have in SHowcase volumes that I've had for a while sitting there. -I want to re-read some stuff I haven't read for a while... I have a few candidates. I may even try a review thread again, though I'm far less good at them than alot of the others around here. I definitely got a few Iron Man books early in the year, then I paused to make sure I had everything together. I only got a couple new plastic boxes due to my oldest daughter moving back home and limited my manuvering space. I ended up moving from working on Avengers to working on X-Men... I have the first 7 epics (which goes through days of future past) and I'm working on having the rest of the orginal run. I got a good chunk in a couple dollar bins. rom As far as reading goals go, I've definitely make some good progress on my long ignored to-read milk crate, which when from overflowing to down to 2/3s full. I read several bits of my DC showcases, and finished the Challengers one, so that was some big progress too. I also did a bit of re-reading... Spidey 2099 and late 70s Iron Man. No review threads though, I'm just not as good as it as some. Overall I'm pretty pleased.

Assessing my success with my 2023 goals. Ah 2023, what does thou have in store for me? I don't know, but this is what I want to accomplish. I know for certain I will not be working this year, so I know I will have plenty of time. I want to be more productive with that time overall. A lot of that will come down to how I choose to spend my time. It also limits my budget when it comes to acquiring and spending on organization. I want to spend less time online overall and more time reading and watching the piles of stuff I have accumulated and waiting for the right time to get to. I want 2023 to be the beginning of that time, so I am setting some high tallies for reading and viewing. Reading/viewing goalsSo I am setting weekly goals for myself, that will add up to a yearly goal. They are aggressive, and I may not make it each week, but I hope the productive weeks will make up for the unproductive ones... Comics-5/day -1825 for the year Prose-200 pages/week-10.400 pages for the year movies-1/week-52 for the year TV episodes/podcasts-5/week -260 for the year All of these are higher than I got to this year, some significantly so. I switched the basis for setting goals for prose from books to pages, as there are a couple of hefty volumes I want to get to this year that will limit the # of books I read because they will take longer. So as of right now, I met all of these except the comic reading goal, and I am going ot be well short of that. 5 per day was unrealistic, I average closer to 3.5. My totals as of today were: 1290 comics 11,433 words 55 movies 441 episodes/podcasts With a week to go, my good reads count is at 96. I did quite well with this. Everything, except a handful of magazine sized books is bagged & boarded and put away in the boxes they belong in. I do have more to do with cataloging what is in each box, but the basic infrastructure is complete, everything has a place, and just about everything is in that place. I bought more than expected, but did manage to keep things mostly focused on those targeted collections, but expanded the Bronze Bats target to some other Bat-related stuff. I did manage to complete several smaller and a few medium sized runs (biggest was completing Sgt. Rock from the time it changed form Our Army at War to Sgt Rock (#302ish) until in ended at 3422 including all annuals, but also finished some smaller runs like Legends of the DC Universe, Adventures in the DC Universe, Xenozoic Tales, and more. Added a bunch of Kubert books, lots of Scrooge, lots of Usagi, a handful of Toth and Frazetta books, completed the Ghost Rider in Spotlight except for #5, got the 70s Ghost Rider down to needing just 6 and the 90s Ghost Rider to just 2). I even managed to add a couple of minor Matt Baker books. This last part was a big NOPE for the most part. Other than do some owrk on my current campaigns I did not get much of anything creative accomplished this year. I did cut down my online presence for a large chunk of the year (even quit these forums for 5 months). There still too much negativity and toxic culture on line and with next year being an election year, it's only going to get worse, so I plan to try to spend even less tie online in '24. So except for getting my creative productivity on, it was a successful year for meeting goals. We'll see what next year brings. -M

Reading Goals
* I've read Defenders through #60 and now have the rest of the series through the end (#152). I want to read at least half of the remainder of the series (so at least #61 through #107). Nope. Tried about a month ago to start with #61, but I wasn't in the mood.
* I've binged Daredevil at various times up to #311. I have floppies or TPBs of #312-364. I want to read all or substantial part of that (like at least to #344) DONE. Read every issue from #312-364.
* Continue my read-through of New Mutants in its entirety. If I'm not feeling it partway through, my plan B would be to skip ahead and read 70-something to the end (#100), because that's the one period with a bunch of issues I've never read before. DONE!!! Not only did I read New Mutants #1-100. I read the graphic novel, the Special, the Summer Special, Annual #1-7 (except the back stories from #6), Fallen Angels #1-8, X-Terminators #1-4, and numerous guest appearances and crossovers.
* Re-read some X-Men, X-Factor, and related titles. As part of my New Mutants binge read, I read two arcs from Wolverine, the Inferno issues of X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men, the X-Tinction Agenda issues of X-Factor and Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor #40-41, the X-Men/Micronauts mini-series, and various guest appearances of the New Mutants in the Uncanny X-Men. I also re-read Giant-Size X-Men #1, (Uncanny) X-Men #94-110, and some guest appearances via the X-Men Second Genesis Epic Collection.
* Finally read my Jack Kirby's New Gods TPB after a couple previous stops and starts. DONE
* Read more Legion of Super-Heroes comics I haven't read before. I definitely want to resume 5 Years Later where I left off. Other possibilities are the post-Grell, pre-Giffen period or the Archies Legion/Reboot era. I read Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #18-24 and Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes All New Collectors' Edition, the giant treasury-sized comic from 1978. I also re-read the crossover between the Baxter Legion of Super-Heroes series and the Byrne Superman titles that dealt with the Pocket Universe Superboy concept.
* Binge a DC Omnibus: either Bronze Age Justice League of America vol. 2 and/or Bronze Age The Brave and the Bold vol. 2. I read all of the Broze Age JLA vol. 2.
* Read Huntress #1-6 from the series launched a few years after Crisis. DONE
* Read some non-Big Two and/or non-superhero comics. I read the Concrete: Depths TPB. I read the Action Heroes Archives vol. 1, which I'd consider non-Big Two because it reprints Captain Atom stories that were originally published by Charlton. I also just finished the first TPB of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Preludes & Nocturnes. Although it has a couple superhero cameos, I don't consider it a superhero title.
Buying Goals
* Buy less than I read. I haven't kept count, but I feel certain I failed to buy less than I read.
* If I like the issues of Huntress that I read, decide whether to get the rest of that short-lived series Decided not to buy any more issues as I didn't enjoy it that much.
Possible Reviewing/Reading Crazy Idea??!!
* I have been thinking about doing a complete New Guardians review thread since I bought the whole 12 issue series on a whim off ebay about 18 months ago. Finally, I'm not sure whether anyone would care to read the thread and post there. If I can overcome those three reservations, I might do it. Nope. So far, I'm dedicated enough to write way too long Read Lately posts about what I read, but too lazy to write a review thread.

I've managed to go pretty far on a leftover resolution from 2022 by exploring the world of jungle comics, sampling one of every jungle-based series I can dig up. My list has grown a lot as I poke around, but right now I have only 23 individual comic book titles left, and some of those are so closely related that I'll cover multiples in a single review. I'll finish this up in the new year...I've got a real whopper of a post cooking, with a jungle hero that turned out to be a richer mine of commentary, history, and company policy than I'd ever have expected. I've got an early example of shared universe jungle comics from a company that wasn't known for that kind of thing. I've got inexplicable name changes, comics that no one but me would categorize as jungle comics, an under-the-radar tv adaptation, and more from a character who got a lot of attention in the Classic Comics Christmas 2023.

As usual I didn't read as many "new" things as I had planned but I still hope to get in one more post-2000 book before the end of the year.

I didn't do nearly as well in my re-reading goals as I'd hoped in 2023. I only managed to complete re-reading three of the runs I wanted to, as you can see below. I am currently about half way through a sporadic re-read of the J. Michael Straczyski run of Amazing Spider-Man, but at the rate I'm going, it'll likely be another couple of months before I finish it. Ah well, there's always 2024. ... I think my biggest goals for the coming year will be reading ones. There are a number of fairly long-ish runs in my collection that I really want to re-read from start to finish, including... • Alias (including The Pulse and Jessica Jones series) • Amazing Spider-Man (the J. Michael Straczyski run) • Astro City • Batman: Knightfall/Knights Quest/Nights End • the Contract with God trilogy• Elfquest - the first 10 years (1978-1988) • Fables (issues #1-75) • The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones• Justice (New Universe) #1-32 • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen • Miracleman (want to re-read this as Marvel is now publishing the long-awaited conclusion) • Star Wars: Dark Times
