2023 Classic Comics New Year's Resolutions Thanks as always to Icctrombone for starting this tradition! It's that time once again, folks! If you did any 2022 New Years Resolutions, let us know how they turned out and then make some new ones for the new year here! Buying Goals- At this point, I'm always excited to find a new run to savor, as well as obscure and forgotten classics. Nothing specific in mind, but as long as I read more than I buy and I find room for it all, I'm happy. Selling Goals- Who knows where the market will be in 2023? I'd definitely like to do some more selling when I have time in the summer, but I'm hesitent to set any specific goals. Maybe my goal is to finally sell some of the many many vintage action figures and Transformers that I've long since moved out of my collection, but which are taking up space in my basement. I can always find local buyers for those. Reading Goals I'm serious about working towards- Read at least one classic novel from beginning to end, likely Les Miserables. - Spend at least a half hour reading something with Amber each week (comics, novels, whatever) - Re-read at least two classics run in my collection. What's the point of saving back issues if you only read them once? There is so much good stuff that I want to savor again. - Take on at least two massive unread runs remaining in my collection, possibly including: - Byrne's Fantastic Four - Simonson's Thor (time to give it another chance!) - Defenders #1-60 - Ditko's Spider-Man - Grimjack - Astro City - Sandman Mystery Theatre - Dreadstar - New Mutants all the way up to #100 (I think I got thru the first 25 issues on a previous reading attempt over two decades ago) - Read some or all of the giant stack of Dell Four Color comics I picked up at a sale last summer. - Maybe get caught up with The Cerebus Reading SocietyEssential Reviewing GoalsAs with last year, I'm taking a very different approach to this. Rather than committing a certain number of reviews to each of my review threads, I'm pledging to write a minimum of 5 reviews per month in whichever threads compel me at the time. That's a total of at least sixty reviews in 2023. And I can allocate those sixty reviews in whatever way I feel. For example, I could: - Do two years' worth of Justice League reviews, getting it caught up with my Superman in the Post-Crisis Era reviews and my The Complete Batman: 1979-2011 reviews so that I can maintain all three threads together in real-time going forward. That would take about 30 reviews to pull off. - Get to the Death of Superman in Superman in the Post-Crisis Era reviews. That would take probably 40 reviews to achieve. - Finish The Batman Family and Beyond: 1975-1990. I probably have less than 20 reviews left to write. Judging by number of likes and replies, this is probably my least popular review thread, but I'm really enjoying it and gaining a new understanding of these characters. - Take New Teen Titans and Beyond all the way to The Judas Contract. This would take about 25 reviews. - Spend some more time on The Complete Batman: 1955-1979 along with Hoosier X. I really enjoy writing these and will be surprised if I don't spend a lot of time in that thread again this year. - Put some serious time into The Complete Batman: 1979-2011 for the first time in years. I've really let this one go. - Finish Atari Force, which would only take ten more reviews, but I keep putting it off. - Put a serious dent in Nick Fury in the Silver Age. I keep considering returning, but I haven't touched it in years. - Start a whole other review thread that I don't have the time for. I keep toying with doing Hal Jordan in the Silver Age or The Valiant Universe. I likely won't take on a new review thread when I have so many that still require my attention, but I keep thinking about it all the same! Happy New Year, everyone!!

Ah 2023, what does thou have in store for me?
I don't know, but this is what I want to accomplish. I know for certain I will not be working this year, so I know I will have plenty of time. I want to be more productive with that time overall. A lot of that will come down to how I choose to spend my time. It also limits my budget when it comes to acquiring and spending on organization.
I want to spend less time online overall and more time reading and watching the piles of stuff I have accumulated and waiting for the right time to get to. I want 2023 to be the beginning of that time, so I am setting some high tallies for reading and viewing.
Reading/viewing goals So I am setting weekly goals for myself, that will add up to a yearly goal. They are aggressive, and I may not make it each week, but I hope the productive weeks will make up for the unproductive ones...
Comics-5/day -1825 for the year Prose-200 pages/week-10.400 pages for the year movies-1/week-52 for the year TV episodes/podcasts-5/week -260 for the year
All of these are higher than I got to this year, some significantly so. I switched the basis for setting goals for prose from books to pages, as there are a couple of hefty volumes I want to get to this year that will limit the # of books I read because they will take longer.
I will also set my Goodreads Reading Challenge goal at 87 again and that includes prose, GN/TPB, art books, gaming supplements etc.
Organization Goals I want to get the rest of my comics organized, bagged/boarded, etc. I am up through the U's and have a few special collections not alphabetized to get through. The bulk of my comic spending will be focused on getting the supplies I need to finish this rather than buying back issues.
Buying Goals I will still participate in the weekly auctions in the Gem City group picking up things here and there on the cheap. I plan on attending 1 or 2 Jim and Dan Shows, both Champion City shows, and possibly Gem City Comic Con, so I will pick up some books at those shows, but other than that, acquisitions will be fairly limited.
As of right now, I plan on working on making progress on the recreation of my childhood collection, red dress covers, and working on the series/collections I have targeted, such as D&D comics, Ghost Rider, Bronze Bats, Uncle Scrooge, Kubert books, Toth books, Baker books, Usagi, Scooby, etc. How much I get depends on how the budget works out.
I may also pick up some more of the 3.75 retro Marvel Legends figures that I don't have.
Creative Goals I also want to get back to actually creating stuff in 2023. Dabbling in a little more game design for ttrpg and other writing. Doing a little bit more crafty and artistic stuff too. Possibilities include:
-developing a new campaign setting for a new campaign that will launch sometime later in 2023 when one of our current campaigns wraps up
-using the world building for that setting as a back drop for some short fiction featuring original characters
-spending more time developing the current campaigns I have in progress
-creating some set pieces or scatter terrain for use at the table in my campaigns
-paint the small amount of unpainted miniatures we have accumulated over the last 2 years since our current game group launched
-(this one is a longshot) finally getting around to making some of the custom Megos I got a lot of resources/supplies to do just before the pandemic sprung on us. The goal is to make some fantasy/D&D themed Megos, and possibly even the Heroes of the Lance form Dragonlance, but my ambition is much higher than my skill level in this, so any time I spend on this this year will mostly be riding the learning curve to get me up to a level I can do something I don't despise.
These are very aggressive goals, and I am most likely setting myself up for some level of failure, but they are all offshoots of the main resolution that I have this year which revolves around time management-to use the time do have more productively. So even I fall short of the goals, if striving for them helps me move away from the inertia of unproductive time (online doomscrolling, engaging in unhealthy or toxic interactions online, wallowing in online negativity in a lot of fandoms, etc.), it will be a success. However,an offshoot of me being successful is that I may be posting here and elsewhere far less. I'll be around, just a lot less.

Let's see:
1) Do a deep dive on the 2013 Eisner-nominated books that became classic comics this year. 2) Finish all of the books I'm currently reading. 3) Shorten my reading list. Ideally, I want to binge read half a dozen titles per month. 4) Read Eisner's graphic novels and Corto Maltese (shout out to shaxper.) 5) Read a couple more manga series.
I have a nagging desire to finish Cerebus even though I may live to regret it.

Subject to revision over the next couple of days as I think more about it:
Reading Goals
* I've read Defenders through #60 and now have the rest of the series through the end (#152). I want to read at least half of the remainder of the series (so at least #61 through #107).
* I've binged Daredevil at various times up to #311. I have floppies or TPBs of #312-364. I want to read all or substantial part of that (like at least to #344)
* Continue my read-through of New Mutants in its entirety. If I'm not feeling it partway through, my plan B would be to skip ahead and read 70-something to the end (#100), because that's the one period with a bunch of issues I've never read before.
* Re-read some X-Men, X-Factor, and related titles.
* Finally read my Jack Kirby's New Gods TPB after a couple previous stops and starts.
* Read more Legion of Super-Heroes comics I haven't read before. I definitely want to resume 5 Years Later where I left off. Other possibilities are the post-Grell, pre-Giffen period or the Archies Legion/Reboot era.
* Binge a DC Omnibus: either Bronze Age Justice League of America vol. 2 and/or Bronze Age The Brave and the Bold vol. 2.
* Read Huntress #1-6 from the series launched a few years after Crisis.
* Read some non-Big Two and/or non-superhero comics.
Buying Goals
* Buy less than I read.
* If I like the issues of Huntress that I read, decide whether to get the rest of that short-lived series
Possible Reviewing/Reading Crazy Idea??!!
* I have been thinking about doing a complete New Guardians review thread since I bought the whole 12 issue series on a whim off ebay about 18 months ago. It might be fun to see whether it's so bad it's good or just plain bad. I'm comically bad at figuring out & remembering how to post images. I don't know if I have the patience to write a reviews. Finally, I'm not sure whether anyone would care to read the thread and post there. If I can overcome those three reservations, I might do it.

I haven't really thought about this too much, but....
Collection/Buying Goals:
-Get at least 5 more of the Iron Man v.1 books I'm still missing (17 total). I'm not really wiling to by #55 (I may just get the Marvel Milestone version at some point).. but there are a bunch of early ones still left.
- get another couple sets of plastic long boxes to replace the disintergrating cardboard ones.
- Make some progress on the Avengers era I don't have (from 120-180 or so)
- Maybe some Damian Wayne books?
I'm sure some other stuff will come up as I go along
Reading Goals
-I made good progress on getting through my backlog, but then I bought a bunch a stuff. I'm going to make a concerted effort to read more of the DC silver age stuff I have in SHowcase volumes that I've had for a while sitting there.
-I want to re-read some stuff I haven't read for a while... I have a few candidates. I may even try a review thread again, though I'm far less good at them than alot of the others around here.

Although I vaguely intend to continue buying issues from runs I'm trying to complete, like Steve Englehart's Dr. Strange and Bronze Age Jonah Hex, I think my biggest goals for the coming year will be reading ones. There are a number of fairly long-ish runs in my collection that I really want to re-read from start to finish, including...
• Alias (including The Pulse and Jessica Jones series) • Amazing Spider-Man (the J. Michael Straczyski run) • Astro City • Batman: Knightfall/Knights Quest/Nights End • the Contract with God trilogy • Elfquest - the first 10 years (1978-1988) • Fables (issues #1-75) • The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones • Justice (New Universe) #1-32 • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen • Miracleman (want to re-read this as Marvel is now publishing the long-awaited conclusion) • Star Wars: Dark Times
As far as review threads go, I have at least a couple of the more recent Sandman graphic novels still to review for my Sandman thread. I'm also still considering doing a Bronze Age era Amazing Spider-Man review thread, but I've been saying that for the last three years at least, so don't hold your breath.

Based on reading reviews by Slam_Bradley, I would like to check out more classic Disney stuff. I read little DC and Marvel last year (vintage stuff aside), and it was nice and different. Gotta check out some more Beagle Boys tales. I’d also like to broaden my horizons with manga. I’ve ready very little.

Thin out my collection by donating most of the newer comics (last 10 years) that I have bought.

I resolve to read some comics, write some reviews and make long-winded posts.
Keeping it simple.

I’m going to be aggressive with my reading goals but I suspect that like in years past, my interest in some of these will wane.
Firm Goals: Finish my reread of JSA and Justice Society of America Reread of The Sandman Reread of Fables and various spinoffs and get to The Black Forest The complete Richard Dragon, Kung Fu Fighter Reread the Denny O’Neil The Question Rereading the 2 volumes of DC’s Star Trek series Finish my reread of the 2011 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from IDW
Broad Goals: Bronze Age Incredible Hulk Bronze Age Batman Bronze Age Superman More classic Archie comics More Disney Duck comics
I would also like to do a much, much better job at being caught up with new, monthly comics. I’ve been behind on a lot of my reading since 2020…and like a black hole, I keep getting sucked in deeper.
Generally, when it comes to my collecting goals, I don’t have a big list, but I have a few things.
DC's Sherlock Holmes #1 from 1975.
I also have to track down some the Facsimile Editions that I missed, specifically:
Superman #1 Marvel Family Comics #1
Other than that, I usually just kinda buy stuff as I go. Same goes for my collectible hunting.

Dang; I just realized I blew the third part of my resolution with too few sentences.
Gonna be a long year!

I plan to continue reading things from the late 1950s and early 1990s but I've been so consistent with those that I can't really call it a resolution. So, as in the last few years, my main goal is to read more new stuff, which for my purposes I'm counting as anything from 2000 on: at least one book per month, hopefully more. I haven't been doing too well with this lately so I'm going to try to be more conscientious this year.

Was thinking about this part of your post... - Take on at least two massive unread runs remaining in my collection, possibly including: - Ditko's Spider-Man Would you be reviewing this run if you get around to reading it? I for one would love to read a Lee/Ditko Spider-Man review thread by you, as well as follow along and chime in with my own thoughts.
