Have I heard of Dragon's Kiss?? Sir. Yes, it's great, as well as Cacophony. I still think his work with Megadeth is my favorite as that creative synergy pairing is just one of those all-time greats, but this effort is my favorite of his solo works overal. I should have known better than to even ask!! But yeah, RIP made total history, no argument there. I think some familiar ground is in order to wrap up the work day. I am thinking early Korn. I want some groove today. BALL TONGUE!!!!! 90's era Korn rules.

This is a favorite later Sabbath album.... Bought it while I was in the Navy, in my Ship's Store. We would get a selection of cassettes to sell (we had a small store, the size of a Foto-Mat, which sold essentials, like cigarettes, and a few small luxury items) and it was one of the cassettes we got in. I also bought Queen's The Miracle and one of the Pet Shop Boys' albums (I have varied tastes in music. I once bought Twisted Sister, Booker T & the MGs and a Petula Clark compilation, at the same store). Great choice, Tony Martin era is highly underrated, I regret waiting so many years to finally explore.

Sigh. They've finally done it. They made a Funko Pop I would actually want.

Today I am going with some more modern instrumental metal. Specifically, Jeff Loomis Mercurial album. Probably most famous for his time in Nevermore (which I will almost certainly put on after this now that I am listening to him), his solo work is nothing to scoff at.
He is a monstrously talented player. After Arch Enemy hired him as their second guitarist recently, I was shocked to learn Amott didn't let him write his solos on their new album. Amott wrote them all because it's his baby. I can understand that to a point, but what a waste of talent.
It'd be like a team hiring one of the most successful coaches in the country and only letting him call other people's plays. Yeah, he can do it, but man, you are missing out on a lot of what you're paying for.

Ok, this is getting scary how close we are thinking, I was planning on posting a Jeff Loomis clip this morning, I was just debating between Nevermore or his solo stuff like you posted. Yeah, he's just flat out one of the best, and another huge personal hero. So to disclose a little more, as we got to the end of the 90's, early 2000's, my tastes went heavily into this style. Alexi Laiho who I mentioned before from COB was my biggest influence, but Michael Romeo and Jeff Loomis would be VERY close (Jari Maenpaa from Ensiferum/Wintersun up there as well). I actually used to have one of Loomis' Schecter 7 string models (killer guitar actually, I keep looking for a used one to pick back up). I have never heard a better 7 string riffer, and his lead playing is not only insane technique, but amazing phrasing and melodic sense. And he's 100% self-taught, which is hardly unheard of for guitar players, but at the depth of technique he has, it's crazy impressive. One of my biggest regrets...Symphony X and Nevermore were supposed to tour together in 2011, this was the dream show for me (Romeo and Loomis in the same evening? are you kidding me?) I was scheduled to see their NYC show at the Best Buy Theatre. Less than 2 weeks before the show, Nevermore cancels. And then shortly after announced their breakup or whatever you want to call it. And of course the reunion never happened and Warrel passed away. Prior to that, one of my favorite combinations in Nevermore was Loomis with Chris Broderick, such an insane amount of talent there. Yeah, I hate the Arch Enemy thing even though I'm sure it's a good paycheck. But he needs to strap the 7 string back on and give us another solo album at a minimum!

Ha! Great minds and some such. I'd love to get myself a 7-string one of these days. I'd love to be able to go heavier. I agree on Loomis having a great melodic sense. His playing is heavy but not overwhelming to listen to.
That would have been one great show. What a shame. And yes, RIP Warrel.
I also assumed it was doing the guy a solid, giving a friend and well known dude in the business a solid gig. I get it. It's just a missed opportunity.
And yes, Loomis and Broderick in one band is almost too much shred talent to go in one place. Almost.

I'd love to get myself a 7-string one of these days. I've tried a number of times (I've owned a handful and sold them all). With the Loomis model, I had the goal of learning Narcosynthesis. And yet somehow 10 minutes later I found myself playing Korn's Blind. I doubt I'll ever get the full feel for one, and yet I'm sure I'll buy another one at some point and start the whole cycle over again haha.

Not only are we on the same guitarist wavelength today, but the same song and album. That is a great song, and Dead Heart in a Dead World is by far my favorite album of theirs. I discovered this around the time I realized I wanted to get into heavier stuff, but I like the "thrashy" rhythmic framing. I find I get somewhat bored with a lot of trad and power metal that stays at the same fast-but-not-blistering temp the whole time. It's part of what I never gelled much with Maiden. I like having the groove and timing I associated with thrash in music, and to my ear, this album of theirs has the most of that. Not just samey tempos, either fast or slow.

I'm only seeing empty space on driver1980's posts. Dragging my mouse over the blank space doesn't highlight anything hidden, but if I quote one of these posts, I see a Twitter placeholder. Is it just me?
