After reading a post about Stan Lee’s hipness, it made me think who is hip in 2023? Zdarsky, Bendis? With this said most recent thing I read was Human Target by Tom King and the first 6 issues of Ryan Clark. Neither would I describe as hip but both were good storytelling.

The Ed Piskor/Tom Scioli/Jim Rugg Pittsburgh triumvirate of artists seem to be pretty with it

Bendis hasn't been hip for at least 10 years. Mark Russell? Phillip Kennedy Johnson? Si Spurrier?

Tom King appears to be the hip flavor of the day.
Within the context of Big Two comics.

Man, every writer named on this thread... I would not consider them hip... pandering, narcissistic, character ruiners, maybe, but not hip.
The Cartoonist Kayfabe guys... they are maybe hip. They at least strive to do things in a fresh and different way.

I don't know about "hip" writers; the word "hip" is itself not very hip anyway. Artists with buzz at present include: Peach Momoko Sean Gordon Murphy Tradd Moore J.H. Williams III Daniel Warren Johnson Nick Pitarra Nicola Scott

I was thinking writers, but agree with you artist choices... Momoko Scott and Johnson would have been the ones I would have said.

I'm not a "hep cat" as Aunt May would say in this modern world by any means, but what little I can contribute: Agree Brian Michael Bendis is kind of old news at this point. I did like him when he moved from Powers to kicking off New Avengers (nearly 20 years ago now, wow!), he was fun even if his "smooth talking" dialogue was a little silly at times. Those early issues with David Finch on art were really fun (sadly I don't see Finch doing much in comics these days?). I REALLY want to enjoy Scioli more, and did a bit actually back in the day with his Godland material. I want to like some of his more modern material, but rather than that "Allred style" simplified magic that somehow works, I feel like his style pushes it one step too far and looks like a bit of scribble to me at times. Tom King I had a bad initial bout with trying to read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Did not feel like Supergirl even remotely (which is too bad because I kind of liked the general idea of the story). Maybe I need to give him another chance and read some more though if he's well-regarded overall. Being a more casual reader of modern comics, it's more like I catch bits here and there, but I did notice artist Carlos Magno from the Kang mini-series in 2021. Not sure if he's on the "cool in 2023" list, but thought his stuff looked pretty good! A couple of pages from the series below, followed by a couple of neat looking commissions:

I like Tom King, but his readers can't be too attached to previous characterizations of anyone; sometimes he uses the characters he's given to tell the stories he wants to tell, like "What if Red Sonja were Supergirl?"

I just read his Human Target and it was OK, but didn't think it was anything special. It certainly felt longer (and wordier) than it had to be. I gotta say, though, the artwork was excellent--often beautiful--and one of the best uses of color I've seen. But, like a lot of modern comics, illustrates the text but doesn't add much in terms of narrative or character.

I still think Stan Lee is hip even though it's 2023.
