"Jughead, I want you to court/woo me"
Translated for the era. An unfortunate wording in the more modern context.

"Jughead, I want you to court/woo me" Translated for the era. An unfortunate wording in the more modern context. It's more fun the other way.

Explain this When people are shocked, hats and other headwear fly off their head. Basic science.

Not to mention that Archie art of the day was superior and fabulous....
Don't tell Dan De Carlo I said that....

While I like DeCarlo's work, esp. his output from the '50s through the mid-'70s, my two very favorite Archie artists by far are Lucey and Samm Schwartz.

A lot may have to do with what we grow up with, but I find early to mid-50s Archie style I a bit of the uncanny valley, and enjoy the more stylized post-DeCarlo style a lot more -- and funnier in terms of how the jokes land. Some of that may also be a function of how effectively folks like Lucey and Schwartz stage the gags.

Explain this Many forget that early Archie comics had Betty romantically pursuing Jughead. I always believed Jughead and Betty would've made a good couple, as both were more level-headed and genuine personalities than their best friends.

"Jughead, I want you to court/woo me" Translated for the era. An unfortunate wording in the more modern context. Yep. This is a great example of the way word usage changes over time.

Yep. This is a great example of the way word usage changes over time. Like the Flintstones having a gay old time... My father, who was born in 1946, came "this" close to being named Gaylord by his mother. Which illustrates just how unlinked to homosexuality the word "gay" was back then. As it was, my Dad was named Avery, which is a very American name and extremely unusual over here in the UK. Apparently there was a guy at the U.S. 8th Army Air Force base near our town who my Nan was friendly with during World War II with that name and she just liked the sound of it.

Like "iconic" which is fast coming to mean "really cool" or "infamous" or "emblematic". Like you, that's a change that irritates me no end due to its over-usage.
