Fifty two hours ago, George came up with an idea for an episode while we are still trying to make our originally planned next episode happen. I can't believe we discussed, planned, recorded, and edited this thing in such record time! Meanwhile, our originally planned episode--full of meticulous research and worthwhile history--is still moving along, but coordinating recording time among George, myself, and our special guest has taken longer than expected. We should have it ready to go for December. In the meantime, enjoy this discussion of our favorite holiday classic comic stories! Listen on Podbeanor watch on Youtube

I'm listening to it right now, and it's a lot of fun! We need more of George's lyrical performances!
The theme of Christmas as a moment where we can celebrate peace for a brief moment reminds me of a line in the Howard the Duck magazine (written by Bill Mantlo). Someone (I forget who) comments that Christmas and its whole Peace on Earth is a lot of crock, because the next day we're all back to hating each other... and Howard replies that with a species like mankind, one night out of 365 isn't such a bad average. It's a bit cynical, but I must agree with him!
--------------
That story were Superman is asked to cure a dad's cancer turned out to be ghoulishly hilarious!
"Superman, WHY didn't you save my dad? You can do anything! I wrote you last spring! Why were you so late showing up?"
"Truth is, kid, I only read my mail once a year... "
--------------
Silent night, deadly night...
Batman is something of a d*** in this one, with his whole "you may have saved this man's life but you must pay for what you've done before". I mean, it's not as if Batman himself is not guilty of several crimes, usually involving battery.
--------------
X-Men #98 is a bittersweet issue for me as a fan, because it was the last time Scott and Jean could be happy together without a ton of convoluted and guilt-ridden continuity weighing down on them. After that evening, either Jean wasn't herself but actually the Phoenix, or Scott was crippled by the memory of the whole "I'm dumping my family so Marvel can sell X-Factor comics" debacle.
--------------
Has Alan Brennert ever written a bad story? I don't think so. What a talent.

You are so right. In fact, I didn't realize it until I read your words just now, but a lot of what I love about that issue in hindsight is its innocence: the X-Men unhampered by years of continuity and trauma that were just around the corner.

(...) Has Alan Brennert ever written a bad story? I don't think so. What a talent. No. And that extends to his (non-comics) prose.

Hah! George called them funnybooks. I'm rubbing off on him. So much Superman. Jeff needs to read Alan Brennert's oeuvre. It's not a lot so it won't take long. Hitman...good call. Disney did great Christmas stories, in general, but Christmas For Shacktown is next level.

Stupid spell robot, I meant the Christmas stories. Ah, gotcha. Walt Disney's Christmas Parade (2003) #1-5, as well as any old reprint of Christmas for Shacktown and Christmas on Bear Mountain. There are at least three other iterations of WDCP, and each mostly reprints stories from the original volume (with a few other stories thrown in), but I find the 2003 volume offers the most quality per issue.
