Alas the days of ordering log cabins and potato guns are long past use but it doesn't mean we can't celebrate them. Over in the Community area, the fun "Random List" thread, I posted this one up yesterday but it felt like it needed to placed here as well. We all loved them as kids and I'm sure some of us ordered stuff from them. (taken from my post on "Random List" ) Favorite Comic Book Advertisements
I'm not using any Super Hero adverts to sell comics or buy comic related items, this is just adverts for other junk.... 1. Sea Monkeys cdn0.theawl.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/BestSeaMonkAdPic-e1309271648169.jpeg 2. 204 piece Revolutionary Soldiers farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/4703787364_dc639a978a_b.jpg (great Russ Heath art!) 3. 132 piece Roman Soldiers www.ancientromerefocused.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/roman_soldiers_lg1.jpg(more great Russ Heath art) 4. 100 piece Army Soliders mailhiot.com/wp/wp-content/gallery/comic-ads/100-soldiers.jpg 5. Spalding Basketballs starring Julius Irving and Rick Barry blogintomystery.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/spalding.jpg (Jack Davis art) 6. Charles Atlas media.comicbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/atlas.jpg 7. Count Dante thesearchforcountdante.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/1975DetectiveComics450Dante.jpg 8. Cash or Prizes ifanboy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/prizesorcash.jpg 9. Giant Sized Monsters! cdn.comixology.com/assets/monsters.jpg 10. X-Ray Specs themrsite.com/blog//wp-content/uploads/2013/05/xRayGlasses.jpg I'd figure I'd open it up to everyone to talk about their favorite ads in the comics; if you of any artists that worked on them or pieces they did, or just post your favorites. -R

This ad, and others like it, mesmerized me.

I loved the Rick Barry/Julius Erving one!
One I had never seen before (and perhaps isn't anywhere else), was an advert in Wierd Western Tales for the new(at the time) Rolling Stones album ,Black and Blue, complete with a drawn picture of the band.. very cool.
I think the Hostess ones transend mere advertisements.

Here's my favorite Hostess ad:
It's the first time I ever saw the Abomination or Wendigo. And since I didn't know which was which, I assumed the white, furry one was the Abomination because it was a play on "the Abominable Snowman." That's logical, isn't it?
I wasn't in the dark for very long because the Abomination was in Incredible Hulk #195 just a month or two after the ad appeared.

Did you guys see the the recent ads that were a comic? I think they were for Harley (not sure, some kinda motorcycle).. they had heroes riding the motor cycle fight the wrecking crew, then Loki turns up and saves them or something.. it was a 6 part thing over 6 months in Marvel on the back page. Not quite sure they're the same level as the Hostess ones, though.

How did the Hostes ads not make this list? If you read my caveat on the list, I didn't use Superheros, I wanted showcase the other ads. Seanbaby.com has all of the Hostess ads up. But now we can talk about them

I want to see weird stuff like potato guns, book safes and the like.... Although the Warren magazines had the coolest adverts. You can get movies, masks and all sorts of craziness...

Current Marvel issues are running some very retro-looking Charles Atlas ads, complete with the little comic strip of the guy getting revenge after bulking up. As a lifelong practitioner of martial arts, I was always amused by the Karate/Kung Fu instructional courses they sold in comic books. Totally banking on people's ignorance of martial arts by using exotic-sounding techniques and promises of superhuman fighting skills. Another ad I really liked was the Captain "O" sales club ads.

How did the Hostes ads not make this list? If you read my caveat on the list, I didn't use Superheros I did read your caveat, but didn't assume "comics or buy comic related items" included Twinkies. Just wanted to make sure you hadn't dismissed the finest ads ever to grace the comic book pages.

I would love to see a collected hardcover (and it deserves to hardcover) of all the Hostess advertisments...Marvel and DC. Also, I'd love to own some of the original artwork for one of them....
