Ditko Shrugged: The Uncompromising Life of the Artist Behind Spider-Man Hardcover – July 7, 2020
by David Currie (Author), Daniel Herman (Editor), Steve Ditko (Artist) Hardcover $47.45
Steve Ditko was the last of a sturdy generation of American comic book artists who produced iconic, modern day mythology and was among the most influential and original creators of the 20th Century. A prime architect, together with Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, of a universe of heroic characters that took Marvel Comics from an underdog New York publisher in the 1960s to the world-recognized brand of comic book superheroes and multi-million-dollar movies of today, Ditko co-created Spider-Man but walked away from the character he designed over 50 years ago, to never again return to the enduring superhero and retreating completely from the public eye thereafter. Seeking his own individualistic paths for creative and personal expression would lead to condemnation from some, restricted work opportunities from others and a reclusive life peppered with memories of interfering editors; original artwork that had been stolen from him and a life-long adherence to his Objectivist convictions. With the book sourcing a decade-long correspondence between Steve Ditko and its author David Currie, the history of the formative years of American comic books and the rise of Marvel Comics is revealed, illuminated further by interviews with many other comic book creators from all periods. It's an intrigue-filled story of heroes and villains, both fictional and real; visionary artists on zero-hour contracts and one man's artistically productive and diligently uncompromising life.
The Stringbags Paperback – May 20, 2020
by Garth Ennis (Author), P. J. Holden (Drawings) Paperback $28.62
Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy began World War II with torpedo bombers that could devastate enemy warships and merchantmen at will. Britain's Royal Navy squadrons went to war equipped with the Fairey Swordfish.
A biplane torpedo bomber in an age of monoplanes, the Swordfish was underpowered and under-gunned; an obsolete museum piece, an embarrassment. Its crews fully expected to be shot from the skies. Instead, they flew the ancient "Stringbag" into legend.
Writer Garth Ennis and artist PJ Holden present the story of the men who crewed the Swordfish: from their triumphs against the Italian Fleet at Taranto and the mighty German battleship Bismarck in the Atlantic, to the deadly challenge of the Channel Dash in the bleak winter waters of their homeland. They lived as they flew, without a second to lose--and the greatest tributes to their courage would come from the enemy who strove to kill them.
Based on the true story of the Royal Navy's Swordfish crews, The Stringbags is an epic tale of young men facing death in an aircraft almost out of time.

Same here as i too though Marvel would publish another trade around movie time. I have the monthly originals bought off the shelf (well read and loved) so having a nice all-in-one TPB will be quite good. Didn't they come out with one not that long ago - within the last two or three years? But yeah, you'd think they might re-release it or package a new collection for the movie. OTOH, the movie looks to deviate so sharply from the comics that it might be possible they decided there was no point. Also - and perhaps MRP could chime in on this, as he's knowledgable about the industry side of things - I read somewhere recently that the movie side is so completely divorced from, and one might say "above", the comics division of the same parent company that the comics people, even the execs and so on, don't know any more about what the movie guys are planning than we fans and readers do: they just have to read the entertainment news, same as us. I find that hilarious, if it's really true.
I am not sure of the details, but the recent restructuring of the Marvel Studios left Kevin Feige in charge of all media, including comics now, so Cebulski (EiC) and Buckler (publisher) report to him now, not Ike (who was the issue and the centerpoint of all the divisiveness within the various realms of Marvel), and Marvel Television was dissolved/subsumed into Marvel Studios as well, so the comic side reports to the movie side now, but I have no clue how much input Feige actually has as to what gets published or the direction or nature of the content. There is no longer a council of comic guys acting as advisers to Marvel Studios, but that's been true for a while now, and that council didn't have a very good track record as most of the missteps Marvel Studios made lied at their feet when they disagreed with Feige and insisted on having things their way, so that's not necessarily a negative thing. However as thorough and effective as Feige has been as an executive, I am sure the comics division knows what it needs to know to plan their publishing slate even if they have little input into what the movie division is planning. -M

There was an Omnibus in 2006 and then 2 TPB's in 2008 and all 3 are outrageously over priced for used copies. So this is a quick chance for those who love Kirby and Eternals to grab em' up more affordably. Marvel does not keep things in print. They have no evergreen sellers like DC does. They set print runs to sell through and if there don't, they blow out what's left at the end of the year to Diamond (and others like Ollie's) so they do not have to pay to warehouse them. If something comes up that they need to make things available again, they will either go back to press or put it out in a different format (getting the benefit of duplicate sales to completists who buy things in every format as well as selling to new consumers). Things like omnibuses get new printings, but other things get new formats (deluxe oversized hc vs. older hardcover edition for example) when they need to make older material available again (like say Eternals for the upcoming movie). It's not that they are scrambling to catch up as movies are announced, they just do not keep anything in print under any circumstances as they do not want to get stuck with unsold copies and have to warehouse them, so print runs are pretty low whenever they publish older material in collected editions, and the print run is usually set by how much Amazon order + how much is preodered through Diamond plus a variable x-factor of how much they might move in the rest of the book trade (B&N, other brick and mortar booksellers, etc.). And that variable is usually a very conservative guess. Anything that doesn't sell form that quantity is usually offered to Amazon if they need reorders and then remaindered out in some fashion. -M

On Amazon for pre-order: Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta Hardcover – May 19, 2020 . Hardcover: $37.33 120 pages
Discover, or return to, the world's greatest heroic fantasy artist, Frank Frazetta in this landmark art collection entitled, Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta. The New York Times said, "Frazetta helped define fantasy heroes like Conan, Tarzan and John Carter of Mars with signature images of strikingly fierce, hard-bodied heroes and bosomy, callipygian damsels" Frazetta took the sex and violence of the pulp fiction of his youth and added even more action, fantasy and potency, but rendered with a panache seldom seen outside of major works of Fine Art. Despite his fantastic subject matter, the quality of Frazetta’s work has not only drawn comparisons to the most brilliant of illustrators, Maxfield Parrish, Frederic Remington, Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth but, even to the most brilliant of fine artists including Rembrandt and Michelangelo and, major Frazetta works sell for millions of dollars, breaking numerous records.
This innovator’s work has not only inspired generations of artists, but also movies and directors including the Conan films, John Carter of Mars, the sensationally successful Lord of the Rings trilogy, Robert Rodriguez’ films including From Dusk Till Dawn, Ralph Bakshi films, the epic, award-winning Game of Thrones series, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, Disney’s animated Tarzan films, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and George Lucas’ Star Wars series. The Forbes magazine article Schwarzenegger's Sargent led with the line, "Which artist helped make Arnold governor? Frank Frazetta, the Rembrandt of barbarians."
J. David Spurlock started crafting this book by reviving the original million-selling 1970s mass market art book, Fantastic Art of Frank Frazetta. But, he expanded and revised to include twice as many images and, presents them at a much larger coffee-table book size of 10.5 x 14.625”! The collection is brimming with both classic and previously unpublished works of the subjects Frazetta is best remembered for including barbarians, beasts, and buxom beauties. Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin said, “Though he bears only a passing resemblance to the Cimmerian as Robert E. Howard described him, Frazetta’s covers of the Conan paperback collections became the definitive picture of the character… still is.” Schwarzenegger said, “I have not been intimidated that often in my life. But when I looked at Frazetta’s paintings, I tell you, it was intimidating.” Game of Thrones, Conan and Aquaman film star Jason Momoa said, “I am a huge Frank Frazetta fan. Both of my parents are painters, so I'd known Frazetta's paintings, that's what I wanted to bring to life.” See the revolutionary art that helped inspire Schwarzenegger, Momoa, the Lord of the Rings films and Game of Thrones: FRAZETTA!

Atlas at War! by Michael J. Vassallo (Editor). $56.76 Hardcover. Atlas at War! collects fifty hard-hitting stories from Atlas Comics, the company that became Marvel Comics and published more war titles than anyone in the industry between the years 1951 and 1960. Comics historian Dr. Michael J. Vassallo has chosen the best of the best, many of which are coming back into print for the first time, from sixteen different Atlas war titles and featuring the artwork of twenty different artists—giants of the genre, including Russ Heath, John Severin, Bernie Krigstein, Joe Maneely, Jerry Robinson, Steve Ditko, and Jack Kirby. Each page has been meticulously restored from its first printing by comic art restorer Allan Harvey. Atlas at War! covers the brutal pre-code period where graphic depictions of war action were rendered by artists who were World War II veterans themselves, as well as the post-code period, where code restrictions forced creators to tell stories without graphic violence but produced some of the most beautiful comic art of the genre. In addition to the artists, stories cover all aspects of war—from famous campaigns, weaponry, and personal soldier stories to political topics, Nazi atrocities, and even one story tinged with pre-code horror! Often overlooked in favor of its competitors, Atlas at War! will finally show that Atlas’ war titles were second to no one.
