In the preview for Red Sonja #14, we have a blond Argossean girl swearing by Crom.
Which makes me want to swear by Crom.

I read the first TPB of East Of West. I like Hickman's work for the most part, but I think this was a miss for me. In media res is fine, but it felt like the narrative was just not well-defined at all.

I have just read Original Sin 0-3 , the mini series from Marvel from last year. What a bad comic series. What happened to Deodato? It's real work trying to see what he's trying to show in each page. All the figures are in the Dark.

Is Deodato the guy that did Ellis's Thunderbolts?

Maybe she went on an exchange trip to Cimmeria when she was in high school. I forget what Argos was supposed to be like in Howard's world - sounds like it should be inspired by ancient Greece, but I don't think it was depicted that way in the comics, was it? Did REH come up with any Greek-sounding gods for the Argosseans (is that what he called them BTW?), as he did with the Stygians and their Egyptian-sounding Set?

Yeah, like Earl said, each issue is a a snapshot of a different world/universe within the DC Multiverse, and some of them feel a bit sketchy. The last issue, Thunderworld (Marvel Family), was probably the one that worked best as a complete story on its own. I suspect the Pax Americana one does too, but I still haven't got my head around it. There isn't any obvious forward momentum at this point, but I would say that after 5 issues, or however many it's been, a cumulative effect is beginning to make itself felt: not so much as a continuing story, but as the same story manifesting itself in different ways throughout the multiverse. I think it'll read much better as a completed work than as a serial, and if I had my time back probably I'd wait for the trade, but now I've come this far I'll most likely continue buying the individual instalments. After some scepticism about the whole project in the beginning - I don't share Morrison's love for the DCU and its big iconic characters, and lost a lot of interest once I learned the New Gods weren't going to play a part - I find myself looking forward to each new issue more and more. I got the first issue, and I really loved it and then I got the second pulp inspired one and it was fun but there wasn't much there connecting it to the first issue and some of the future solicits didn't sound like my thing so I decided I wouldn't miss anything by skipping around so I picked up Thunderworld which was probably one of my favorite books of 2014 and the sort of lampooning of the Guide to the DCU sounds fun so I'll probably get that but I'll probably skip the Mastermen issue and I'm still deciding on the Ultracomics one as it takes place "here" on Earth-33 and by the solicit it almost sounds like it could be some kind of choose your own adventure book. I think there is a serious problem with the underlying idea of the Mastermen issue, but I'll wait till I read the issue before talking about it, if I do so at all.

I'm trying to remember the last time Astro City was my third favorite comic of the week. It was great as usual, but Star Wars #1 and Jupiter's Legacy #5 were just a little bit better.
Maybe one of the Dark Age issues...

Did REH come up with any Greek-sounding gods for the Argosseans (is that what he called them BTW?), as he did with the Stygians and their Egyptian-sounding Set? One of my pet peeves about comics inspired by REH is when names of places and deities are used randomly. The man put a lot of effort in creating a coherent make-believe universe, and it's treated with the same respect shown to Greek myths in modern videogames. Argos was a pretty typical Hyborian country, and Marvel showed it as your standard John Buscema medieval society. The only Hyborian country shown some individuality at Marvel was Zingara, based roughly on mid 1500s Spain (and Zingara was only partly Hyborian). Argosseans worshipped Mitra like most Hyborians; I suppose that some Shemite cults (especially any associated with the sea) might also have been present there. It is in more eastern Hyborian countries that foreign cults had the most success competing with Mitraism; in Khoraja, for example (Khoraja was founded by Kothians), Mitraism was still present but had been mostly replaced by the more sensuous cult of Ishtar. Mitra was a peaceful and disembodied Unique God that did not accept human sacrifices, but his clergy was not all that tolerant; it took an edict by King Conan to keep Mitraists from persecuting the followers of Asura in Aquilonia. (Mitraists accused Asurans of all sorts of infamies, including cannibalism). There's a clear parallel with the medieval Catholic church, as it was in medieval western Europe.

I have spent the last few days slowly shrinking down my backlog of current comics. And I must say: overall, I have been pretty pleased with Amazing X-Men. It's been a pretty fun and solid book, imo, so far. I loved the Nightcrawler arc, the Alpha Flight arc, and through that Axis event (which I did not read, only read it from the three x-books I actually pull) they managed to make an interesting (to me) book. I have not read #15 just yet, but I like how the books have had a different focus (when not in the middle of a story arc) each issue. And I am still sad that X-Factor will be over with issue #20.

In media res is fine, but it felt like the narrative was just not well-defined at all. I've lost track of how many issues of this we've had now - 10? 15? - but it's just not grabbing me at all. Just feels like it's taking an absolute age to get pretty much nowhere. It doesn't help that I'm not enamoured of the art, either. I feel pretty much the same about God is Dead as well - just seems to have gone around in circles for ages, and I lost interest 6 or more issues ago.

Just quoting ths because, well, I love to see people hate Hickman On the Conan thing, I definitely got a Argos = Greece vibe from the usual characters that were from there.. they were often drawn as Greek in the comic. Funny that Aquilonia was given quite a few ancient Roman characteristics, but Argos was more generically Medieval European.

When it comes to Marvel, I avoid any of those three like the plague. Which means, well, I'm reading a total of two x-books, and once All New Invaders ends, I will be reading ZERO Avengers-related books.
