So, the new "Secret Wars" event is going to fuse the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate one. Nothing will ever be the same again, deep-lasting changes, significant story blah blah blah.
Considering that the Ultimate universe has nothing to contribute to this fusion apart from Miles Morales and the actual Samuel Jackson Nick Fury, I don't quite see how this is going to play out. It's not as if there was a lot of continuity-fixing made possible by the idea.

I like Remender.. it's a little weird how the man obsesses about Apocalypse, but he's a decent writer, IMO. Bendis is Bendis. Every character he writes has the same personality, and it's HIS personality. He loves long scenes of characters just chatting, and he takes FOREVER to get anywhere... he does have his moments, though.
Hickman is just awful.
But don't worry, it sounds like the new Secret Wars is really 'Crisis: Marvel Edition', so come the summer we'll have..something else.

Remender's stories are so awful, Wildfire!!! Come on!!! Everyone goes through these horrible consequences that 99.9% of the time, they end up paying for with their lives. Gah. It's just dark and gross. I don't need it and I don't want it.

I find I like Marvel's Terrible Trio (Bendis, Hickman, Remender) much better when they are doing creator-owned stuff-Bendis'-Torso, Fire, Powers, United States of Murder Inc. etc. are great books, Remender's Fear Agents and Strange Girl are wonderful, and Hickman's Secret and Nightly News were good reads, but only Bendis has produced anything I remotely liked while working for Marvel (his DD and Ult. Spidey runs are decent).

(And DC has been gone since Flashpoint, so I'll have some extra money to buy other things). Anyone's picked up the lovely "Ring of the Nibelung" hardcover by P. Craig Russell?

It does sound like a pure marketing gimmick doesn't it: something meant to drum up a bit of publicity and fan-controversy, but completely pointless as far as the creative side of things is concerned.

As far as I've been able to find out, it's a single-volume, hardcover reprint of the 2-volume paperback edition I already have. Otherwise I'd be very tempted, depending on what extra material was in there. I used my Christmas present money to buy the Georg Solti cd box-set of Wagner's Ring cycle, so I'll probably re-read Russell's adaptation once I start getting into it.

I'm more of a Boulez guy, myself . (Just kidding. Boulez's version just happens to be the one we had at home. I probably listened to Solti's Parzival more often than any other opera). The Russell HC is indeed presenting the same material as the softcover. I was surprised to see the artist did not include his work published in Epic magazine #2, with Siegfried and Fafner; he just redrew the whole scene! Now that's dedication.

I read the first TPB of East Of West. I like Hickman's work for the most part, but I think this was a miss for me. In media res is fine, but it felt like the narrative was just not well-defined at all. I've lost track of how many issues of this we've had now - 10? 15? - but it's just not grabbing me at all. Just feels like it's taking an absolute age to get pretty much nowhere. It doesn't help that I'm not enamoured of the art, either. I feel pretty much the same about God is Dead as well - just seems to have gone around in circles for ages, and I lost interest 6 or more issues ago. Gotta say I've liked what little I've read of East of West, but God is Dead was terrible blah. Not bad but certainly not what I'd expect from Hickman.

I loved Bendis on DD. That's it, otherwise, I hate what he's done to Marvel.
I've liked what I've read of Hickman's FF and The Nightly News and Remender's Cap was good and I loved his Strange Girl.

It's just dark and gross. I don't need it and I don't want it. I liked the first, oh, half or so of his X-Force, and I've enjoyed Uncanny Avengers overall. You just have to read it as a 'What if' story... it's good in that context. Besides, it's not like any story has any sort of lasting effects, since every writer just does their own thing. Everyone that Remender killed off is back, after all.

I did, I think I posted about it on the 'what have you read lately' thread... very pretty book in a nice package. It wasn't like Earth-shatteringly good story wise or anything, but it was neat to see the German versions of the Norse characters.

I think Hickman, Bendis and Remender are just like any of the old 70s to the 90s writers that did a long box or two of comics, a few of them are ace and some of them are duff stuff they tossed off to meet a deadline.

Remender's Fear Agent is pretty cool. That is the series I liked by him the most.

Hickman only wrote the first 6 issues...
