If Marvel were really brave they would start over completely, right from the beginning with Peter being bitten by the spider, Banner getting irradiated, Cap being unfrozen, etc. Completely rebooting an entire superhero line and starting from square one has never been done. All three of DC's reboots have been partial, while The Ultimate line was very small in scale and was done with the intent of being subversive and modern. A company wide wiping of the slate and start from scratch is unheard of and would be an incredibly bold move providing the most perfect jumping on point possible (I can't think that theres no one at Disney who doesn't think this would help close the gap between comic sales and movie revenue). They'd never do that because it would also provide the perfect jumping off point too...and a lot of readers may very well take it. The trick is to reboot, have new issue #1s and such, to attract new readers (does that even work?), but leave things more or less as they are, so as to not alienate or upset the existing readership.

I think they're pretty well aware they aren't going to attract new readers, but putting a #1 on the cover is a proven sales tactic. I believe a HUGE chunk of their current consumer base are either speculators or at the very least the type to not miss a first issue, so while a Marvel reader who typically buys 8 Marvel books a month will likely buy all the #1's, going over budget that month, by issue two or three he will be back at his typical 8 books, or around there. I think that's their real goal, make the guy who only reads 8 Marvel comics pick up the entire line one month, and then stick to 12 for the rest of the year. More dollars from the same small pool of consumers.
Same as variant covers being a proven sales tactic. Maybe they aren't all sold to "investors," but they are typically all sold to someone who will buy the same thing twice (or 80 times) because the cover image is slightly different, and he has to have them ALL to keep his run complete.

I just wanted to say "thanks" to all of the folks who have been explaining and discussing the upcoming changes with Marvel's universe. As time has gone on, I have had decreasing interest in keeping up with new books, so I haven't been reading about what they are planning to do with their next big event.
I'm to the point now where I am down to just three current Marvel books (since All-New X-Factor ended yesterday) and might be down to two or even just one in the near future (not sure how much longer Moon Knight is going to last, and Superior Iron Man is not really an enjoyable read as they've made Tony too much of a dick, so I may drop it). This from a guy who used to buy upwards of 25 Marvel books per month, but it's not the cost; it's the fact I don't get as much enjoyment out of the new books, so I tend to either follow certain writers (PAD, Ellis) or specific characters (Captain America, Iron Man).
Maybe this new universe will energize both the product coming out of Marvel and my interest in it. Time will tell.

I was only quasi-following Silver Surfer and Savage Hulk (mainly because of getting to see Alan Davis tell a Hulk story) and I've had Daredevil and Thor God of Thunder on my "to read" list for awhile now. I'm not interested in events or giant crossovers and simply won't support them. Period. The books I'm really enjoying right now are Saga, Tooth & Claw, Ragnarok, Five Ghosts and The Sixth Gun, which are all creator owned series. It does seem that Marvel and DC are only for speculators and fanatics nowadays. A part of me wishes these people would go away, but if they did, Disney and WB would probably close up the comics division. I'm afraid that our only hope is digital.

I was kind of interested as I've said that really something of this level is what it would take to interest me in Marvel again, but, after reading Newsarama's countdown speculation on Battleworld, I realize I'm already lost and confused and, most importantly, don't care anymore.
I don't.
When Disney bought Marvel, I knew something like this would be coming.
Really, my Marvel has been next to nothing for about 10-15 years now. In the 90's when their product was SO bad and they were selling to speculators and crazy variant covers, the insides were crap. We few exceptions, like Marvels and PAD's Hulk, I bought almost no Marvel. When Quesada & Palmiotti came on with Marvel Knights, they started to get me back. Heroes Reborn too, but it didn't last.
I'm not interested in this mish mash at all. This is the final stroke and I'm fine with it as it's been a long time coming. I've heard all the hate over the years from fanboys who left after a. Crisis, b. Identity Crisis, and esp c. Nu52, but have never felt that way. I look at it more as a metamorphosis and roll with it, though some of the details are flawed.
Marvel has insulted me as a DC reader for years, as well as my loyalty and intelligence, and this is the last straw. If they produce stand alone, out of continuity stories with characters I recognize, there's a good chance I'd try that, but not Battleworld mish mash ever.
Good chance for me to continue filling in the gaps in my True Marvel collection, continue with DC, and support the great indie stuff out there like Image, Dark Horse, Valiant (a great cohesive superhero universe), Dynamite, Archie/Dark Circle, the return of Milestone Media, etc.
It may sound hypocritical of me to follow Convergence, but that's not cherry picking. It's the exact opposite : it's all in and fully integrating everything that's ever existed, i.e. imaginary stories, Elseworlds, different earths, characters, dimensions, aliens caging Golden Age Batman & Robin, etc, all in the super-megaverse of the largest tapestry. A universe where Shazam pre-FP exists, Captain Thunder and Thunderworld exists, and Shazam ! by Geof Johns & Gary Frank exists. Yeah, I have no problems with that at all.

I think it's quite likely that this is essentially a re-boot, but they won't really admit it. They'll be new #1s, and they'll be a new universe, but it won't be origin stories, it'll be just the next story.
We'll get what the new origins are either as flashbacks, zero issues (or maybe they'll do '-1' issues again), or something. Much like New 52, really. Hopefully they'll do it a bit better, but I'm sure the corporate types saw the New 52 sales bump and want it, thinking surely THEY will be able to sustain it.
Remember, when the Ultimate Universe came out, there were big rumors that the Main MU was done for... they didn't end up pulling the trigger. This time I think they do.

I checked out of the Marvel Universe in the sense of really caring around 2002. When Busiek's Avengers ended, and Byrne left in a huff off of X-Men: The Hidden Years, I just lost interest. The style of mainstream comics that Quesada was interested in pushing wasn't for me. I did return in 2007 for Planet Hulk and Annihilation, both of which I genuinely enjoyed, but I rarely found much else of interest.
Not to be a broken record, but this New Marvel Universe is going to appeal to me on the basis of whether or not Marvel is serious about changing their publishing strategies. Will we continue to get poorly conceived event after event? Will we get some exciting new talent to relive the rather tired likes of Bendis' and crew? Could Marvel possibly be smart enough to give the likes of PAD, Mark Waid and Kurt Busiek (if he's interested) the reigns for awhile and let Bendis & Co. take a back seat? I'll keep an eye on the situation, but it's going to take a lot of serious changes besides the pomp and flash of a Marvel Crisis event to make me care again.

When comics become unfun, that is when I stop reading them. I am mainly pissed that Marvel cancelled ANXF. And now Remender is writing Quicksilver in Uncanny Avengers. I wonder how long it'll be before Quicksilver experiences his pseudo-death in the book. Or before Wanda does yet another crazy thing to save the mutants.

The more I hear about Secret Wars, the crappier it sounds - very much in keeping with the originals. The last couple of months of new comics has really been a deluge of the uninteresting or just plain bad, which is leaving me pretty negative about the whole medium: Secret Wars has the potential to be a massive jumping off point for me, much as SW2 was decades ago.

I haven't read any new Marvel comics for a few years now, and this news pretty much eliminates any desire I might have had to come back. There are still tons of old material that I haven't read yet, so I will keep with that.

I think I picked a good year to take off from new comics. I will let the dust settle on stuff and pick and choose what ws worth reading in trade later on.... -M

If Amazing X-Men changes, like they claim EVERYTHING will be changing, then I'm out. No need for me to stick around for current Marvel books.

Having just read the preview for the new Uncanny Avengers #1… There's a new Counter-Earth, now? Not that I mind as I always liked the concept, but I thought the Beyonders had moved it away in the 80s (and a quick look on Wikipedia tells me it was destroyed by Thanos, then replaced by a new one, which was also destroyed by Thanos). Also, I hate the retcon of a retcon of a retcon that now makes Pietro and Wanda not being Magneto's children, and perhaps not even mutants. Odd that Wanda looks so much like Magda, Magneto's deceased wife… Odd that all the sentinels who met the pair over the years marked them as mutants… Odd that Pietro's and Magneto's hairline looks so similar (and that they both had prematurely white hair). Odd that Pietro was depowered by a spell that targeted mutants during M-Day, and that Cerebro can find him and his sister. Odd that I waste time over the concept that modern and supposedly .serious" comic-books should make sense!
