My two favorite things being published now are both by Robert Kirkman . The Walking Dead and Invincible. Honestly, these two books are the reason I still have a comics subscription... If you guys are fans of classic Spidey, Invincible is kind of a modern take. I've heard it described as Spider Man with Superman's powers. The author is really good at character interactions, and it has some of the best art in the industry. One of the best things about it is that Kirkman is a fan of classics comics, but he doesn't just retreat. He revisits many of the classic scenarios and tropes, but he always puts his own unique, fresh spin on it. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. I'm sure everyone knows about The Walking Dead. Best thing I can say about it is it's not a "zombie book." It's a psychological study on what prolonged, extreme, indefinite stress will do to a group of people over time. It's been fascinating to read, and I know it's cliche, but..."it's so much bette than the show." Another reader of both Invincible and Walking Dead right here. I purchased (and devoured) the first two compendiums of Invincible and have been getting the single issues ever since. Invincible really seems like Kirkman's love letter to superhero comics. And you're absolutely right about him visiting all the tropes of the genre -- parody is not the right word because the story can often get quite serious and/or dark, but it does have that feel of poking fun at some of the conventions of the superhero genre. From the Big Two, I'm reading: She-HulkSilver SurferDaredevilSpideyBatmanAction ComicsSuperman/Wonder WomanAnd I can't be the only one on this board reading Lazarus by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, am I??

The only new series I've been following are Saga and The Sixth Gun, but I'm a bit behind in both. I'm thinking of switching to reading them in trades instead of on Comixology. I tried Silver Surfer #1 by Dan Slott and Mike Allred and enjoyed it a lot. I'll be back for the next issue. I think reading series like Silver Surfer are the only way I can enjoy modern Marvel; no mention of events, the modern Avengers, Bendis, etc.
I've tried a few first issue Image Comics (since I love their anti-DRM stance and digital downloads) but I find that, given the prices, I'm extremely picky; a first issue will have to be pretty good for me to think about buying the next.

I only have had time to read Rai #1....I really liked it! The art was fantastic, and I thought Kindt did a great job setting up a future view of the Valiant Universe...Also, i'm really excited about the Valiant Handbook that's coming on FCBD....
Oh, and regarding Silver Surfer, I was thinking while reading the first issue it has a lot of similarities to Doctor Who, of which Slott is a big fan of....Did anyone else notice it?

I think Doctor Who is something I have to give a shot when I retire in 24 years. I have not watched a single episode. I am sure at that point, there will be a blu-cloud instant download into my visual cortex at an affordable rate from President Amazon.

I recommend Superior Foes of Spider-Man. One of the funniest books on the market. Second this. I only have had time to read Rai #1....I really liked it! The art was fantastic, and I thought Kindt did a great job setting up a future view of the Valiant Universe...Also, i'm really excited about the Valiant Handbook that's coming on FCBD.... This was the first new Valiant book I've read. I thought it was okay but I as not blown away by it. I agree the artwork was good. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it though. I've also been wanting to pick up Archer & Armstrong for awhile now. Oh, and regarding Silver Surfer, I was thinking while reading the first issue it has a lot of similarities to Doctor Who, of which Slott is a big fan of....Did anyone else notice it? Dawn in issue #2 really reminded me of Amy Pond in the episode "The Beast Below". From what I hear he's a huge fan. I actually wouldn't mind if he wrote a official Doctor Who comic.

Hey, ironchimp! Have you tried ordering it directly from Uncivilized Books? If they won't ship internationally, let me know. They're situated right here in Minneapolis. Tom Kaczynski, the publisher, drops off stock at the collective bookstore I help run, and he's co-publishing a book this year with 2D Cloud, who I do sales & fulfillment work for. I could get the books from Tom and then ship them through 2D Cloud. what other small press publishers can you recommend aaron? i am sure there would be a market no matter how small in UK for stuff like Uncivilized and other US / Euro small press - i'd be tempted to do it myself but we do have www.page45.com which has a good selection.

My pull list these days consists of the following: Archie Afterlife with Archie Life with Archie Betty and Veronica Hawkeye Astro City Saga And... that's it. Life with Archie is ending, which will drop me down to six titles. Which is actually where I am at currently, as I just started reading Saga and they are on hiatus. So Saga will basically replace Life with Archie on my pull list. I have no interest any longer in either the DC or Marvel universes, sad to say. Hawkeye is very good, but when it ends, I don't see myself picking up anything else from Marvel unless it is also more or less self contained and by creators I really like. I also buy stuff from Archie's recently relaunched Red Circle line. At the moment they aren't publishing anything, as they have a new guy in charge of Red Circle who is planning out the direction of the line or something. But when they get around to it, I will likely be buying that stuff as well. New Crusaders was very good, but for some reason they scuttled the follow up mini series, which was supposed to come out last year. The Fox had some excellent art, but the story was just okay at best for me. The two titles did re-establish the Red Circle universe with a new status quo, though, so it's a good foundation. Curious to see what they do with it all. Ms. Marvel is looking like it would very nicely fit that description .... Based on your love of Archie , I think you'd like it... The trade is probably a few months away, but give it a shot

If you do Amazon Prime the first 6 or 7 'modern' seasons are on there for free. To be on topic , I'm hoping for good things from Titan with their acquiring the Dr Who license. Ewing is a great writer , and seems well suited.

After cutting ties with my comics supplier back in 2010, I stopped collecting for a couple of years. Last May I restarted with Spider-Man. Now that I'm finished, I'll move onto the Hulk, but for the time being it's just TASM.

what other small press publishers can you recommend aaron? In addition to Uncivilized and 2D Cloud, I like: - Retrofit - Oily Comics - Study Group - Secret Acres I feel like I'm forgetting some. I also really like Copra, self-published by Michel Fiffe, which is a great homage to Ostrander's Suicide Squad, and Cartozia Tales, which is an all-ages fantasy comic about maps.

Yeah, it's not satire. It's putting his own spin on the tropes. It feels fresh and like an homage at the same time. Invincible is a slow-burn book, too. It starts off interesting but kind of slow, and slowly build until the stuff just hits the fan and it EXPLODES.

I just remembered that I am a member of www.unstablemolecules.com as well, the messageboard associated with the X-Men fan site uncannyxmen.net/ - I joned a year and a half ago when I started dating my current boyfriend, who is one of the founders of the site. If anyone wants to discuss current mutant books in detail, it's a smallish community but very knowledgeable - and not quite as "special" as much of the CBR X-Boards crowd.

It's not accidental. Slott openly admitted on his Twitter feed that his take on Surfer is influenced by his love of Doctor Who. I know that some people are not happy with it because it seems different from previous stories, but personally I love it. I LOL'ed at the two-page spread of the Impericon... can't believe someone actually drew that.
