Good lord Wonder Man had some horrible costumes. My aforementioned 1991 series costume almost looks like a masterpiece compared to those. (And again it probably doesn't help that I really enjoyed that short series.) The safari jacket costume wouldn't be so offensive if it weren't for it being that bright of a red. Looking at the picture reminded me of the Inspector Gadget cartoon I watched as a kid. Not sure why. Maybe it looks more like a badly colored rain/trench coat. Wonder Man circa 1991 by Jeff Johnson

Totally appropriate for meeting with the president. I always thought that it was nice that somewhere in the next 1000 years the prudes would die out and people would no longer demonize sexuality. Who's demonizing? The costumes are ugly and impractical for anything but posing. And come on, If Cosmic Boy is no prude, why are his nipples encased in that shell? he should let his areolar freak flags fly!

Pip, I knew you weren't saying we were. I just think the outfits are ugly.

Pip, I knew you weren't saying we were. I just think the outfits are ugly. And I am sure people from the renaissance would consider the mini skirt ugly.

The worst Legionaire Costume Ever ... I don't know, I really like the totally outlandish disregard for traditional superhero looks that this costume entails. Its weirdness and impracticality gives it a very exotic feel, which is appropriate for the XXXth century. Any costume that makes us go "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?" in LoSH is doing a good job in my book. (Giffen got the same effect with the strange neo-Louis XIV duds worn by civilian characters during the Five Years Gap).

I always wished that the Legion of Superheroes had dynamic costumes. Surely 1000 years in the future, we're going to have animated fabrics that will adapt to our very moods and circumstances.

One redesign I've always disliked is Wonder Man's safari jacket. I think it looks totally out of place in a superhero comics, where all the other characters are wearing the traditionally colourful skin-tight costumes. Who came up with that idea, I wonder? ... Perez had this to say about Wondy's fabled safari jacket (this is from an interview printed in Modern Masters Volume:George Perez, TwoMorrows, 2003): "I got to give him the safari jacket. That was a costume that didn't seem offensive at the time. Now [2003] it looks a little out of date, but it didn't look out of date back then. The idea I was going for--and I don't know if it was my idea or the writer's suggestion--was a Doc Savage type of approach to the character, where he wouldn't look quite as super-heroic with the spandex and everything. I consciously avoided giving him jodphurs--I couldn't go that far into Doc Savage territory. Just trying to make him the reluctant super-hero."

I was going to post earlier that it would look fine to me - if he was a Doc Savage style pulp hero with all that that entails. But as a post-Superman superhero it's jarring, to my eyes.

It's not controversial to suggest that those shiny, metallic get-ups are pretty awful. That is what you meant, right?

I'm glad there was a surgeon around to fix that in a hurry. I've been known to literally blow quite a few tops, and no surgeons were required (one of them was an opthalmologist , though).
