The whole, convoluted mess that was the '90s Spider-Man Clone Saga Okay. Now I know that your pulling my leg. Right? Actually, I quite liked a lot of the Clone Saga, too. I still miss Ben Reilly.

Okay. Now I know that your pulling my leg. Right? Actually, I quite liked a lot of the Clone Saga, too. I still miss Ben Reilly. I liked 'Blood Brothers'. I thought Cell-12 was a cool one-shot villain team, and I really dug the brutal fight between Ben and the cyborg Hobgoblin. I loved the Spidey costume re-design that Ben wore, too.

The whole, convoluted mess that was the '90s Spider-Man Clone Saga Okay. Now I know that your pulling my leg. Right? Ha! No, not at all, I'm afraid. Yes it was a train wreck, as far as the plotting (mostly due to all the behind the scenes shenanigans) and I'll even accept that the basic premise of replacing Peter Parker with Ben Riley was such a stupid one that it bordered on lunacy (although Ben became a really interesting character in his own right). But, for all its faults and its tangled, meandering, never ending ways, I really enjoy it. It is very much of its time, in terms of art, but the central story is pretty gripping, with Peter Parker really being put through the wringer emotionally -- I'm talking about the return of his parents, the death of Aunt May, the "Trial of Peter Parker", and the loss of Peter and MJ's baby at the end. Powerful stuff! Plus, all the cloning and clone decaying lends the story a very creepy, B-movie edge. So yeah, I like it. It's a bit of a mess, but it's sprawling, unfocused nature is one of its charms, I think. One thing I will say though is that I didn't read it at the time. I read it in the early 2000s and that may have influenced my reaction to it, since I knew ahead of time that everything would work out all right. I can imagine the "nerd rage" that being told in 1994 that the Peter Parker you've been reading about since 1974 is an impostor must've caused.

I think the Cerebus story arc collected in Reads is brilliant, including the controversial prose tale about a writer who falls victim to his own success... and to his own indulgence. I don't view it as an anti-feminist screed at all, but rather as a warning to creators who become enslaved by the worldly comforts they can afford if they sell out.
As Bane said: "Victory has defeated you".

As I've said before I love the 90's Clone Saga in all its convoluted glory.
Amazing Spider-Man #400 is one of the best written Spidey books ever! Too bad it was undone. Still...the impact it had on me .

I really enjoyed when Englehart launched WCA along with the Vision/Scarlet Witch mini. I hadn't read much Marvel to that point (apart from Lee/Kirby and Lee/Ditko reprints, Miller's DD, and Byrne's X-Men) and appreciated the way Englehart could pretty naturally weave in exposition about Marvel history in situations and dialog (as opposed to the way Roy Thomas would shoehorn things in DC books).

On the hate list, I couldn't agree more about Schiff-era Batman and Detective!
I don't know if these are hated so much as ignored...
The George Papp-era Superboy
Tomahawk, every buckskin-clad, coonskin-capped moment (Someday, I may even do a thread on my frontier fetish)
Rip Hunter, Time Master
Marvel and DC Westerns, any title any time.
The Invaders (1970s version)
Green Arrow, the Backup Years (which sounds like the poor guy needed his Metamucil Arrow)
Silver Age World's Finest
The Evanier-Spiegle Blackhawk

The Invaders (1970s version) Who hated the Invaders? Granted the Frank Robbins art wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but the series was great. It gave us a Nazi vampire for crying out loud!

A lot of people hate (or do not appreciate) the "Super Sons" stories that ran through World's Finest Comics in the 1970's. Bob Haney/Dick Dillin, imaginary tales = pure fun! The Super Sons are hilarious!

The Super Sons are hilarious! I've got most of the Super Sons appearances and add more when I can find them cheap. Haney + bat-crap craziness = Super Sons.

But I hope Dan Bailey doesn't hear you. Robbins is his cup of strychnine. I'm not sure Mr. Robbins was a great fit for the Invaders either, though his work elsewhere proves his skill. And his art never detracted from the series, in my opinion, because there was enough crazy stuff going on to keep it fun.

Love might be too strong a word, but I did like the Marvel Knights Punisher mini-series in the 90s by Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegowski with art by Bernie Wrightson that introduced a certain supernatural element to the Punisher's mission-it's reviled by most Punisher fans but it's the only Punisher series I bought off the racks. Plus it's Wrightson.
