Well, what can you say about the first and arguably greatest team of heroes ever assembled that hasn't been said already? This is the Gold Standard, the yardstick by which all subsequent teams are measured. Their meetings, full of ceremony and formality, discussion and disagreement were a reflection of our own experiences in school clubs, team sports, and church leagues. They had a Charter and Rules of Conduct and Fair Play. They elected leaders, saluted former members, and honored their fallen. They were a community of people dedicated to a common cause. They were us. The Justice Society has long been my favorite among the super teams. They have many honorable and worthy descendants, but they have no equal. I'll leave it to Juggernaut to post appropriate artwork that speaks to the long, majestic history of the JSA. Instead, here is some mildly embarrassing OC featuring both Phil and Jill Maurice :

Phil MauricePhil, I just wanted to say this ... I was speechless when I saw this great, great picture of you and your wife dressing up as Black Canary and that's one of the coolest pictures that I ever saw. I just wanted to say this - thanks for posting it and I will be spending time on the Golden Age of the Justice Society after I have my coffee this morning. Thanks for your contributions ... this is one great costume of the Flash you have on!

Before we begin discussing the Golden Age of the Justice SocietyI want to make myself clear and this still bother me today and therefore I had a hard time accepting this decision from Wikipedia of which many of you here find it as unacceptable form of information of Super Heroes and this portion of All Star Comics back in those days really bothers me a lot. Here's the Wikipedia Information that I'm relating to in italic form. An in-house rule explicitly laid out on the last page of All Star Comics #5, reprinted on page 206 of All Star Comics Archives Vol. 1, required that whenever a member received his or her own title, that character would leave All Star Comics, becoming an "honorary member" of the JSA. Thus, the Flash was replaced by Johnny Thunder after #6, and Green Lantern left shortly thereafter for the same reason.
For this reason, Superman and Batman were established as already being "honorary" members prior to All Star Comics #3. How these two heroes helped found the JSA before becoming honorary members was not explained until DC Special #29 in 1977. Hawkman is the only member to appear in every JSA adventure in the original run of All Star Comics and the Atom missed two issues This bothers me and having said that - it would be very difficult to keep track of who is honorary or not. Justice Society of America was formally introduced in All Star Comics #3 (Winter Issue - 1940). In my own knowledge - Hawkman and the Atom were the only two true Justice Society of America Members and the rest of them were Honorary because of the rule when a a certain member have their own book they becomes - HONORARY MEMBERS of the JUSTICE SOCIETY of which baffled me even today. I know I'm not really making sense to you but that the rule in the italic portion of this post of which I have a even a harder time accepting it. So, in the next 7 posts - in a 3-4 days period and using Covers to showcase it - I will share some information about that Cover that I consider that cover a significant issue to understand. It won't be easy thing for me to explain but I would like some help in this. PLease understand this - and please don't bother criticize me because my information that I give you is based on my own knowledge of that particular cover and I will be using other covers to fully supprt that claim. This is not an easy task to go through the entire Golden Age of the Justice Society of the America - but, like Phil Maurice said it's has a glorious history that many readers do not know much about. I maybe rambling here and there and I'm about to share my thoughts about the Justice Society through 11 Covers that I consider groundbreaking.

Justice Society of the America - Post 1 of 7All Star Comics #1Based on my knowledge that both Hour Man and Hawkman were the first two members of the Justice Society of the America and having said that - back then Hourman was spelled out Hour Man and my own grandfather told me when i was eight years old and he collected comic books too and told me repeatedly that Hourman - always spelled out Hour and Man separately. Hour Man missed several issues along the way and The Hawkman and in those days - they put the emphasis on the word "The" at the beginning of their names. This issue was the starting point of the Justice Society. I don't know anything about the Red, White, Blue character that is listed here in this cover and the 2nd cover that I'm going to showcase here in this post. Could anyone here care to explain the significant of the Red, White, and Blue character. All Star Comics #2Then, they added The Spectre, The Green Lantern, The Flash, Johnny Thunder, and The Sandman next. They displayed The Spectre, The Green Lantern, and The Flash on the cover for #2. And, this is Starting Point #2. I consider both these covers historic because it's led the reader something big is brewing and that's coming up in Post 2!That's coming in tomorrow ...

Justice Society of the America - Post 2 of 7All Star Comics #3In this issue marked the true beginning of the Justice Society of America with the original membership pictured here and this is a landmark issue that rocked the world that day when they appeared for the first time together. It was the grand-daddy of all Super Groups and still is being discussed today at all Local Comics Bookstores and comic forums like this one today. If I had the $$$$$ to spend - I would spend whatever it's takes to own this issue because it's must have issue for all Comic Fans that loves the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA. So, this is where there journey starts and that went on nearly 4 years during World War Two that's was considered a grand time for Comic Book Readers back then. I wished I had a time machine to go back and enjoy this series and collect All Star Comics. All Star Comics #8Dr. Midnite and Starman joins the Justice Society of America in this landmark issue that also feature for the first time - Appearance by Amazon Princess - Wonder Woman who serve as a team secretary from this point on and not participate in any of it's adventures. When, I first heard of this - I was very sad and they had to respect Charles Moulton's philosophy at the time that he was still living and he was under great deal of pressure from comic book fans to press the Amazon Princess in a more an active role and that's was taken in considerations in later issues. It was an pivotal issue of Issue #8 of All Star Comics and having three characters to be involved in the Justice Society of America - Dr. Midnite and Starman as members and Wonder Woman as the club secretary was truly an amazing thing to see then of where JSA is in a growth spurt that's was a momental to all readers of All Star Comics back then. Again, Members of Classic Comics Forum and it's guests - Covers posted here in this thread that deals with the Justice Society of America are the most influential and prestigious of all covers in All Star Comics History. I wanted to stress that today because I'm not finished with the remaining covers and having covered 4 out 11 covers so far.

Justice Society of the America - Post 3 of 7All Star Comics #12This is the most iconic cover of all time it's placed Wonder Woman in a position that she is front and center - signaling her into more responsibility to the Justice Society of the America and many people that I talked to consider this issue an landmark one because it's so different like any other cover around that's the beauty of this cover itself. Justice Society at this time is in the threshold of greatness and this issue marked the beginning of the glory days of the JSA. This issue paved the way and that's what makes the Justice Society the Grand-Daddy of all Super Groups and rightly so. I just loved this cover because it's one of the neatest covers of all time. All Star Comics #13This is the cover and the story of which Wonder Woman became an active member of the Justice Society of the America and it's changed the way comic book readers look at her and I believe that it's about time that they made her an active member because she is one of their strongest members and I just don't understand why they wasted her in the previous issues because of the pressures of Charles Moulton who created her in the first place. I have mixed feelings about Mr. Moulton when he created Wonder Woman and I felt that she is the most unappreciated character in DC Comics history and I always felt that. And, this is the cover that marked the beginning of a more active role for her and I was happy that they had the courage to do so. All Star Comics #14After Wonder Woman became an active member of the JSA and the Justice Society has been riding on a threshold of greatness and moving forward to a more positive position for it's fans. They (The Publisher of this Comic Book) decided to open up a Fan Club for all All Star Comics Readers and they send their monies in to get a Junior Justice Society Membership certificate and most importantly a real cool pin along with it. This is the first issue that marked the beginning of a fan relationship with the Justice Society of America and with this cool pin and all this is considered an landmark issue because of the Publisher wants to connect with the fans of All Star Comics in it's unique way and that's decision by the Publisher was a wise one indeed and a very profitable one too. All kids wanted that pin! Justice Society of America was at the Height of it's Glory when Issue #14 first appeared on scene.

Justice Society of the America - Post 4 of 7All Star Comics #36This is the issue everyone was waiting for the first and only issue in the GOLDEN AGE OF COMICS that has both Batman and Superman on the cover of All Star Comics. It was a groundbreaking issue an issue of all issues that I consider one of the most sought after issue that all collectors wants. Both Titans of Justice - the legendary detective from Gotham City and the man of tomorrow from Metropolis are graced on the cover of ALL STAR COMICS #36. It was a truly epic event and one of the most beloved cover of all time. JUSTICE SOCIETY OF THE AMERICA never, ever, looked better on that truly awesome COVER!

Justice Society of the America - Post 5 of 7All Star Comics #38In this issue marked the first appearance of the Black Canary the 2nd (briefly a honorary guest/member) Woman of the Justice Society of America and this issue was the Cornerstone of the the landmark issue that will be appearing shortly in this post that I'll get to in a moment. It was an significant one because it was historic as well. I felt that Black Canary was the oblivious choice because she got her start in Flash Comics and made a big splash of it - with both Flash and The Hawkman assisting her in this great issue of Flash #92. All Star Comics #41This issue is truly an HISTORIC ISSUE because it's marked for the first time that a Comic Book Cover featuring two female heroes - Black Canary and Wonder Woman appearing together in an adventure involving a case "The Case of the PATRIOTIC CRIMES" that I consider it my favorite issue of the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA. Man, when fans saw that cover for the first time - many readers were in disbelief that two females graced the cover and that was a truly a sight to see and this was the time of where many readers were delighted to see that and this made many girls happy to see two female champions aiding the call of Justice and that alone was a tremendous event in the issue of All Star #41! Black Canary arrives and now a full-fledged member of the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA! I will be done tomorrow with the last cover and some final words of the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA in the Golden Age of Comics!

Justice Society of the America - Post 6 of 7All Star Comics #57I consider this Comic Book is the last of the Golden Age of the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA ... and the next issue marked the beginning of the Super Squad of which I didn't care for it's featured two group and this starts the shift to the beginning of the Silver Age of Comics. Some of you may argue with me on this; but I say so because I consider the Issues of All Star Comics from Issue #3 to Issue #57 is really the Golden Age of Comics. This issue - Issue #57 was an letdown for some fans when the next issue was the beginning of the SUPER SQUAD of which bothers lots of fans of the Justice Society and I did not buy that at all. They had a great 54 issues run that last nearly four years during World War Two that made JSA a really special group to many of the old folks that cares about the Golden Age of the Justice Society. It's still consider the GRAND-DADDY OF ALL THE SUPER GROUPS and all groups that came after them. Tomorrow, I will do something special ... stay tuned everyone!
