I am usually not crazy about retcons. But I dont generally dislike a lot of the characters people mentioned here. I really liked the Sentry. However I mainly liked him in his original mine series. There it really worked for me. Early new avengers was okay too although it did end up being a bit to much. Which I feel is often the case with retcons. In some cases it really works, like mrp mentioned with Cap and Bucky above, and in some cases we get stuff like the whole complicated mesh with Jean Grey.

I hate some of them but some, like Barbatos or the Winter Soldier or Swamp Thing Plant Elemental, are good.

If the story is good I don't really care if it matches with past events or not.

COMIC WRITERS ARE RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS!!!!!!! They might have to go back to the GOLDEN AGE OF COMICS and start doing this instead. FEB .. MAR APR .. MAY JUNE .. JULY AUG .. SEPT OCT .. NOV DEC .. JAN Instead of 12 books a year ... settle for SIX to come up with new stories and give them more time to think!

The Golden Age was jam-packed with retcons, folks, Superboy being one of the most flagrant.
Cei-U! I summon the sun under which there is nothing new! (Whew, that was convoluted!)

Yeah, it depends on the individual case. But my general attitude is similar to the one I have towards changes of any kind: if it's something I thought was already good as it was, your retcon better be pretty damn exceptionally good if it's going to overcome my prejudice in favour of leaving the older version alone.
It can happen - Miller's Daredevil and of course Moore's Swamp Thing are the two most obvious examples I always think of when this subject arises - but I think it's pretty rare. Most of them strike me as dumb ideas in themselves, even if they weren't part of a retcon - like Sentry, for example.

How about 50's Cap being another person ? That was a good retcon Bearing in mind that the first retcon was Genesis 2, the questions we should pose are: "Is this retcon necessary?" "Does this retcon enhance our knowledge of the person or event in a meaningful way?" "Will it look cool?" I think we'd all agree that Captain America 153-156 answers strongly in the affirmative to all three!

When, I was reading Comics back then and that's was 20-30 years ago and I did not know what was a Retcons is until someone here in this forum explained to me a little more a year ago and that's makes me mad and I did not know that this term existed. I still hate them for what they worth ...

I'm for some of this, like Barbatos, the big bad of DC's summer event, Metal, having influenced Bruce Wayne from another dimension to become Batman. It sounds sacrilegious, but I like it. OTOH, I absolutely hate the idea of this new, supposedly critical Avenger none of us has ever known about (Voyager), going clear back to the group's origin. I remember the Sentry, another really bad idea. What characters or concepts have you liked or disliked that have been retroactively inserted into continuity ? Triumph, back in the 90s. I hated the way he was scotch-taped onto the founding of the Justice League. According to Christopher Priest, just about EVERYONE hated Triumph. That said, I did enjoy reading about him in The Ray and Justice League Task Force, even though it bordered on overexposure at times.

I remember the character but nothing else about him, so I guess he wasn't so great
