Batman/Judge Dredd: Ultimate Riddle (1995) Grant/Wagner/Critchlow/Power
This one Riddler lures Batman into a trap. But this trap isn't even terrestrial. And when Batman comes to he finds himself caged among Judge Dredd and many others. It's a hunt. Seven warriors hunt one. And the winner of the kill leaves alive. Or if the quarry kills all his hunters he lives. One way or another only one walk away alive. But Batman keeps being bothered by what this has to do with the Riddler.
Critchlow nails it on this one. Power (who does the latter half) is good. But more like Bisley and Bolton. Critchlow is a mile apart from them. His style is uniquely his own. Especially with the other worldly creatures that were featured. Really suited his skills.
The surprise ending is pretty good. And so far my favorite of the three crossover. It's the second chronologically the second crossover so at least Batman and Judge Dredd have a relationship so to speak. Even if they have different methods, they still have the same goal. And that the perp Dredd was interrogating before being interdimensionally abducted provides some comedy relief is nice.

Really he always seemed like a poor man's Bisley to me... And I wn every single 2000AD and Megazine from that era. I actually passed on that chapter because of Critchlow, so I don't remember it that well, tbh... The thig about Bisley is tha tbeyond his amazing ink work, he is one of the very best color artists ever. And his early 90ies cover work is one of the most imaginative ever as well. As for Bolton, he is in a completly different realm of his own, trying to find a balance between his pre-raphaelite influences and Mucha.

I didn't mean that in terms of talent, as much as my personal preference when it comes to these painters. Bisley, Power and Bolton are all similar to me in style. Critchlow is distict from them, after having read Batman: Manbat and Judgment on Gotham. So it was more my expression of how well I though he suited the story, over say, Power, who did the later half of the story. But I will agree with you on Bisley when it comes to his coloring talent. He is heads above most the rest. Even Critchlow that seems to keep everything dark and gray. Bisley, like Power, Bolton, and even Scott Hampton, does too, but he manages to still inject it with a lot of color and flare.

If and when you decide to take this thread beyond the superhero genre: started in the 80s (and still going strong), but for many of us marked the early 90s. going through those old L&R books is like revisiting highschool friends.
