Meanwhile, back to Byrne, I wish I could look at his work from the late 1970's-late 1980's the same way, knowing what he's said (from what he's said, himself) on his own forum.
Hard, very hard.
It's why I used the Caravaggio analogy.

Jerry Ordway doesn't have to imitate anyone's style. He actually learned how to *draw* instead, not unlike such master draftsmen as Curt Swan, Steve Rude, and John Buscema. Of course, good drawing chops aren't all it takes to be a great comics artist, so Jerry's skills as a visual storyteller further contribute to his status as one of my all-time favorites.

Ordway like Sinnott and a few other inkers always made whoever they were inking look a lot better. It's like a clean breath of air.

Power Of Shazam GN In terms of writing, you could say the whole Power of Shazam series. He was the first person, in my opinion, to really balance the more playful Captain Marvel of the Golden Age with a more serious Captain Marvel of the Modern Age. His All-Star Squadron and Infinity Inc work is great, too.

I loved his Superman and Earth-2 titles as well, but really, his Big Red Cheese and the Fawcett family in Power of Shazam are so good. Note : I'd forgotten Peter Krause drew those, but still, the title is magic. Speaking of which, am I the only one who feels like DC has always been a little ahead of the market ? I can't tell you how many concepts or titles they've done that faltered and withered on the vine and cancelled but later were collected and people really liked em ? Power of Shazam is one of many that come to mind.

Peter Krause drew the majority of the series*, but Jerry Ordway did draw the last 7 or 8 issues, mostly with Dick Giordano inking. Those issues also had a change in direction and tone for the series, which I liked for the first several issues, but it kind of ran out of steam near the end.
Still, the first year or so of the book was the best, despite a few, uh, questionable plot choices.
A number of issues feature art by Curt Swan, Gil Kane, Joe Staton, and one fully drawn by series inker Mike Manley. Good stuff.
