I really like the Hassles soulful version of Fever. Featuring a young Billy Joel

I guess this really doesn't belong here per say ... as I didn't like the cover. But anyway was in my truck getting lunch and the radio played Can't Help Falling In Love by UB40. Let's just say I am not as a big of fan of their cover of it as I am Red, Red Wine.

I don't like any of those 80s covers of 60s and 70s hits, unless there's something that's slipping my mind at the moment: they almost always sounded so very limp and lifeless compared to the originals: the 80s versions of Stevens's Wild World, Diamond's Red Red Wine, Banarama suffocating the Shocking Blues' Venus to death, ... bleah.

As songs that I actually like the cover of but don't like the original would be only UB40's Red, Red Wine and Shinead O'Conner's Nothing Compares 2 U. Off the top of my head anyway.

I feel like I've heard countless covers of "Bonehemian Rhapsody" but this one is truly unique!

In my musical circles, the gold standard cover to me is Metallica's version of "Am I Evil" originally by Diamond Head. I think most metal fans have a "wait, that was a cover?" at some point.

I feel like I've answered this before. . but a quick scan thru some pages didn't find it (and i'm too lazy to go thru 19 pages (hey, I'm watching Harley Quinn on HBO Max! . . it's BRILLIANT by the way).
but my standard answer to "best cover" question are these 3 (two of which happen to be Fleetwood Mac covers):
and my favorite:
the Gira version of "Love Will Tear us Apart"

^ SwanS also did a version with Jarboe on vocals - that's a completely different version, and doesn't make my top 5 covers (but likely would be in top 10. . it's pretty haunting):

Thought this was an interesting take on a New Order classic.
