Reports are surfacing (first reported by CNBC) that Disney has been in talks with Fox to acquire a large chunk of their holdings, including the movie studio that holds the rights to X-Men and the FF. Fox Broadcasting, News and Sports would not be a part of the deal to avoid monopoly and FCC restrictions, but cable channels like FX and National Geographic would be part of the deal. Apparently Fox execs are worried they are not big enough to adapt to new entertainment trends like streaming services getting into original programming and cannot compete with the new entries into the market and feel they need to step away form the entertainment content production aspects of their business, which led to the talks with Disney. They have been on and off again discussions for a while, so it may not be imminent, but something could develop out of this. -M

X-Men and FF back in the Marvel fold could be a good thing. The MCU folks have certainly shown more long-form cinematic confidence and foresight than the Fox folks did with either franchise. The demise of Fox as an entertainment studio would be weird, but I guess there was a time when the loss of United Artists seemed unimaginable.

The X-Men have been done to death on film for the last 17-18 years, and after 3 horrendous, failed movies...I don’t know how marketable the Fantastic Four are now.
But I would be excited for Marvel to have the film rights to characters like Doctor Doom and Silver Surfer.

Regardless of what it might mean for the MCU, consolidation of channels into a few hands is not a good thing for the consumer. Without competition, you usually end up with a homogenized mess, at an inflated price. It's not good for companies selling their shows, as they have fewer buyers to get a better deal. I'm not surprised that things like Fox News, the Fox and related networks aren't on the table. I can't see Newscorp parting with that stuff. The studio stuff is a big cash outlay, while the tv stuff is far cheaper and Murdoch has brokered stations and channels left and right. This more about shoring up their portfolio and short term profitability, to improve their share price. They get a cash influx and dump some albatrosses, while focusing on cheaper content. Disney probably wants to add more content for the young male audience, which was the reason behind acquiring Marvel and Lucasfilm. Their core product skewed heavily young girl; but, the Marvel-based cartoons they broadcast drew great young male numbers. They went after Marvel for the male-oriented intellectual property and Lucasfilm for the same reason. This would give them more of the same, with franchises like the Alien and Predator, plus regain the Fox-held Marvel rights. Should it go through, I predict "Goodbye Inhumans, hello mutants!"

Still waiting for a sequel!

Looks like it fell through, oh well. The initial article did mention they have been taking place on and off for a while, so they have looked like they fell through before only to be picked up again. Everything I see points to dead for the moment, not final nail in the coffin dead. I think part of it might be seeing what happens with the Time Warner acquisition by AT&T (word came today the Fed would force them to sell CNN if this happened and other interventions before the deal would be given the green light by the Fed) to see which way the wind is blowing in terms of regulations and government oversight of these types of huge mergers in the current administration and then craft the details of a Disney/Fox deal to make it workable in that climate. First rule of the art of warfare (i.e. corporate mergers) know your battle ground and choose accordingly. -M

For all of Marvel's success, not having access to their greatest villain in Doom is a glaring hole. Getting to finally see the Surfer and Galactus done right would be a dream come true. It's extremely irritating that some of Marvel's greatest concepts are wasted on such a lousy studio.

It's extremely irritating that some of Marvel's greatest concepts are wasted on such a lousy studio. Yep I’ve wanted to see a great character actor like Gary Oldman portray Doom for years. Some may say he’s a little too long in the tooth at this point, but I would assume that the guy is going to be wearing the iron mask over his face for at least 95% of a potential movie anyways, so who cares? Cast some young, up-and-comer for the cocky, brilliant young scientist parts if you’re going for an origin story and have Oldman take over from there. My only worry would be that even though I’ve immensely enjoyed the MCU movies for the most part, the villains almost always leave plenty to be desired. Doom is a villain who deserves, hell, outright demands to be front and center stage. You have to devote a large chunk of screen time to him in whatever movie he would potentially appear in. Anything less would be a disservice of epic proportions.

He might be the only villain who needs his own film to do his origin justice.

I'm surprised no one started a thread on this given the huge ramifications it could have on the comic/sci-fi/geek community, so I thought I'd get one going. Here's the latest from Variety... it looks like things getting pretty serious. variety.com/2017/biz/news/disney-fox-goldman-sachs-centerview-jp-morgan-guggenheim-partners-1202634210/The X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights returning to Marvel is huge, and the timing couldn't be better with the original iteration of the MCU wrapping up in the next couple of years. Part of me is also hoping that this means maybe we'll get a proper release of the theatrical cut of the original Star Wars trilogy in a digital format.

My main problem with this is corporate consolidation sucks and gives us as consumers less to choose from and makes it harder from independent creators to get into the market. Eventually that damn mouse is gonna own everything! That being said the fanboy in me thinks this may be the only way we can get a good Fantastic Four movie and I'm interested in seeing the X-Characters joint he MCU as well.
