Avengers #189
"Wings and Arrows!"0.40 ¢ @ November 1979 Writer: Steven Grant & Roger Stern Penciler: Johny Byrne Inker: Dan Green Colorist: Ben Sean Letterer: Jim Novak Editor: Roger Stern Editor-in-Chief: Jim Shooter Synopsis: Thor bid Iron Man farewell at Avengers Mansion, and flew to return to Asgard. Deep in thought regarding his upcoming confrontations with the Celestials, he didn't notice The Falcon flying in greeting him. He flew down to Avengers Mansion and was welcomed by Iron Man who told Falcon about the government authorization to have extra Avengers members in order to deal with the villain Arsenal in a previous Avengers Annual issue. Inside, there were nine Avengers. There hasn't been that many sine the N.S.C. (National Security Council) limited their roster to seven active members. Falcon checked in with the NSC by having his retina scanned on the new Avengers security check-in scanner, just installed by the NSC. Avengers members retinal patterns are stored in it for quick member identification. Falcon's retinal patterns were scanned, and the machine popped out an Avengers ID card for him. Falcon joked about something then wanted to talk to Hawkeye for a moment, and Hawkeye walked past him bumping in to his shoulders, still pissed off that the government decided to replace his membership on the team with Falcon. Yellowjacket told Iron Man that Hawkeye is never happy unless he has something to complain about. He just got off the phone and it appeared his wife, Janet Van Dyne is stuck in Las Vegas, and Hank Pym needed to borrow a Quinjet to pick her up. Wonder Man told Iron Man his farewll as he to go back to Off-Broadway where there's a young starlet waiting. The Beast, Hank McCoy was proud Simon Williams said that. Captain America told Falcon not to worry about Hawkeye, and to let Mr. Gyrich, the government gadlfy, know that he's back with the team. Moments later, Captain America gave a report to Gyrich who was on the videoscreen. Now all they have to do is return Ms. Marvel to standby member status and reinstate the Scarlet Witch, who just happened to walk in with The Vision. She told them she would like to extend her leave of absence to sort a lot of more things. This elicited a surprised response from Vision, Captain America, and Gyrich, who started stomping and verbally lashing out in his office to the videoscreen, and told them not to leave, and that he is flying to New York immediately, to sort this mess, and clicked off the viewscreen. Scarlet Witch asked Captain America if she said anything wrong. Hawkeye walked back to the lower east side of Manhattan to the room he's renting. He picked up his mail, and upon entering his room, he was pissed off that The Avengers took all of Gyrich's crap, threw the mail on the floor because no one replied positively to his resume about the carnival. After all he can't put Hawkeye, Avenger, on the resume. Too bad he can't apply as Hawkeye. Then he received a retainer fee from Jarvis who sent it out to all reserve Avengers. Then he saw a positive mail for once. It said Cross Technical Enterprises needs an immediate hiring of a security chief with high salary and great benefits. The following morning, Mr. Keeshan arrived at Cross Technological Enterprises, where he found out no one responded to their ad about the opening on security chief of the facility, and that someone broke in again last night in their west storage area. He couldn't believe it happened again as they have the most sophisticated security known to man, with cameras and alarm systems everywhere, and fingerprint coded locks that only employees can open, and there's infra-red detectors in all the hallways and only proper cards can access the hallways and doors. He opened the door to his office, and was surprised to see Hawkeye sitting at his chair and feet on his desk waiting for him. Before Mr. Keeshan reached the alarm button to press it, his forearm was stuck on the door hit by one of Hawkeye's special arrows. He told him, it's just a sample of what he can do. He told him he needed to start the job right away, and he got through their security system with no problem. Mr. Keeshan thought about it... and... Two nights later, Hawkeye's telling himself he lucked out on a cushy job that also provided his new pad on the West Side, as he read a magazine. There's no sign of crooks, but then a light lit up on a panel telling him there's a problem in Warehouse 12. Excited, he sprung into action heading that way. He noticed the door's not open, so the crook either came in through the floor or the ceiling. Upon entering Warehouse 12, he saw the middle part of the ceiling is melted wide open, and the two security guards are unconscious on the floor. He deduced the intruder came from above, and ducking just in time, because a flying humanoid suddenly swooped down on him slicing some of his quivers with her razor sharp wings. She announced she is Deathbird. He shot a sonic arrow towards her, temporarily halting her attacked as the high-pitched noise piereced her ears. She renewed her attack using her energy javelins blasting him. He used another quiver to attach to beams in the ceiling and pulled him upwards to maneuver him to hit Deathbird. And they kept battling, where she threw him down and swooped down on him, only to kick her in the face. She hit him directly with a javelin, and then blasted him, barely missing him. Hawkeye hit a fusebox by hurling a quiver at it and caused a blackout in the warehouse. Deathbird thinking others will come made her way to the ceiling to escape the melee, but she didn't know Hawkeye was in the rafters waiting for her. And he threw a titanium-steel net entrapping her. A little later, armed security arrived to escort Deathbird out of the warehouse and to carry the security personnel that were hurt earlier to get medical attention. Other security personnel asked if Hawkeye required medical attention, and if he can teach them to fight like the way he did. Deathbird turned to face Hawkeye and told him she won't forget this and that he can count on that. And Hawkeye went to her and kissed her on the lips to remember him by. And Deathbird walked out of there cursing at him, as security struggled to hold her from attacking him, to Hawkeye's chagrin. Jocasta arrived back in Avengers Mansion and was welcomed by Jarvis. In an adjacent room, Gyrich is having a verbal battle with Iron Man, as Jocasta entered the room, and Captain America holding Beast from attacking Gyrich. Iron Man told him they can't force people to be Avengers, and Gyrich threatened him, this is the end of the Avengers. Comments: The definition of gadfly is an annoying person, especially one who provokes others into action through criticism. When Captain America told Falcon not to worry about Hawkeye, and to let Mr. Gyrich, the government gadlfy, know that he's back with the team. And the Avengers can't stand him, but have to put up with him. Not everything is kosher among the members. Hawkeye didn't take too kindly to the government replacing his active roster status with that of the Falcon. Things worked out for him with a cushy job at Cross Technological Enterprises, which saw him have his first action there in a few days after assuming the job of security chief. He even got to make out with the enemy at the end. And what did the Scarlet Witch have to sort out? I noticed this is a pretty thick comic book. Thirty-six pages cover to cover. But it read rather quickly. No wonder. There are seventeen pages of actual comic book story. Then there's the cover page, the Letters page, the Bullpen Bulletin with Stan's Soapbox page, and sixteen pages worth of ads.

Avengers #190
"Heart of Stone"0.40 ¢ @ December 1979 Writer: Roger Stern & Steven Grant Penciler: Johny Byrne Inker: Dan Green Colorist: Ben Sean Letterer: John Costanza Editor: Roger Stern Editor-in-Chief: Jim Shooter Synopsis: A meteorite came through the Earth's atmosphere and passed NYC and headed for the Atlantic Ocean. And then all of a sudden it veered course as if it had a life of its own and went to crash in the marshes of Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn, New York. Then making a sound as if it is cracking, it slowly rose up with marsh dripping from is stony form. It opened its eyes and adjusted and rose up with limbs now for locomotion, and headed towards the vicinity of Manhattan. In downtown Manhattan that morning, the Avengers, led by their defense lawyer, were mobbed by the news reporters, with the police having trouble keeping them away, as the Avengers made their way to a federal courthouse and entered its premises. Inside, the Avengers entered a room, which Gyrich and his law team were already in, and Gyrich welcomed them to their funeral. News reporters covered the Avenges trial news, and also the meteorite that touched off a rash of UFO reports. In the Brooklyn's Number Two train subway station, The Alien Stone Creature attacked an MTA booth and slammed a police officer to the side of the wall who was shooting at it. People ran in all directions as the creature made its way on the subway tracks and disappeared in the darkness of the subway train tracks. A little later, in the Senators hearing, inside courtroom, the Avengers special defense counselor went over how his clients over the years repeatedly saved the government, saved them money and embarrassment. And asked is this how the Avengers are repaid after saving the world and Manhattan in particular, countless times. But that is not the issue, as one of the senator asked Gyrich how cooperating with the Avengers threatens the country's national security. Gyrich proceeded, and brought in a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who testified that Captain America took control of a special unit to take part in the fall of a criminal stronghold despite a lack of S.H.I.E.L.D. official status, and that he has a knack for sticking his nose where it doesn't belong, and that is definitely a threat. This infuriated the Avengers present, with Falcon telling the Senators hearing that Captain America's "interference" saved his life and Cap not advising this S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that the court will now listen to him? Infuriated, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tried to mouth off, but Gyrich silenced him to calm down. Iron Man, Beast, and Wasp, are tired of the government interference that's why they called for this hearing and one way or another, it will be settled. Captain America is calm, with nothing to worry about. Back in a subway station, in the Manhattan side, S.W.A.T. teams behind many sandbags in defensive positions prepared for the alien stone creature to pass by. They opened fire on it without causing even a single damage, and the creatures used its outstretched "arms" to destroy the S.W.A.T. teams defensive positions as it made its way and left the area. The law enforcement men told each other there's nothing they can do to stop such a creature. The only thing that can stop it are either the Fantastic Four or the Avengers. Back at the senators hearing, Gyrich continued to "prosecute" the Avengers, even telling them the only time security was enforced, thanks to Hawkeye, who was a returning member, who ignored security procedure, keeping him, Gyrich, bound up as a prisoner, while he, Hawkeye, made a breakfast sandwich. Beast whispered to the others no wonder Gyrich made them leave Hawkeye off of their regular roster. Cap told Iron Man that Gyrich is very persuasive, but Iron Man told him to hold on as he picked up a call on their emergency wavelength. It was Jarvis who told Iron Man that the police requested emergency Avengers assistance. The police said it was an unstappable stone creature rampaging through the downtown area. Iron Man requested a reschedule of the hearing for a later date as the NYPD requested emergency Avengers assistance. Gyrich had an outburst that the Avengers just wanted to look good in front of the committee. Captain America has had it. He told off Gyrich that the Avengers never turned down a request or plea for help. Gyrich responded there isn't any menace anywhere and that business at hand has to be finished. One of Gyrich's men turned on the televisions and substantiated the threat when it showed the stone creature wreaking havoc in the streets of Manhattan. Seeing the proof, Captain America ordered the Avengers to go to the crisis. The Beast stopped Captain America, citing that Gyrich thinks the Avengers are pests and not needed anymore and that the government better handle this crisis, so Beast broke off a piece of wood from a chair and went up to Gyrich and handed it to him, telling Gyrich to go fight the stone creature. Gyrich became silent, then looked at the television who was causing havoc in Manhattan's streets, looked away and pointed outwards for the Avengers to go and that they win. The Avengers were happy to do so. The defense team of lawyers were glad of this outcome with Gyrich suffering a blow to his credibility. They asked attorney Matthew Murdoch if they should consider their tactics, but Murdoch wasn't there. The lawyers were baffled at how a blind man like Murdoch can move so fast. Unknown to them, Matthew Murdoch went to change to his Daredevil costume and snuck out the window to go to the crisis to help the Avengers secure the alien stone creature. His radar sense led him to where the Avengers were in the middle of a battle with the alien stone creature. Captain America's shield attack was brushed off the creature, sending Captain America flying in the opposite direction, which Daredevil, incoming via his billy club grappling hook, caught Captain America before he hit a store window. Wasp's sting blaster attacks were ineffective. And Ms. Marvel's punching hurt her, more than it hurt the creature, almost breaking her hand. But Beast and Vision had more success as Beast monkey-flipped the creature over to Vision who punched it and sent it flying against a building's wall. And Scarlet Witch noticed something peculiar and told the team that it is not a creature, but someone wearing a suit of some kind. Scarlet Witch blasted the alien stone creature with two hex bolt blasts, changing its rockets and instead it hurled towards the two strongest Avengers that are present, and combined, Iron Man and the Vision, punched the creature to a surprising result. It shattered to many small rock pieces. Iron Man said that he will take samples to have it analyzed at Stark Enterprises. But Daredevil with radar sense, noticed two heartbeats and warned Iron Man to move from the shattered rocks and went to remove Iron Man from the debris. But it was too late. To the horror of the remaining Avengers, both Daredevil and Iron Man were turned to instant stone statues. And the supervillain, The Grey Gargoyle emerged from the debris of shattered stone, and told the Avengers that he is there to kill them. Comments: What's great about these comic book issues from before the Decompression Era began, is that they have many things going on at the same time in the comic book. Unlike what would take an entire comic book issue, the senatorial hearing just took up a couple of pages, and the interaction conveyed the conflict between Gyrich and the Avengers, and it moved the story forward at the end to go to the next conflict which is against the alien stone creature, which turned out to be the Grey Gargoyle. I have to hand it to Roger Stern... I didn't see that ending coming. Even though the Avengers had prior experience battling and defeating the Grey Gargoyle, seeing a teammate and friend be turned to stone is still horrifying to witness. So now, they have to deal with this super-villain, and then they still have to finish up business in the wake in dealing with Gyrich, who's trying to shut government cooperation with the Avengers.

Avengers #191
"Back to the Stone Age!"0.40 ¢ @ January 1980 Writer: Roger Stern & David Michelinie Penciler: Johny Byrne Inker: Dan Green Colorist: Ben Sean Letterer: John Costanza Editor: Roger Stern Editor-in-Chief: Jim Shooter Synopsis: Grey Gargoyle took the Avengers by surprise and was about to turn Falcon to stone, but he was saved by Vision who punched Grey Gargoyle and sending him down the street. Grey Gargoyle then attacked and punched Vision who went through the side of a building wall. Scarlet Witch ran to Vision with concern to check up on him, and Grey Gargoyle punched her in the back of the head, knocking her out. Beast attacked, and was thrown off by Grey Gargoyle sending Beast hurtling and taking Captain America as they crashed through the wall of a building. Grey Gargoyle turned the awning to stone and was too heavy and broke into many pieces and landed on top of Beast and Captain America. Ms. Marvel grabbed Grey Gargoyle and threw him against ground real hard, but Grey Gargoyle kicked Ms. Marvel in the face as she moved too slow for a follow up attack, knocking her out in the process. Grey Gargoyle is not in a rush to kill them right now, even though he could have. But he'll return for them once he's bored, or when he has finished attending to urgent matters. And he left by climbing a building and disappearing in the rooftops. At Avengers Mansion, Jarvis was preparing a meal in anticipation of the Avengers arriving after a long day at the senators hearing. Falcon's bird was going nuts trying to leave the Mansion, and Jarvis opened the window, and the bird darted out as if it's master's life was in danger. Back in the scene of battle, Ms. Marvel woke up along with Scarlet Witch. Beast dug himself out of the stone rubble with Wasp's help blasting away at the rubble. Ms. Marvel started digging up Captain America through the rubble. Scarlet Witch went over to Vision who regained consciousness and re-materialized himself. Captain America checked on Iron Man and Daredevil who were turned to stone. Iron Man is okay as only is armor was touched and turned to stone. Beast asked Captain America what happened to Falcon? High atop, Falcon was following Grey Gargoyle as he went from rooftop to rooftop until he reached his apartment. And he was surprised to see a woman inside who unknown to him was renting it. He entered and surprised the woman, who couldn't escape as Grey Gargoyle turned the door to stone, and the woman wanted him to have a good explanation for this. Grey Gargoyle smiled, and then he told her his origin story. He was once Paul Duval the most brilliant and underappreciated chemist that ever lived. He experimented at turning to stone anything his right hand for an hour with success. He learned that when he touched himself he turned and had the durability of stone but could still move. He recalled his battles with the Mighty Thor. Eventually he was imprisoned in space, but the Avengers unintentionally set him free in the last issue. He came to his apartment to get some chemicals behind a mirror which went to fetch only to be surprised the chemical bottles are gone and replaced by alcoholic beverages. Infuriated he threatened the woman. The Falcon came in to make a save and barely avoided a cigarette ashtray that was turned to stone that was hurled at him. He grabbed the woman, and his bird arrived, which he ordered to go get the Avengers. The Grey Gargoyle grabbed the bird and turned it to stone before it left the apartment building. He turned his attention to the Falcon and they engaged in hand to hand combat as Falcon avoided his hand that turned things to stone, but eventually he got caught with a punch in the face downing him. Grey Gargoyle was about to turn Falcon to stone, when Captain America's shield hit the oblique of Grey Gargoyle, hurting him. The Avengers were more prepared this time and attacked in unison in a strategic fashion. And thus with great teamwork they were able to overcome Grey Gargoyle, with the Scarlet Witch putting a hex spell on him, turning him human flesh again, and Beast punching out Grey Gargoyle and knocking him out. The woman renting the apartment begged the Avengers to explain what happened to the apartment to her landlord. Later on, at the rescheduled senators hearing, after hearing the testimonies of both parties, the senators decided that the Avengers priority privileges and security clearances will remain intact and the restrictions on their autonomy will be lessened considerable. Gyrich congratulated Iron Man telling him that they will have more Avengers members than ever now that they won. Iron Man actually disagreed and told Gyrich they were going to size down the Avengers membership. This surprised Gyrich. Captain America thinks they can relax now with a load off their shoulders. But Iron Man disagreed that for some Avengers it wouldn't be that easy as he looked towards Scarlet Witch and Vision who were looking outside the window as if in deep thought about a problem bothering them. Comments: This was a standard slugfest, that was done right. Recon helped place the Avengers in the concluding battle and they ended on an intelligent level of overcoming this particular super-villain with their magic user turning the enemy to flesh and bones who can be taken down with one punch. But there is one severe failing mark here. Roger Stern and David Micheline never explained how Daredevil was turned back to human flesh after being turned to stone in the last issue. Perhaps we readers are to infer that the Scarlet Witch would turn him back to flesh like the way she turned Grey Gargoyle to human flesh.

Ever since his 1st appearance as a Thor villain it was established the Gargoyle's transmutation of people to stone only lasts 1 hour. While it can be considered a mark against them as writers not including this power factoid within the story it is easy to understand them skipping or missing it with having so much happen in these 2 issues.

His armor turns to stone but he remains human within this granite encasement so he must be sweating up a storm. And what if he needs a potty break? Oy Vey! It's funny you mentioned that. Us readers, would think about real world occurrences in regular human life such as that. I mean of you have to go, then by all means, do not stop nature from taking its course right? But in the superhero world, they don't address those things. But it did have me thinking that comic book stories are more realistic today. However, I can just imagine if they did address that "nature is calling" scenario with Iron Man, I am sorry to say that in this age of comic book decompressed storytelling era, that it might take up a good portion of the issue just dealing with that particular scenario which definitely would not move the story forward. However, I can just imagine the hilarious dialogue that can be written about it, and the description in the distress in Iron Man's eyes in the illustrations in several pages as the dialogue is conveyed.

Avengers #227
"Testing... 1... 2... 3 !"0.60 ¢ @ January 1983 Writer: Roger Stern Penciler: Sal Buscema Inker: Brett Breeding Colorist: Joe Rosen Letterer: Christie Scheele Editor: Mark Gruenwald Editor-in-Chief: Jim Shooter Synopsis: At Avengers Mansion, the team is running a test on the new Captain Marvel's powers. And she traveled the world in under two seconds, and team leader, The Wasp offered her a membership, and two thirds of the team answered immediately with a "yes" coming from Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Jarvis showed the new member around the Mansion. Jan excused herself and left. Hawkeye voiced his displeasure at the new team leader calling the members just to screen new members. Captain America defended Jan's call citing it is her privilege as group leader in regards to calling members to attend special meetings. She-Hulk jabbed a vibe towards Hawkeye, who didn't like dealing with the women in the team. But Hawkeye's not the only one with problems regarding the team. Iron Man revealed to Captain America he screwed up by the way he acted in his civilian disguise as Tony Stark and pursuing Janet Van Dyne, so close to her divorce proceedings with Hank Pym. He was contemplating resigning from the team, but Captain America talked him out of it. Jarvis showed the computer room to Captain Marvel who was curious to learn about the previous predecessor who assumed the name Captain Mar-vell. At Central Park, Reed Richard and Susan Storm Richards were jogging, but was running late for their lunch meeting with Avenger team leader, The Wasp. Mr. Fantastic used his stretching powers to leap with stretching legs and make it to The Wasp's lunch table on time for their lunch meeting. After a brief chit chat, Susan Storm Richards wanted to see how she has been coping separating and divorcing Hank. She reassured Sue that she's okay and excused to use the women's room. Sue was concerned for Jan's mental well being dealing with Hank's expulsion from the team, but Reed assured her Jan's a strong willed woman. At the women's restroom, Janet is talking to herself in the mirror reassuring herself that she won't cry and will show everyone she's leader of the Avengers. That evening, at Ryker's Island, a psychiatrist visited an incarcerated Hank Pym, who detailed his origin and re-evaluated his past which included how he became Ant-Man, how he met Janet van Dyne, and how the Avengers were formed with the founding members. He kept himself locked up in the lab to modify his powers and he became Giant Man, and then wanting to marry Janet, he was again experimenting in his lab when untested gas broke from a broken vial when he dropped it, and the fumes caused another breakdown in him. He was accepted by the Avengers in his new guise as Yellowjacket, but turned on them because of Egghead's frame up and got kicked out of the team. No one believed him because everyone thought Egghead was dead. Later that evening, the psychiatrist returned to his office and phoned Avengers Mansion and spoke with Tony Stark. He revealed his findings to be that Hank Pym is competent to stand trial. But he, Hank Pym, might have been used by their enemies, which Tony Stark told him, Egghead was dead months ago, and the psychiatrist noted that Hank Pym might have an even deeper delusion. Unbeknownst to all, several miles away, in a laboratory, Egghead is alive, and vowed to even make Hank Pym's life more of a living hell as he planned to ruin Hank Pym's day in court. Comments: Roger Stern assumes regular writing duties from Steven Grant with this issue. This is basically an issue covering many things at the same time. The team is testing the powers of the new superhero, Captain Marvel, and offering her a place in the team. Each member has problems arising within the team. Iron Man's guilty feeling in regards to pursuing Janet as Tony Stark so close to her divorce from Hank. Then there's the origin of Ant-Man. And how Hank Pym became Giant Man, Goliath, and Yellowjacket. Then there's his disgraced removal from the team. No one believed he was framed by Egghead because everyone thought the villain was dead. But as the ending in the issue showed, Egghead's hatred for Hank Pym is so deep, that now after being behind Hank Pym's disgrace, he will ruin Hank Pym at his court date. The guest appearance of Reed and Sue of the Fantastic Four, just showed how the superhero community is a tight-knit group in NYC, and their interactions showed that each team cared for the well being of the other teams, both physically and emotionally.

Stern pulls off the multiple doing's in this issue. It reflects reality in that most times we all have multiple functions going on and that some cross in/out/over and other parts are totally separate but may become part of what is happening later on. Hawkeye the jerk strikes again showing the man still hasn't quite grown up as much as he might think he has by opening mouth and then inserting foot in mouth. the talk between Cap and Shellhead shows their friendship and trust over the years before Tony screws that up later. Wasp shows her maturity as team leader and smarts for introducing new blood into the team and including all of the team in on it which almost never happened very often. A very satisfying issue and good/strong start for Uncle Rog's taking over!

During Galactic Storm around #347, Hawkeye - in his Goliath persona - teamed up with Deathbird. I wrote a letter to Avengers complaining that she would never team up with him after the events of #189. This is the only letter I ever had published - I believe it's in #353. They answered that she just didn't recognize him because he was a giant.
Okay... maybe?

A very satisfying issue and good/strong start for Uncle Rog's taking over! A few years later, Hawkeye is not as much of a jerk in the West Coast Avengers limited series and regular series. Perhaps his marriage to Mockingbird had writers have him acting as a more mature character due to being leader of the West Coast branch, and being a married man. And Uncle Rog's is now in effect as regular series writer for Earth's Mightiest Heroes in the Marvel Universe.
