A wild guess:
{Spoiler: Click to show} I remember the O'Jays had a hit called the Rubberband Man, can't remember the words though, apart from "Rubberband Man" being repeated in the chorus.

My first thought was the Spinners Rubber Band Man (which I had on 45 a a kid), but looking at the lyrics of that song, that's not it.

Oh, was it the Spinners that did Rubber Band Man? That song was my guess too but for some reason I thought it was the Ojays.

I know the Spinners' version, not sure if it was a cover or an original song... PS I had a knock-off super-hero named the Rubberband Man in the comics I made with my cousin when I was a kid, and I always imagined this was his theme song. I would play the 45 when drawing him. -M

My previous one was "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy, a #1 pop hit in 2007. 3x Platinum single! Not my usual style of music, though. An accompanying dance fad included an "Up, up, and away!" Superman move.
OK, next track:
Please, interstellar policeman Oh won't you give us a sign That we've reached you

That one was "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" by Klaatu, also covered by The Carpenters.
Next song:
Well, I dreamed I saw the silver Space ships flying In the yellow haze of the sun

That is correct! Here's an odd pairing of subject matter with singer:
Bought me a robot Made it tick Plugged in the fuse And the lights all lit Things started hopping Getting out of hand Before I knew it, I had a robot man

Yes, really. Next song: I thought that they were angels But to my surprise They climbed aboard their starship And headed to the skies

OK, how about this one?
Start, with the sun And move on out The future's in the skies above The heavens unfold And a new star is born Space and time makin' love

No guesses? Anybody? This was not by a top 40 band, but in 70's hard rock circles they were by no means obscure.

I looked it up since nobody knew it. Never heard that one!
Next track:
Well just 'cause you can walk on water And you know son, I can You know your mamma should have named you Superman

I've heard Montrose before, but that song just did not ring any bells. If I heard it before, it wasn't one that struck me or stuck with me.
