Are there any good Doctor Mid-Nite solo series out there? I know very little about the character besides what I originally learned in Who's Who. I've always found him to be cool and underrated conceptually. Is he represented well in Roy Thomas' All-Star Squadron? Matt Wagner en John K. Snyder III did a great Mid-Nite mini-series, which has been collected even though it's from a time when not that many series got. (But keep in mind that I'm a big Matt Wagner fan and love almost anything he does.) That was the Pietr Cross version of Dr. Mid-Nite though wasn't it? Not the Charles McNider version..or am I misremembering? -M

I'll second the Wagner mini, although with the caveat that Snyder's art isn't for everyone, especially when he's painting. I love Dr K's work, but I'd recommend checking out some samples first.

Any thoughts on the Dark Horse Tarzan series? I already own Tarzan vs Predator: At Earth's Core by Simonsons and Weeks, and I found a very cheap copy of Tarzan and Carson of Venus by Darko Macan and Igor Kordey on the way. I'm not a huge Tarzan fan, but I do appreciate certain key runs with the character like Russ Manning's and Joe Kubert's. I saw that DH is putting out a Tarzan omnibus collecting issues 1-20 of the DH series. A lot of great talent like Tim Truman, Bruce Jones, and Al Williamson, but I haven't heard much about the series. Is this worth picking up? I'm not the biggest Tarzan fan, but I've enjoyed Dark Horse's version very much, along with the Malibu version from the 90's. Honestly, in retrospect, everyone has done a pretty good job with the character. Thanks. I think I'm going to pull the trigger then.
And yeah, consider the artists on Tarzan: Hogarth, Marsh, Manning, Kubert, et al... Kinda hard to think of another character who has had such great art.

Very good point.
Even Marc Hempel's Tarzan for Malibu was appealing

The first one printed on the old newsprint type paper rather than the 2nd one printed on the higher quality paper and with brighter colours. I don't think I read much of the 2nd series - I only have the 1st couple issues from it. It's a bit confusing as it seems that the later issues of the first series (#60s or so and onwards?) were reprints of the early issues of the 2nd series, as far as I can tell. The first series (on the newsprint).. ran alongside the baxter one for a year with new stories... after that the original one (retitled 'tales of the teen titans') started being reprints (for those that wanted cheaper paper, I guess). I think the 1st series is pretty good throughout... it's really not until the Titans Hunt nonsense towards the end of Wolfman's run that things really go south, IMO.

I didn't like his work way back in the day in the 80's on Mars, but I've evolved since then.

Was that Tarzan the Warrior?-if so I have the first issue lying around somewhere and it has a Simon Bisley cover too. It might be in the pile of stuff I have yet to sort through for the CCE, if so, I can send the first issue your way to check out Stranger. -M

The Baxter versions were for the Direct Market, while the newsprint versions were intended for newsstands (although the Direct Market shops got them too). Legion of Super-Heroes and Batman and the Outsiders also went that route. I actually preferred the newsprint editions, at least at first. DC was using a pretty nice grade of newsprint by then (I think it was called Mondo? Mando? Something like that), and they were more appealing to my eye than the slick and garish Baxter books.
