Yeah, I had gotten a copy of this years ago for a pretty small price (fortunately), but I keep seeing a glut of inventory for sale. I like to gauge the true market "best price" by looking at sold auction listings for raw copies. Per eBay in the last couple of weeks, it looks more like a range of about $20 on the lower end to upwards of $40 for a nice NM. $30ish seems about average still. But obviously you have to work a little harder to time those opportunities, the buy it now stuff just sits there at higher prices. I'll tell you, the other DC Comics Presents book that caught me by surpise is #47 with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. I didn't realize until recently how high the price had gotten on this (maybe that's been the case for awhile and I just noticed now, not sure). Yes, it's correct to look at sold listings as a guide, but the lowest starting price is 50. I'm really surprised as It appears the movie is bombing. $50 is the lowest asking starting price for buy it now. But my point is how many people are really getting that. If I look at auctions before November, yeah, I can see more that price range and the movie hype was likely still giving the book a lift. But check out the last few weeks (this is a straight list, no cherry picking): 11/18 - NM copy for $40 11/16 - GD (looks more VG) copy for $30 11/13 - VG+ copy for $31 11/13 - VG+ copy for $21 11/12 - VG copy for $20 11/9 - VG copy for $38 11/9 - F/VF copy for $35 11/2 - G/VG copy for $32 Which suggests to me folks may be hanging on with their ask prices, but they may not be getting as many takers. I see this with a lot of other books that are supposed "keys"...there is SO much inventory out there right now, I wonder if people are panicked that the hot market is weakening and they still need to "get in" and try to cash out some of these books at the higher asking prices. I guess we'll see!

I took a quick look at DC comics presents #49 ( Black Adam appearance). I picked it up for around 30 bucks last year and I was thinking the price would go down after the hype for the movie died down, but I can't find one going for less that 50 bucks. Yeah, I had gotten a copy of this years ago for a pretty small price (fortunately), but I keep seeing a glut of inventory for sale. I didn't realize until recently how high the price had gotten on this (maybe that's been the case for awhile and I just noticed now, not sure). That MOTU book has been a high demand book for at least a decade now. When I was helping out at my lcs from 2012-2014 we could regularly move that book for $40-$50 a pop whenever we got one in, and it rarely sat on the wall for more than a week when we did. It's only gotten in more demand and had prices go up from there. The Star Comics MOTU comics are also in high demand and can move for $30-$50 each depending on condition. A lot of the demand comes from crossover collectors, i.e. toy collectors and MOTU collectors, not just comic collectors. -M

I don't know why I didn't pick that one up years ago (I did grab the 3-issue miniseries a long time ago). I have one of the Star comics issues, but didn't really keep going with it.

I've noticed the prices for Archie comics digest titles going up in price lately. I dont just mean the 70s-80s ones, I'm talking ones of more recent vintage.
They've also gotten much larger in size, 400-1000 pages....the 1000 pagers have a 14.99 cover, that might be a reason why.

If you are looking for trends to chase or get to ahead of the pack, you might want to snap up some Battle Chasers first appearances. Two of the characters had cameo appearances in the second episode of Critical Role's Legend of Vox Machina animated series second season that dropped yesterday... and now legions of Critters are clamoring to get copies of the book. Joey Mad had dome a limited edition lithograph of the Vox Machina characters they auctioned for charity some years back and is a friend of one of the cast members, so not surprising this nod happened, but I suspect ebal and a lot of lcs are getting searched for copies of this book quite a bit this weekend. -M

In the early 90's, I was playing with a cover band out in the Southwest, and I was the youngest guy in the group by far, but the chemistry was all good. We met up with another band at one point to see if we wanted to sort of "merge" (our bass player didn't want to keep covering lead vocals, that sort of thing). Long story short, I got paired with their guitar player who was a good number of years older, but was a talented player and seemed pretty cool. So we all got together to jam and did the whole "what songs do you know?" thing, and at one point we picked Knockin' on Heaven's Door since we all seemed to know it. Song starts off, and I played it the same way I had played it a million times before...Guns 'N Roses version, doing my best Slash impersonation. The other guitar player immediately kills the song and starts yelling at me "WHAT are you playing??" Fortunately someone else in the band was able to translate that I was the newer generation who knew that version, versus the other player who grew up with the actual Bob Dylan classic. As I think about your comment above (for both music and comic books), I realize I've now become the Bob Dylan guy.

Someone maybe panicked and undersold this for $60, so I swooped in and grabbed it. This is the rare Patreon print of Rags #1, it was only available to Patreon subscribers and not in stores (which subsequently got the watered down Antarctic Press variant). This one had an estimated print run of 200 or so copies. My namesake comic.
It's still pretty hot, I flipped it for $250 24 hours later. Not too bad, it was fetching $300 during the boom.

Good catch. If I remember correctly there was a bit of a stink about the fulfillment of this book, something about number of promised copies vs. number of actual copies. Don't remember much more than that.

I think it went something like this. Patreon ran a first print for its subscribers with the cover above, about 200ish. Some copies inevitably leaked on to ebay and were being sold for bucketloads of cash. This annoyed the creators so they did a 2nd print with a different cover for its subscribers, and also a censored print for the wider community which was available for $5.
So although there were more copies of Rags #1 around, the very first printing with the cover above (and virgin cover) remain the rarest.
It's not the rarest of the lot. Before there was a Rags #1, its creator did a Prologue....a 16 page introduction to the character, and printed maybe 40-50 copies to shop it around. There are maybe 25 surviving copies in nicer grades. I also have 2 9.8s....
