Ah, those occasions when 'every 30 days' didn't mean 'once a month'.

What the heck is Marvel doing this month?? Two Thors PLUS a Thor Annual! Two X-Men and two Tales to Astonish! Are they trying to take all of my money? I'll buy these with my $2 in June 1966:Adventure #347 I had this as a back issue and I remember loving it because despite the large cast in this story my favorite Legionnaire Light Lass was prominently featured in several panels. And thank goodness the Swan-Klein team is back on the interior art, after the really simplistic art that appeared in #346 (young Shooter's layouts with really minimal "finishing" by Moldoff...Weisinger loved the kid's storytelling and rushed that story into #346). DC, 12 cents Avengers #31 Marvel, 12 cents Batman #183 Holy TV show, Batman! No way I'd pass this one up. DC, 12 cents Falling In Love #85 Great Jay Scott Pike cover. DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #54 I also had this as a back issue and I just loved it. In particular I liked all the personal business--the baseball game, the Black Panther's kingdom, etc.--that dominated the first third or so of the issue. It also filled me in on the Black Panther--at the time I'd only known him as a part of the Avengers book--and the Inhumans--before this issue I'd had no idea Johnny and Crystal had ever been separated. One of my all-time treasured issues. Marvel, 12 cents Fantasy Masterpieces #4 Marvel, 25 cents Flash #163 I'm not much of a Flash fan but who could resist that cover?! DC, 12 cents Girls' Love Stories #121 Tony Abruzzo cover. He's my favorite romance artist. DC, 12 cents Heart Throbs #103 Another Pike cover DC, 12 cents Jimmy Olsen #95 80-page Giant! DC, 25 cents Lois Lane #67 DC, 12 cents Marvel Super-Heroes Annual #1 Marvel, 25 cents Metal Men #21 DC, 12 cents 10@12 cents each = 1.20 3 giants @25 cents each = 75 Total: $1.95 I'll pick a few of these with the leftover nickel:

Thanks to the peculiarities of last month's line-up, I'm able to afford all my usual Marvel titles, my Schwartz-edited DC books (plus Doom Patrol), and all three first issues from the new King Comics group. Sweet!
Amazing Spider-Man #41 Avengers #42 Batman #184 Detective Comics #355 Doom Patrol #106
Fantastic Four #55 Flash #164 Flash Gordon #1
Green Lantern #47
Justice League of America #47 Mandrake the Magician #1 Phantom #18
Sgt. Fury #34 Showcase #64
Strange Tales #149 Tales of Suspense #82
...all at 12 cents each, leaving an eight cent remainder which I will forward, along with the two cents hanging around from last time, towards next month's go-round.
Cei-U! I summon the raise in allowance I so desperately need!

Why are there so many Sad Sack comics?
All those Richie Rich titles have boggled my mind for decades. But all those Sad Sack comics are even more perplexing, somehow.

No Mad this month. Sad. But Creepy & Eerie in the same month is painful.
Amazing Spider-Man #41
Creepy #11 (that Frazetta cover)
Eerie #6
Fantastic Four #55
Flash Gordon #1 (no way I can pass up that Al Williamson art)
Justice League of America #47 (can't miss the JSA)
Showcase #64 (The Spectre!)
Spirit #1 (Oh Yazz!)
Tales of Suspense #82
Thunder Agents #8 (Woody)
Eight cents left over isn't getting me anywhere with SF or mystery reads. Two Warren mags, Thunder Agents (Woody), and Harvey's Spirit magazine just killed my budget. Add in two DC books (rare for this era) and I had to cut Avengers and Tales to Astonish. I wouldn't have minded a couple of Archies...I have a soft spot for Pureheart, et. al. Luckily no Thor this time around...I don't know what I'd have done there.

The invisible hand of the market dictated lots of army hijinks. Kidding aside, I used to find TONS of Richie Rich and Sad Sack comics at yard/garage sales in the 70s. They were clearly selling well.

There are three Little Dot comics, and that seems reasonable. Especially since you rarely see all three of them in the same month. I’m wondering why the popularity of Richie Rich and Sad Sack seldom crossed over into other media. I think there’s a Sad Sack movie with Jerry Lewis, but I don’t know if it’s related to the comic book. And I guess Richie Rich was on Saturday morning television for a long time. But was there ever a Richie Rich movie?

But was there ever a Richie Rich movie? Sad Sack was a comic strip that started out in Yank, the Army Weekly in 1942. Following the war it was syndicated to newspapers from '46-'58. Creator George Baker sold the character to Harvey comics at some point. The Jerry Lewis film was probably due as much to the character's popularity from World War II as the comic book. There was a Richie Rich movie with Macaulay Culkin, but it was well after the heyday of the comic books. Ultimately, I just think that superhero fans underestimate how very popular Harvey Comics were in the 60s and 70s.

While I was looking up the Jerry Lewis movie, I discovered that there’s a 1928 French movie titled (in English-language releases) The Sad Sack, and it’s directed by Jean Renoir. So I guess the phrase has been around for a long time.
