While I was looking up the Jerry Lewis movie, I discovered that there’s a 1928 French movie titled (in English-language releases) The Sad Sack, and it’s directed by Jean Renoir. So I guess the phrase has been around for a long time. Said phrase in full being "a sad sack of shit," in case you didn't know.
Cei-U! Has never read so much as a panel of Sad Sack!

I feel like Sad Sack was before my time, but I did enjoy Beetle Bailey...were they connected, other than thematically? Also, they Beetle Bailey is associated with Heathcliff in my head, not sure why.

I don't know of a connection between Beetle Bailey and Sad Sack or Heathcliff, but Beetle's sister is Lois Flagston of Hi & Lois. My paper has Hi & Lois but not Beetle, so I can say that the relationship is mentioned occasionally in H&L. I don't know if it's mentioned in Beetle's strip.

Why are there so many Sad Sack comics? All those Richie Rich titles have boggled my mind for decades. But all those Sad Sack comics are even more perplexing, somehow. Sad Sack was one of my favorite funny titles but yeah, enough's enough. There were also a lot of Dennis the Menace books, but then I like Dennis so I'm not complaining. Richie Rich is a bit more baffling to me, though I do remember watching the cartoon back in the day.

In July 1966 I'll spend my $2 on these: Adventure #348 Shooter actually wrote this story (sold this to DC/Weisinger) before his two-parter that appeared in #346-7. Here he takes the heretofore underutilized Invisible Kid--a science nerd like Shooter--and makes him the new team leader. This resulted in IKid getting a lot of screen time in the LSH series over the next couple of years. Unfortunately, IKid's appearances vanished once fan-favorite Ultra Boy took over as leader in 1968's #371 (note: U Boy became leader thanks to the first-ever readers vote for the Legion leader, which became a fan-favorite tradition). DC, 12 cents Avengers #32 Marvel, 12 cents Betty and Veronica #129 Man, I really dig those groovy '60s fashions Archie, 12 cents Doom Patrol #106 DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #55 Marvel, 12 cents Girls' Romances #119 DC, 12 cents Justice League of America #47 JSA, 'nuff said. DC, 12 cents Lois Lane #68 80-page giant!!! DC, 25 cents Marvel Collectors Item Classics #5 One of my favorite back issues, with its FF reprint of Alicia's debut (FF #8). Marvel, 25 cents Secret Hearts #114 Gene Colan cover. DC, 12 cents Teen Titans #5 DC, 12 cents Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker Summer Fun #1 A personal favorite. I was such a fan of the Woody Woodpecker TV cartoon show and my family was on vacation at the Jersey Shore and when I saw this I had to have it (thank you Mom). Forget the beach and the boardwalk and the amusement park, this comic was the highlight of that vacation! I read this to death and carried it with me everywhere during that summer. And I remember being very surprised that Woody had a supporting cast in the comic, young relatives--Splinter and Knothead--because they'd never appeared on the TV show. By the next summer I would be into superheroes but I'll never forget this treasure and what it meant to me. Gold Key, 25 cents Young Love #57 More groovy '60s fashions, yeah baby DC, 12 cents 3 Giants@25 cents each = 75 cents 10 @12 cents each = 1.20 Total: 1.95 With 5 cents I get--egg cream!

Ah, Woody Woodpecker. I remember getting up at 6 AM on Saturday mornings in the late 70's to start my cartoon watching with Woody. And that egg cream looks awesome!

You must be a youngster, then. I have a bunch of Sad Sacks back in the mid-70's or thereabouts. Used to be one of my favorite humor mags.

This was an interesting one, because it made me really think hard about my decisions, and what I'm really into reading.
Nonetheless this is what I'd spend my $2.00 on! 1. X-Men #25 $0.12 2. Daredevil #21 $0.12 3. Detective Comics #356 $0.12 4. Amazing Spider-Man #42 $0.12 5. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 $0.25 6. Action Comics #342 $0.12 7. Green Lantern #48 $0.12 8. More Trash from Mad #9 $.50 9. Mad #106 $.30 10. Superheroes #1 $0.12
Thought it'd be good to mix not only some personal favorite big name comic titles, but an annual for some bang for my buck. As well as some Mad Magazine stuff because who WOULDN'T want that!
Total is $1.89 with a remaining balance: $0.11 to get some CANDY and Soda Pop!

Sorry for the sloppiness. I'd have posted more covers but for the issues I had.

Already? Man, August just flew by! Anyhoo...
Amazing Spider-Man #42 Atom #27 Avengers #33 Daredevil #21 Fantastic Four #56 Green Lantern #48 Hawkman #16 Sgt. Fury #35 Strange Tales #150 Tales of Suspense #83 Tales to Astonish #85 Thor #133 X-Men #25
The above are my usual must-haves. At 12 cents each, my running total is $1.56. This leaves me six cents shy of being able to pick up the Marvel annuals but I have a dime left from last month so I can afford the following after all:
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3 Fantastic Four Annual #4
Still, when I look at all the cool stuff I had to leave on the shelf--Brave and Bold, Detective, Magnus, Popeye-- I must renew my pleas for an increase in my allowance!
Cei-U! Just another dollar, pater, please!?
