I've been listening to a few British thrash albums. Britain isn't known for thrash metal despite the fact that it invented heavy metal. The albums I've listened to sound like Metallica, but that's not a bad thing.

Not a bad thing at all. Got anyone to share?

Also good, but has more of a Slayer feel to it:

Getting close on the Marty Friedman reunion performance with Megadeth, pictures from the soundcheck: blabbermouth.net/news/see-first-photos-of-marty-friedman-with-megadeth-at-soundcheck-for-tokyo-concertI find it a little funny in the one group shot Dave and Marty are standing as far apart as possible...not sure that really was intentional, but still made me smile. I wish when Marty joins for the few songs he's going to play that Kiko would actually step away, I know there's a little "well, don't disrespect the current guy in the band", but you know he'd be cool with it and it just lets the reunion shine more. In Dokken right now, the current lead player is Jon Levin, but the classic player George Lynch has been joining them on the road for a few songs each night, and when he plays Jon steps off. I think it works better that way. I guess though at the end of the day we'll get Marty's solos and that's probably the biggest draw.

Well, uploads of the Megadeth concert with Marty Friedman are up on Youtube. Man, that was cool to watch. This is my "If Lennon and McCartney had reunited" level of cool moment. Marty looked like he was having the time of his life.
The camera pans out at one point to see Dave, Marty and Kiko all playing together, and I thought man, you guys are exceeding your musical talent budget. That much skill should not be allowed in one place at one time.

Metallica dropped the third single from their upcoming 72 Seasons album. The song is "If Darkness Had a Son."
Like the other two singles released for this album, plus the entire previous album, it is... okay to pretty good. As is their MO in the 21st century, it has good elements, but they just struggle to assemble it all together into a great final song. Cool riffs abound. James is always good for that. I like the double tracked verse vocals.
The mix is...fine? It's not annoyingly or distractingly bad, which is worth mentioning with this band's history. The guitars aren't distractingly weak like on Hardwired, but neither are they satisfyingly heavy or crunchy. The drumming is adequate if not exciting. I can hear Rob. Kirk...man, Kirk.
Whether he ran out of juice or can't be bothered, I don't know, but at the end of the day, we have yet another song held back by a sub-par, lazy, generic solo. Just generic pentatonic licks haphazardly stapled together. It's so disappointing because he has proven he is capable of some moving pieces or exciting work. This just feels uninspired and obligatory.
Like with the earlier singles and most of their work the last 20 years, it's decent ideas but not finished. They still have the building blocks, but somewhere along the way they lost either their ability or desire to properly bake it into a good song.
Oh, well. Nobody thought they were going to put out the best work of their careers after year 40.

impulse - I couldn't add a single thing to your Metallica review, 100% right on the money from my listen as well. Back on the Megadeth reunion...I saw Marty with a Jackson Kelly, that really brings back the nostalgia for me Seems like a reunion well done, everyone was cool with each other, Marty tore it up, how great was that?

As we continue down the long and winding road of all things metal, curious to hear thoughts on alternative metal.
Pretty broad label, but I'll start with an old Deftones favorite:

Back on the Megadeth reunion...I saw Marty with a Jackson Kelly, that really brings back the nostalgia for me Seems like a reunion well done, everyone was cool with each other, Marty tore it up, how great was that? I also saw the Jackson! He was wearing a red and black flannel vest, too. It was big nostalgia. They seemed like they had fun, and I hope this opens the door to more team-ups. I don't expect there would ever be a full-on permanent reunion, but more shows would be fun. At least, I hope they don't reunite permanently. I don't know how I would justify the expense of the tickets to my wife, because that's a "name your price" ticket. Back to the Metallica song... I played around with the tempo, because it was oddly middling. I've seen comments saying it should be faster, but I thought the opposite...slowed it down to 85% speed and WOW. Missed opportunity. This could have been a slow, heavy banger like The Thing That Should Not Be or Sad But True if it was a smidge slower had had a better guitar tone. 21st century Metallica is becoming synonymous with "wasted potential" and "missed opportunity" for me.

Pretty broad label, but I'll start with an old Deftones favorite: I've ruffled some feathers with this before, but I'll repeat it now. "Alternative metal" is so broad as to basically being a meaningless catch-all genre. With that level of variety, there is plenty that I like and plenty that I don't. Some nu-metal I think would fit comfortably under this sub genre. I enjoyed System of a Down a lot in the 2000s. Deftones never did much for me, but that's mostly a me thing.

Yes!! I was thinking of those same songs, and how it seemed to be "kind of" heading in that direction but just not hitting the same mark. I'm going to have to try that same speed experiment, thanks for the idea!

Agreed on some nu-metal fitting in there. For me it's a little that very aspect of what always appealed to me about the "alt" concept...it's stuff that doesn't always fit neatly into established genres, but sort of fits the 90's mood (the 80's party was over!) and surge of experimentation with metal tones. Right off the top of my head I would at least loosely (if not more directly with several) apply to RATM, Korn, Tool, Deftones, Incubus, Chevelle, Godsmack, Disturbed, Slipknot, Stone Sour...but SO many more obviously.
