Today marks 35 years since the movie K-9 was released, starring Jim Belushi as a detective who teams up with an Alsatian to stop a major criminal. This July will also mark 35 years since Turner and Hooch was released, starring Tom Hanks as a detective teamed with Hooch, which I think was a French Mastiff, but I can’t claim to always get breeds right.
So, dogs (which are awesome) have featured as sidekicks and heroes in their own right. Krypto and Ace the Bat-Hound are two good examples.
Who else should have had a dog? You don’t have to be entirely serious with any answers you give, but serious or humorous, feel free to elaborate on your choices. Naturally, some characters would not have had the time or aptitude for dogs, but this is what hypothetical topics are for.
And feel free to share any thoughts on the likes of Krypto.
Personally, Spider-Man or Captain America having a dog would have been fun.
Incidentally, has Judge Dredd’s world ever featured a dog unit? I guess Mega-City One’s judges are more about using technology to stop criminals, but I don’t recall ever seeing a police dog in that world.

I like the idea of Iron Man outfitting a chihuahua with a tiny Iron Dog suit.
Cei-U! I summon the tiny terror!

Frank Castle could bond with a massive Cane Corso with anger management issues (in the movies, they eat the bad guy, like in Columbiana....or are used as intimidating guard dogs like in The Black Phone).
Conversely, Kingpin could also have a pair of them...

There were robodogs in Judge Dredd and I'm sure I recall Dredd being attacked by a pack at some point. I don't think I've ever seen Judges using dogs or robodogs to aid in the apprehension of perps. I'm pretty sure there were robot dogs in Robo-Hunter too, which is, as I'm sure you know, set in the same world as Judge Dredd.

It could be argued that 'Mazing Man had a dog as a sidekick.

I love dogs, and have always enjoyed the likes of Krypto and Ace.
I'm going to throw out a crazy one...if the Hulk had a "gamma hound" as a companion. Ok, it might seem a little silly, this green gamma ray infused Hulk pup. But besides the spectacle of it, Hulk always feels so lonely and outcast, and what better companion than man's best friend but in an incarnation that can hang with him.

Rex and Lassie say "Bark, bark, bark...bark bark bark...bark bark*" (roughly translated: Sidekicks? Bah, we're the heroes in our own right. We don't need no stinking dog side kicks!" but one type of character who should not have a dog sidekick, or at least not take them on ride alongs, are fighter bi-plane pilots...(alas poor Shatzi!) at least it wasn't this pilot who shot him down... but a resounding huzzah for Ace and Krypto! -M

While Timber is technically a wolf, if I can stretch slightly and include him with Snake Eyes I would call him another favorite. While Snake Eyes is not an outcast like the Hulk from my earlier example, his non-verbal nature makes socialization a little different and somehow I like the idea of Timber being his companion as dogs (or wolf in this case) can form bonds well beyond the verbal cues they might receive.
Plus they are a great action team!

I had the Snake-Eyes/Timber figures!
Incidentally, trying to equate fictional dogs with real breeds might be a fool’s errand, but as a fool, I’ll go down that path. Is Krypto meant to be a Labrador (or akin to a Labrador)? He’s not 100% like one.
And is Ace the Bat-Hound an Alsatian?

Krypto is the Kryptonian equivalent of a terrier (he was actually designed without a specific breed in mind). Ace is a German shepherd.

Since we seem to just be naming our favourite canine characters and sidekicks now too, I'm just gonna leave this here...

Quality Comics Manhunter (Dan Richards) had a dog, named Thor..... Even cooler, though, was Quality's Doll Man, whose dog, Emo the Wonder Dog, was not only a sidekick, he was transport!

Normal dog until Bruce gets upset, then the dog gets upset also, and both change simultaneously. How about The Question? He could have a dog named "?". Then when people ask how to say the dog's name, he'd say, "Good question."
