A sister discussion to the They did WHAT with my character/property??!! thread, what are some examples of characters or franchises that a later writer changed for the better? And, when the X-Men inevitably come up, who will you credit? Len Wein, Chris Claremont, John Byrne, etc?

Frank Miller's Daredevil from #158 up...awesome...saved it from cancellation when he took over as writer as well, if those rumours were true.
And, imho, Garth Ennis's Punisher inclusive of 2000's Welcome Back Frank, followed by a 37 issue series, followed by the awesome Punisher Max.

I thought Marc DeMatteis and Mark Badger did a helluva job of updating Martian Manhunter for a modern audience.

Adam Warlock becomes a major player when Jim Starlin redefines him in Strange Tales # 178.

Jim Starlin on Captain Marvel. His best IMO. I loved old green suit Mar-Vel but when Starlin stepped in, that whole storyline and then his eventual death were done so well. Makes Mar-Vel my favourite character, behind only Spidey and Batman

For a more modern example, I love Peter David making Multiple Man a private eye.

Does Peter David's Incredible Hulk run count? It was a (mostly) great run, but what was so groundbreaking and new about it? Just in the first handful of Hulk stories by Stan Lee, we had the angry gray hulk, we had Banner's mind in Hulk's body and the more child-like Hulk.

I've always liked the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider over Johnny Blaze.

The recasting of the grim gritty parody (of Frank Miller) kung fu comic called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a kid-friendly cartoon and Archie comic that became a pop culture juggernaut that is still going...

I'd say intelligent Green Hulk, leading his own think tank/crisis action agency (The Pantheon) was pretty different.

Casting Robert Downey as Tony Stark and adapting Tales of Suspense #39 in the first Iron Man film was a masterstroke IMO.
