This is one of my favourite aspects of older books - panel covers, put to best use with humour mags like Archie.  What are some of the best panel-covers from the Big 2? When did they die out? And why? |

Agreed, the one that comes to mind from Marvel in the Bronze-Age is Avengers #197

I'm only guessing but as far as action/adventure comics goes, an editor would believe a single drawing would be more instantly captivating on the newstand instead of a multi-panel that you need to stare at awhile to understand it. With crowded comic racks every split-second counts. I did enjoy them when they were more numerous  |

It seems to be connected to the current trend of making the covers as generic and disconnected from the story inside as possible. That's my impression of what I see from Marvel and DC, at least

The one that comes to my mind is Amazing Spider-Man #4, with the Sandman. Love that one, and my copy comes with a bit of an enigma to it. The guy I got it from said someone scribbled '6 B' on a piece of the cover but the more I looked at it, I wondered...why would anyone scribble that on a comic? Then it occured to me it might really be '6 13' or 13th of June as in distribution date. Suddenly it didn't seem like a big flaw anymore, as distribution dates were common back then. This was done with a grease pencil. I still got a great deal on it ($250) and it's my earliest copy in the series... |

Let's not forget Tales of Suspense #34 ...
From October 1962, the same publication date for Fantastic Four #7, Journey into Mystery #85 (first Loki), Tales to Astonish #36 (third Hank Pym), Strange Tales #101 (first Human Torch solo), Boris Karloff Thriller #1, Green Lantern #16 (first Star Sapphire) and Superman #156 with "The Last Days of Superman."

Archie definitely lead the pack amongst publishers using those panel covers I think well into the 70s
Atlas/Marvel was probably second
I can't think of any other publisher that used them as much as those 2

I think it's more appealing to have one large drawing sell the story rather than several smaller ones. This is particularly true on older comics, where the cover often conveyed the most exciting scene in the book in a big huge dramatic splash page with airbrushed colors, rather than as a single panel covered in dialog and compositionally limited by being one part of a larger page.
In the modern day most coveres are only ever covers once. Only one out of six covers get to adorn the front of the trade paperback and remain a cover, the rest are demoted from promotional art to chapter divider. Some books even stuff all the covers at the back and try to present the material as one seamless narrative.

The French went pretty crazy with it for a while in Tintin magazine. Those covers remind me that in the Golden Age some cheapskate publishers just used an inside page as a cover instead of commissioning new artwork.Not saying these are examples of it but it happened |

I think part of it to is to let the artist draw a full page pic, which doesn't happen within the comic that often. I don't love the panel ones, to be honest, I like a splash page on the cover.... I do greatly prefer it to have something to do with the story, though.
