Hi,
Well, throwing this one out there. What do you think were terrible, atrocious concepts for comic book characters. A couple come to mind immediately: 1) Nomad with the baby(named Bucky, of course). What the hell were the people at Marvel smoking in the early 90's?? What an absolutely stupid idea. Oh yeah, a guy fights bad guys with a baby strapped to his back. The pussification of a character that may have had potential at one time. Whenever I think of Nomad, such as when he appeared in the movie, I think of a less than masculine character...neutered...in some ways. 2) Rick Jones and the Teen Brigade. First off, Rick Jones was/is and absolutely useless character. The sidekick who whores himself out...the groupie of the rocks stars of the Marvel universe. Rick is like the guy in the band that plays the bongos or pretends to actually be doing something, when all he really does is just be there doing nothing. And then to make up this absolutely idiotic Teen Brigade...and this was before The Goonies, so I ask again what the hell Marvel was smoking to come up with this ridiculous idea. Any other ideas that you simply find foolish or flat out stupid?

This is going to be a LOOOOONG group of subjects for discussion. So many gahdawful ideas that have been corporately approved over the years. How about Mephisto taking Spidey's marriage/wife/child away? Sell your soul to the Devil, just another great idea from the magnificent minds at Marvel. Mind you that only works if you are Danny Blaze the Ghost Rider and spit in the face of the deal Wanda/Pietro: the truly unwanted kids of the Marvel Universe. Nobody really wants to claim them so their parentage changes every few years?!? Talk about mom and dad moving across the street and leaving the kids behind! Unworthy Thor: unworthy because of a lie so he believes himself unworthy so the mystical Mjolnir can't tell the difference after all these centuries of his wielding it? The inscription doesn't say a thing about he/she who BELIEVES is worthy. Damn near anybody would be walking around with their own transforming cane into hammer then. More to come for sure...

A telephone poll (pardon that unintentional pun) to determine (suppposedly) whether Robin dies, or more specifically, whether he is murdered. An excruciating story, an execrable sequence. Characterization by committee. The tyranny and the cruelty of the majority. Welcome to the Colosseum. We who are about to be beaten to death with a crowbar for your sadistic amusement salute you!

Oh yeah, a guy fights bad guys with a baby strapped to his back. It worked in Lone Wolf and Cub manga and film series. I haven't read the Marvel story but it may be a nod to those.

Yeah, I think Nomad was supposed to be a take on Lone Wolf and Cub. It wasn't very good, though, at least not for me. The Black Bomber was a truly terrible idea for a character, so it's lucky DC decided to quash it before it was published. www.proudrobot.com/hembeck/blacklightning.html

Any other ideas that you simply find foolish or flat out stupid? It's a riff off the classic Lone Wolf and Cub manga, one of the most highly regarded comics internationally. A bad riff of it, but the concept isn't terrible, just poorly executed in the case of the Nomad comics. -M edit: Looks like others beat me to the punch PPS I have to wonder masterofquackfu what do you actually like about comics? Every thread I see you start is about what you hate in comics and makes you angry, agitated, etc. If you dislike what comics do so much, why do you keep partaking in them? Find what you like/love and celebrate that man.

Jack Kirby's The Black Racer as the angel of death flying around on skis (with poles too)... Goodness gracious, I can't decide if it's the worst idea ever or the zaniest, craziest and coolest concept ever to grace a four-colour page. Timothy Leary would have loved him.
An alternate Johnny Storm as a spacefaring ice hockey goalkeeper named Gaard was also pretty... well, hokey.
The Elder of the Universe named Runner was... bizarre. He was introduced when the idea of the Elders as people obsessed by one particular activity (collecting, fighting, gambling and so on) was catching on, and apparently someone at Marvel was a big jogging fan... because we suddenly had a shiny golden dude crossing the universe... jogging. In the hands of Steve Gerber it would have been a brilliant satire, but the Defenders issue where he was first seen played him very seriously.

Mind you that only works if you are Danny Blaze the Ghost Rider and spit in the face of the deal That's one of the all time worst for me as well. It felt completely out of character to me even though arguably Peter at times is very guilt driven. (It's his original schtick after all.) If Marvel had any balls Spidey would have been married with a kid for the last twenty years. Renew Your Vows has been an interesting read though. What I'm more interested in is why Mephisto is so interested in May or Annie May as she's now called in RYV to begin with. There may be an interesting story there but I don't think OMD at this point was worth it.

I could see maybe they were trying to modernize and/or Americanize it, but yeah, big time fail.

[Broken Record mode on]
Just for the record, because it's not already in 37,429 threads already, but making Tony Stark a Kang sleeper agent, then pulling a young 'innocent' version of him out of the time stream to take over is #1 on my list, and has been since the story dropped.

People have brought up Lone Wolf & Cub; but, Nomad wasn't the only to ape that. Max Allan Collins' Road to Perdition pretty much borrows the premise wholesale and then sets it into the Depression era gangland. That one actually works. Wasn't hot on the writing of Nomad; but, Clarke Hawbaker's art was great, while it lasted. Got to meet him once; really nice, cool guy.
You could do a whole doctoral thesis on bad ideas in comics. I'd put near the top of my list the trend to turning bright, optimistic characters into morose, angst-ridden jerks. For me, one of the worst was that Adam Strange mini, drawn by Adam Kubert. It was just wrong. The hook to Adam Strange is that he is the smartest guy on another planet and he uses his brains to solve problems, while doing a bit of spacefaring swashbuckling. It doesn't work dark. Thank Kirby that someone like James Robinson showed the way, in the To The Stars storyline of Starman, and let Adam return to being the hero he always was, even on Earth. He even made a bit of a meta-commentary about the whole mess.
Another right up at the top would be the whole Carol Danvers pregnancy, from Avengers. That was wrong in so many ways that it would take too long to list.
