IIRC, the interior artwork to this issue was disappointing with a mis-matched pairing of Bob Brown's pencils with Vince Coletta's inks, but I've always liked this cover. At first I thought I was going to go with something from the Ring of the Nibelung miniseries Kane did with Roy Thomas in the early 80s, I think it was,, but when I looked at the covers they weren,t as good as I remember the interior art being.

Hey, what kind of Commie nonsense is this? Too many dang hippies at Marvel, then....

I was thinking of writing exactly the same thing. Cockrum did pencil the old X-Men here--the guys in the background, the ones being put out to pasture replaced--as well as ink the whole thing. Kane penciled the new team bursting forth. Great covers everyone! Love the variety EDIT: confirmed this with the GCD entry, fwiw Here's actually a file copy of Kane's layouts for that part of the cover.... -M

Dagnabbit. I really wanted to get into the first 2 pages, so I could maybe get a vote this week. But there were just too many covers to choose from.

The only real challenge in finding a Gil Kane cover with a PUNCH was picking a good one that hadn't been used yet!

One of my favorite comics in my collection. I was never a big fan of Gil Kane's interiors but always thought he was a great cover artist.

I've never knew that Gil Kane did Rex, The Wonder Dog at all. Interesting.

I've never knew that Gil Kane did Rex, The Wonder Dog at all. Interesting. All but the first issue of its 45-issue run. (That was by Alex Toth.) As great a collection of eclectic covers as you're going to find in one title. Kane did something from virtually every genre on Rex: Western; war; mystery; animal; science-fiction; dinosaurs; you name it, Kane drew it for Rex.

A sentimental favorite. The first copy of Rip Hunter I ever saw on the stands, the only one with a Gil Kane cover, is the last one published. I'm guessing they thought that a Kane cover might juice up sales, but it was too late. Kashdan should have tried to grab Gil for his covers years before. I also wanted to find Kane inking his own pencils. The impact of so many of his DC covers was lessened by the inks of Joe Giella, DC's answer to Vince Colletta. And we find out that Rip Hunter's a lefty!

I was really tempted to use the cover where Rex battles an octopus underwater. But for the most part, they're all top-notch Kane.
