Great write up on Alan Scott @mechagodzilla . The Golden Age Green Lantern is my favorite JSA hero. He must have been color blind with his costume color choices! Although I did like his GA costume I liked his updated costume as Sentinel. I know Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman are considered DC's Trinity but for me the JSA trinity is Flash (Jay), Green Lantern (Alan) & Hawkman (Carter). Your thoughts on the JSA Trinity is pretty interesting ... I go 50/50 on Hawkman and Doctor (Nelson) Fate for the 3rd member of this trinity. Both are noteworthy candidates. For the record -- I'm moving on to Abin Sur next. I'll start that on Wednesday.

Number Two - Abin Sur He was recruited by Starkaor of whom that I know very little about. I was told that by a dear friend of mine that goes to the same LCS that I do. He was modeled after Yul Brynner and another friend at my LCS told me so. While on patrol, he is attacked and pursued by the being known as Legion while on its way to Oa. His own ship was hit by yellow sun radiation. Badly injured and with his spaceship seriously damaged, he makes an emergency landing on the nearest habitable planet (Earth). Due to his injuries, Sur was aware that his death was inevitable and he uses his ring to search for a successor, a man without fear. The first possibility was Clark Kent. Since he was not native to Earth, he is not chosen. The next candidates were Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. As Jordan was closer, the ring chose him as the most suitable replacement right before Sur's death, and brings him to Sur, who gives him the ring. Pre-Crisis Hal first tested his ring by lifting a mountain, then hid the ship and Sur's remains under it, as Sur had told him to dispose of them. Later it is shown these were the Sierra Madre mountains. Jordan had made sure to bury Sur in nearly inaccessible area and leave a small stone marker. He appeared briefly in Showcase #22 ... that's contains Hal Jordan's origin here. Hal Jordan, the Silver Age Green Lantern, makes his debut in three stories by John Broome, Gil Kane and Joe Giella in Showcase 22 (Sept/Oct 59). Each of the stories is, obviously, quite short, but each one introduces an element of the overall series. In the first story Abin Sur crashes his ship on Earth, and as he is dying commands his ring to bring him a fearless man. Test pilot Hal Jordan, who works for Ferris Aircraft, is one the selected, and brought to the dying alien. Abin Sur hands over his ring and his lantern power battery, but mentions nothing at all about the Guardians of the Universe, or the Green Lantern Corps. It would also be a bit of a puzzle as to why he was even flying a ship, rather than using the ring, but a couple of explanations for that would be printed over the years. Hal buries Abin Sur, and actually takes Abin's uniform, rather than creating one with the ring. Hal also chooses to name himself after the power lantern, rather than knowing the name of the organization he has just been recruited into. Needless to say, these odd elements to the story would be altered in later tellings. This is all that I have for Abin Sur, and that's why -- I did not want to elaborate on him because he's an important part of Hal's legacy and I consider him to be a noteworthy Green Lantern that started the Green Lantern Corps because of all the Green Lanterns that I've been commenting on. I'll share more about Showcase #22 in coming days ahead and start exploring more about Hal Jordan -- of whom that I feel is the Greatest Green Lantern of them all. Hal is next on the list and I'm planning on spending more time with him. Hal Jordan is Next!

Number One Green Lantern -- Hal Jordan He got his debut in Showcase #22 of which I have a copy of that book that came out in September/October 1959 of which I've cherish that book more than anything else in the world. I actually have two copies -- one at home and other one in the safety deposit box at my bank. I read that story about 3-4 times a year for kicks. Here's the first adventure of Hal Jordan -- that sums up the remaining stories of Showcase #22. The second story has Hal deal with some saboteurs attacking Ferris Aircraft. Notes: One of the first powers that I've noticed -- is Hal is using his ring to travel through walls without destroying it and that's the first thing that I saw seeing this splash page back then and that's when -- I thought he was the coolest superhero ever. But it is far more important for introducing the woman in his life, Carol Ferris, the daughter of the head of the company. Though Carol and Hal clearly have something for each other, Carol holds status over him, which adds an unusual element to their relationship for 1959. I had a huge crush on Carol Ferris and I just clamoring how gorgeous she really is and she reminded me of several starlets that I can rip off a half-dozen or more. First one that comes to my mind is Hedy Lamarr -- she does looks a bit like her and that's would be my first choice to play her. Hal charges his ring and recites his oath for the first time. This oath was actually used for the last couple of years in the original Green Lantern's series Taking out the saboteurs is nothing for Green Lantern and his ring, although he forgets about the weakness to yellow at first. As the story comes to an end, Carol's father, here called Willard, though usually named Carl, decides to go on a two year vacation, leaving Carol in charge of the company. She is now Hal's boss, and in this position feels that any personal relationship between them would be detrimental to her position. And in 1959, she's probably right. But Hal is not happy about things. The cover story gives Hal a different way to get to Carol. There is a big dance planned, and Green Lantern has been invited. Carol expresses her interest in the new hero to Hal. Their first kiss. So Hal shows up at the dance and begins to romance Carol. Things move pretty darn quickly, and they kiss before the night is out. But as they are kissing, Green Lantern sees a big yellow missile heading for a government plan working on hydrogen power. Hal has a hard time stopping the missile, but less difficulty tracking down the evil agents who fired it. Carol is one tough cookie! The real kicker comes at the end, when Carol turns out to be furious with him for flying off to stop it. She insists that he ought to have had his eyes closed, and then slams the door in his face. In one issue, Hal strikes out with Carol Ferris both as himself and as Green Lantern. Superman never had these troubles. More coming in a day or two -- and I'll be spending a lot of time on Hal Jordan, Green Lantern!

Green Lantern Filmation Cartoons -- 1967IntroductionGreen Lantern battles Evil Star #1This one is my personal favorite and the best of three adventures. Green Lantern in Vanishing World #2This adventure -- I just had a hard time enjoying it today and felt it was the weakest of the three cartoons. Green Lantern verses Sirena, Empress of Evil #3This last adventure is an worthy one; but lacks the action of the first one and it's has its moments. I have all these cartoons on this DVD and I usually watch these about 2-3 times a year and I can go through all of them in a single afternoon of good cartoon fun! Starring DC Comics favorites the Atom, the Flash, Green Lantern and Hawkman, these action-packed Filmation Associates-produced adventures pit our heroes against alien invaders and fantastical creatures from strange worlds, all intent on taking over planet Earth. This exciting two-disc compilation features each superheroes in three cartoons plus Bonus Cartoons starring the Justice League of America (the Atom, the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Superman) and the Teen Titans (Speedy, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl and Aqualad) for a Total 18 Classic Cartoons of good versus evil. Your collection won’t be complete without this 2-Disc Compilation of works from this accomplished independent studio and the legendary heroes who saved humankind each and every time danger called!

Mecha, I know you highly regard Grant Morrison's run on Justice League and wonder what you think of him taking over the new Hal Jordan GL comic ?

Mecha, I know you highly regard Grant Morrison's run on Justice League and wonder what you think of him taking over the new Hal Jordan GL comic ? I think he'll do a fine job and knowing him in the past -- I highly regard his creativity in the Justice League and I was hoping that he'll change Hal into a more pleasant and engaging male with a touch of realism and style that missing in the good ole days. I think he'll do well and hoping for the best.
