I still find it interesting that even though "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" is considered the final story of the Pre-crisis Superman, it actually references events from "Crisis on Infinite Earths", like Supergirl's death, making this actually a Post-Crisis story. Once we get into the actual Post-Crisis era of course the Crisis would continue to get referenced. There are of course series where the Crisis is a major factor such as Wally West's Flash series which would often reference Barry's death, but even the Post-Crisis Superman would make comments about his own participation in these events. That would mean that the earlier Post-Crisis Superman adventures such as "The Man of Steel" mini-series actually take place before Crisis. So we've got a Post-Crisis story of the Pre-Crisis Superman, and Pre-Crisis stories of the Post-Crisis Superman! Does that mean there was a Post-Crisis Crisis on Infinite Earth's which featured Post-Crisis Superman and differed from the actual published stories? Maybe DC is saving this for their 100th anniversary big-event!I think the post-crisis universe was in some kind of flux, like the surface of a lake right after a storm, with causality being up in the air to some extent. The timeline was later streamlined with the Zero Hour event (after DC realized it had painted itself in Infinite Corners!) It all made for fun reading anyway, so I don't really mind.

I agree. The first time I followed Post-Crisis Superman was in the 90s, during the Death/Return storyline. At the time I didn't realize there'd even been a reboot since, even with the updates, it seemed familiar enough to the stories and characters I'd read from late 70s and early 80s. I eventually found out that this was a new continuity but it wouldn't be until years later that I'd learn about Crisis on Infinite Earths. As long as the stories were enjoyable and the characters close enough to the way I expected them, it didn't bother me

A Byrne Superman story(part of the 'Time Trapper/Pocket Universe' arc) acknowledged some sort of 'flux' that caused delays in the full effect of CRISIS. So, for about 6 months after CRISIS ended, everything was set on some 'post-CRISIS version of Earth-1', where many of the deceased and 'erased' characters were still remembered. As soon as MAN OF STEEL # 1(and BATMAN # 401) came out, followed very soon after by the LEGENDS mini-series, the last traces of 'pre-CRISIS' disappeared. The, uh, 'post-CRISIS version of the 'Crisis on One Earth' was basically something that was mentioned in passing, without getting into specifics like 'Supergirl and Wonder Woman died' or 'Earth-2 Superman destroyed the Anti-Monitor'.
